Virginia´s background as geomorphologist makes her much fascinated in understanding how the natural world functions. She is interested in the physical processes that shape the Earth’s surface and interplay with humans; but as fluvial geomorphologist, her research has targeted the study of processes that control the form, structure and function of rivers and their catchments. She has been extensively working on fluvial processes and related hazards in river basins, including the analysis and reconstruction of extreme floods and the dynamics of instream wood. Her work aims at developing new methods for monitoring and modelling and at refining theories about how fluvial processes interact with biotic processes to create habitat, helping design effective management strategies and informing sustainable environmental policies. ARTUR FURDYNA - CCB/FRIENDS OF THE RIVERS OF INA AND GOWIENICA ASSOCIATION MSc in marine fisheries engineering, specialization in ichthyology, water ecology. After a decade of professional fishing he returned to the scientific and practical side of water wildlife protection, cooperating with West Pomeranian universities and the Society of Hydrobiologists. For twenty years he has been dealing with the protection and restoration of river ecosystems in West Pomerania. Involved in the implementation of pro-environmental projects in cooperation with regional environmental protection institutions, scientists and NGOs, including CCB. NIVERSITY ER U BER 2020 RIV 20 - 24 OCTO Speakers HERMAN WANNINGEN - WORLD FISH MIGRATION FOUNDATION & DAM REMOVAL EUROPE Dams are a huge threat to biodiversity -- a literal barrier to fish migration- - and yet there are thousands of old and obsolete dams still standing. Herman founded the World Fish Migration Foundation and the Dam Removal Europe movement to remove dams and protect fish populations in free-flowing rivers worldwide. They identify obsolete dams, advocate for removal and catalyze funding to get it going, and then publicize the results to generate momentum. Herman is an aquatic ecologist and entrepreneur with 20 years of experience in fish migration and water management. Herman is recognized for starting “World Fish Migration Day”, co-authoring 3 books, organizing international conferences and developing action networks.
