The exhibit also hosts halls filled with authentic Appalachian artifacts, gardens, and farm animals in a picturesque setting surrounded by split-rail fences. This extensive and fascinating Museum tells the stories of the Appalachian people in their own words and through the artifacts they left behind. It’s a valuable resource for teaching regional history and culture. The Mark Twain Family Cabin was the Tennessee home of the famous American author’s family; they moved to Missouri some five months before his birth. Structures include log cabins, a rare cantilevered barn, one-room schoolhouse, log church, and old-time sawmill. The Hall of Fame houses numerous exhibits including an extensive collection of old- time musical instruments, perpetual motion machine, and a machine gun captured by World War I hero Sergeant Alvin York. Musicians play old-time tunes “on the porch” for visitors. Program info: Student groups receive an interactive musical program and orientation. Children learn about life in historic Appalachia, and have the opportunity to sing and play simple musical instruments including the spoons, washboards, washtub bass, and saws. A self-guided Museum tour follows. Cost: $6.00 per student Hours: Seasonal; call for days and hours of operation Lunch: Groups may bring picnic lunches to eat on the grounds Shopping: American-made regional crafts available in the gift shop at the Museum Chaperones: Free admission for teachers Teaching resources, developed according to state curriculum guidelines, are available on the Museum website, www.museumofappalachia.org. For Title I schools, the Museum offers a donor-funded assistance program, “Everybody Tours,” providing half off student admission rates. Carr, died this week. The 66 year old Silver Point native became Register of Deeds here as a young man in the late 1800’s and served in that job for 14 years. He was Putnam’s state representative from 1919•21. Then he worked for the State Board of equalization for three years and as a clerk for various other state departments until 1928. Martin, Jr. Spring 2010 1 Abstract The Relationship of Newspaper Articles to Modern Culture by Aurelio José Pérez Doctor of Philosophy in English University of California, Berkeley Professor Abdul JanMohamed, Chair In this dissertation, I examine legal definitions of race within the United States and the representation and reformulation of these categories within U.S. literature. The substrate of this dissertation is a collection of American literary and legal texts from the 17th through the 20th centuries. I examine how these texts chronicle, represent, and often intentionally misrepresent individuals’ attempts to subvert and even openly challenge delimited identifications such as ‘immigrant’ or ‘slave.’ Often these challenges are leveled against the normative identificatory organ of ‘Law,’ that is, the judicial processes and legal decisions that establish and confirm these reductive identifications. The mode of the challenges I examine is movement, or literal mobility. When normative pathways of identification begin to fail, mobility gains importance as a means of transgressing, figuratively and literally, usually impermeable classificatory boundaries.

During the late 1960sthe council underwent radical transformation. Federal relationscooled and money dried up.
