EXETER LIVESTOCK CENTRE MARKET REPORT January 2017 Friday 20th Store Stock Market EXETER LIVESTOCK CENTRE Matford Park Road, Exeter, Devon, EX2 8FD 01392 251261 [email protected] www.kivells.com 324 STORE CATTLE, STIRKS & BREEDING CATTLE – 10AM Auctioneers: Simon Alford 07789 980203 Alan Webber 07967 718048 Steers to £1325 Heifers to £960 No let-up in the fierce store cattle trade with all types, breed and ages looking as dear as ever. Best sorts rose to an impressive high of £1325 for a pair of striking well farmed South Devon steers (28m) from Paul Caunter up from Kingsbridge, others with similar comments from Paul ran to £1125. David Drew of Lapford sent his usual strong, forward types and was well rewarded as his pen of three Charolais bullocks (25m) easily reached the £1200 mark. Close behind were a couple of grand Blue steers (21m) from David & Wendy Holland of Dolton which looked dear at £1195, whilst steers of the same age and off the same farm also sold well, with other Blue’s realizing £1160, Limousins £1160 and Charolais £1155. Fred & Jennifer Trott, Thorverton always bring an excellent selection of strong sorts and didn’t disappoint with steers all around the 20m mark rising to £1180 for a pair of rangy Charolais’. Whilst the same could also be said of Michael Tooze of Paignton who also sent a lorry load of cracking store steers and saw a group of four tremendous Simmentals (27- 28m) to £1175 as daughter Gemma also chipped in with her pair of Devon cross steers (27m) getting £1060 a head. John Simmons, Poltimore sold a Charolais steer (at just 19m) for £1150 but it was his Friesian bullocks which really caught the eye with an OTM steer selling for £1095 and a smart trio all around the two year mark selling for £970 apiece. Best younger steers (16m) saw £920 for Martin Reed of Kings Nympton with shapely Blondes. With no really handy aged, forward meat types on offer, heifers still topped £960 for an imposing, aged South Devon from Paul Wakeham of Uphempston whilst David Withers of Whimple saw £890 for a two year old Simmental and others of that breed (28m) got £875 for John & Helen Keep of Moretonhampstead. Decent Blonde females (20m) saw £800 for WS Coleman of Lapford. A small entry for the monthly Beef Breeding sale with in-calf South Devon Cows to £960 for Darren & Dee-Dee Sibley of Poundsgate, also a super 2014 born pedigree Charolais bull ‘Alren Jake’ made an impressive £1680 for TN Lightfoot of Callington. 200 SUCKLED CALVES & STIRKS – 11.30AM Auctioneers: Simon Alford 07789 980203 & Ian Caunter 07813 068935 A fantastic entry for our Inaugural Special January sale of Suckled Calves met a blistering trade for the many top quality consignments of calves on offer. Best steer stirks sold to a notable high of £950 for an exceptional South Devon steer (10m) from Alan & Liz Bartley of Cullompton followed by their trio of strong steers (9m) at £880 apiece. A further big run of quality sorts from Trevor & Martine Snell of Tipton St John attracted plenty of interest with several previous purchasers vying for their calves, a bunch of cracking Charolais steers (10m) looked dear at £910 whilst Simmentals of a similar age rose to £810 and a mixed bunch of four heifers fetched £650 apiece. Angus steers (10m) with named sires saw £800 for Andrew Cleave of Moretonhampstead followed by his pen of five neat Limousin steer calves (6m) which realised £750 a head. Well reared and turned out Charolais’ from Kevin Dinnis, Tedburn sold well and to £765 for steers (7m) and £675 for heifers with the same comments whilst Merv Hutchings of St Stephens saw £735 for bunch of four growthy Simmental steers (8m) as did Roger Bellamy of Peter Tavy with a pen of shapely Blue steers (9m). Devon steers (10m) from J Herdman, Tedburn ran to £665 with other native bred sorts to £680 for Louise Jewell of Bridestowe with her best pen of Hereford steers (8m). Stirk heifers sold to a top of £680 firstly for a pair of nicely muscled Blues (9m) from Roger Bellamy, a price matched by Robert & Janet Phipps of Exbourne with a smart Simmental heifer (10m). Courtney & Phillip Heard, Okehampton saw a pen of five tidy Charolais heifer calves (8m) reach £640 apiece. 58 CALVES – 10.15AM Auctioneers: Mark Davis 07773 371774 & Ian Caunter 07813 068935 A much smaller entry forward this week but what CALVES - 10.15 am we lacked in quantity we made up for on quality with a super show of calves which vendors must be CALVES Bulls Heifers congratulated for in this time of year. Top of the day Breed TOP AVE TOP AVE was £422 for a tremendous three week old British Blue Charolais bull from Charles Mudge of Tavistock 12 365 280 4 245 192 who sold another at £405. Other Charolais bulls to Limousin 6 325 271 6 240 180 £320 for Michael Pyle of Broadhembury. Mr PC Charolais 4 422 356 2 282 258 Clarke sold two super young British Blue bulls at Simmental 2 280 255 £365 & £340. Other Blues to £345 for Keith & Jane Hulbert of Honiton. Smart young Limousin bulls Hereford 4 235 215 2 185 170 sold to £325 & £305 for Alf Harris & Son of Aberdeen Angus 2 255 232 1 120 120 Tiverton. Simmental bulls to £285 for Messrs C & Holstein / Friesian 7 85 54 EC Mills of Sampford Perverell. Aberdeen Angus bulls to £255 for Keith & Jane Hulbert of Honiton. Heifers topped at £282 for a Charolais heifer from Michael Pyle. British Blue heifers to £245 for Russell Ashford of Buckfastleigh. Limousin heifers to £240 for Alf Harris & Son. Only a handful of Friesians with the best to £85 for C Dunn of Drewsteignton. 2246 SHEEP - 11AM Auctioneer: Russell Steer 07788 318701 21 ORPHAN LAMBS Orphans sold to a top of £22 for three pure Dorset lambs from Graham Hill of Sidmouth and also £22 for a nice Continental cross lamb from Tracey Pike of Luppitt. Other young lambs from Kevin Dennis of Tedburn St Mary and Stuart Williams of Sidmouth to £20, Arnold & Alison Dare of Kilmington achieved £17 and Richard Smaridge of East Allington sold four at £16. Smaller lambs out in number and harder to re-home whilst the overall average is back roughly a pound to £14.15. 2006 STORE HOGGS A much larger entry of 2006 store hoggs and what a trade for all forward! The large entry means we’ve sold just over 5000 stores in the first three weeks of the year to average £61.54. Best today at £75.50 for Seward Folland of Puddington, £75, £74.50 & £69.50 for David & Lynda Pellow of Sourton, £74.50 (x2) for BEJ Hallet of Pennymoor, £74 & £70 (x2) for Trevor & Trish Bolt of Huntsham and £73.50 & £72.50 for Phil Bond of Blackawton. More short term hoggs at £72 & £69 for Dan Kingdom of Pennymoor, £72 also for Dennis Tapp of Rackenford, Dudley Webber of Silverton and CJ Lee of Whitestone, meanwhile Milborne Wick Farms of Sherborne reached £71 and Graham Heal of High Bickington made £70.50. Six vendors sold their best at £70 and a plethora of pens at £69.50. Small and scruffy lambs look as dear as ever with very few less than £50, while the few hill bred sorts forward were £25-£52 depending on size. Overall average is up £1.68 to level at £62.77. 82 GRAZING & BREEDING EWES Five pens of Broken Mouth NC Mule breeding ewes sold scanned in lamb for the end of Feb to £91 (x2), £86 & £80 (x2) for Oliver Robins of Wheddon Cross while grazers sold to £70.50 & £58.50 for Louise Folland of Puddington and £69.50 for a ram from Kye Trevelyan of Westleigh. 137 COUPLES (57 EWES & 80 LAMBS) Another tight and varied entry of ewes with lambs at foot sold to a straight and enthusiastic trade topping at £180 (£60/life) for young ewe Continental cross doubles with young lambs from Kye Trevelyan of Westleigh, other doubles to £178 & £174 (£59.33 & £58/life) for flock aged mainly Suffolk cross ewes with sizable lambs from Marian Ash of Harbertonford and £170 (£56.67/life) for nice Dorset doubles from SF Langworthy of Sidmouth. More doubles to £164 (£54.67/life) for a Jacob x Dorset from Gaden & Morish and also for Michelle Parish of Uffculme. Singles sold to £141 (£70.50/life) for both Marian Ash with similar pens to her doubles and Gaden & Morish of Bratton Clovelly with pure Dorsets, and £140 (£70/life) for Richard Smaridge of East Allington with Suffolk cross singles. Further pens of singles at £138 for Marian Ash, £136 for Kevin Dinnis of Tedburn St Mary, £135 for SF Langworthy and £130 for Tracey Pike. Plain and indifferently bred types harder to place and upsetting the averages which were down per outfit to the tune of £10 to £136 whilst per life they levelled at £56.62, back £2.
