The Gardens and Grounds The grounds are a particular feature of Selgars Mill, being dominated by the water. The mill leat feeds through the beautiful, large mill pond to the rear of the house and cottages and being home to a variety of wild flora and fauna, including mallard and water loving plants. From here it feeds under a bridge, via the mill race, past the original outshot mill wheel and back under the entrance driveway to the mill leat, which then runs down beside the gardens to rejoin the river. The entrance drive leads around to the gravel forecourt and sweep on the south side of the house, adjacent to which are well stocked plant beds and a further level formal lawned garden area, partly enclosed by the walls of an old building and with a pergola supporting climbing plants including rose and wisteria. Beyond the formal garden, extensive level lawns interspersed with ornamental trees extend to the banks of the river. Within this area is a now dilapidated hard tennis court. From the mill pond the river runs out over a weir beside a sluice gate and continues all around the edge of the gardens. On the opposite side of the river a field has been planted with a plethora of indigenous trees including oak. An overflow from the mill pond feeds into a further small pond to the rear of the cottages. Beyond the mill pond and to the east of the driveway is a further field extensively planted with a variety of trees including oak, beech, cherry, ash and walnut.
