The pandemic has made essential self distancing and quarantining to arrest the spread of the Corona virus. As a result, most APS activities have been shelved for the time being. Being in isolation at home has been a mixed blessing. -

EREMOPHILA STUDY GROUP NEWSLETTER NO. 8. OCTOBER 1977 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES Geoff Needham Our aims and objectives were published in the first Newsletter. After five years of activity, now would be an appropriate time to review our achievements. 1. 'To draw attention to the attractiveness of many species of the genus the majority of which are unknown to horticulture.' This objective has been carried out most effectively, as eremophilas are now sold by many nurseries. Lectures have been given by our members to S.G.A.P. and to other societies. Ken Wames has presented lectures, together with many slides, in four States; articles have appeared in "Australian Plants", and much has been published in books on Australiana. Specimens have been provided for interstate flower shows as well as for general meetings. No criticism can be made of our achievements in this aspect. 2. 'To ascertain the conditions necessary for the successful cultivation of Eremophilo species.' With the build-up in the number of species in cultivation, plus an increase in membership, we have achieved the first step, of growing the plants, but we are sadly lacking in feedback information on their performance in various conditions. To be more specific, the amount of data sent in by members is almost non-existent. Obviously we need this data to ascertain the best conditions. It has been suggested that printed questionnaires could be sent out for members to fill in. This would also make the compiling of answers easier. 3. 'To select the most suitable species for garden culture.' Field trips by our members and other interested people, and those who succeeded in propagating the cuttings, have introduced many more species to culture. -

Appendix 1 Vernacular Names
Appendix 1 Vernacular Names The vernacular names listed below have been collected from the literature. Few have phonetic spellings. Spelling is not helped by the difficulties of transcribing unwritten languages into European syllables and Roman script. Some languages have several names for the same species. Further complications arise from the various dialects and corruptions within a language, and use of names borrowed from other languages. Where the people are bilingual the person recording the name may fail to check which language it comes from. For example, in northern Sahel where Arabic is the lingua franca, the recorded names, supposedly Arabic, include a number from local languages. Sometimes the same name may be used for several species. For example, kiri is the Susu name for both Adansonia digitata and Drypetes afzelii. There is nothing unusual about such complications. For example, Grigson (1955) cites 52 English synonyms for the common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) in the British Isles, and also mentions several examples of the same vernacular name applying to different species. Even Theophrastus in c. 300 BC complained that there were three plants called strykhnos, which were edible, soporific or hallucinogenic (Hort 1916). Languages and history are linked and it is hoped that understanding how lan- guages spread will lead to the discovery of the historical origins of some of the vernacular names for the baobab. The classification followed here is that of Gordon (2005) updated and edited by Blench (2005, personal communication). Alternative family names are shown in square brackets, dialects in parenthesis. Superscript Arabic numbers refer to references to the vernacular names; Roman numbers refer to further information in Section 4. -

(Lamiaceae) is a perennial aromatic herb, which is widespread in the high altitude areas of the central and eastern parts of South Africa and also occurs in southwest Botswana and central Namibia. It is closely related to Salvia runcinata L. f. and Salvia repens Burch, ex Benth., with which it forms a species complex. The most recent revision of southern African Salvia species is that by Codd (1985). In this revision, the most important characters used in delimiting the three taxa were corolla size, calyx size and trichome density. As a result of intergrading morphological characters, the specific limits between the three taxa are not clear and positive identification of typical material is often difficult. Taxonomic delimitation through use of chemical characters was therefore the principle objective of this study. The taxa represented in this species complex are known in folk medicine and plant extracts have been used in the treatment of urticaria, body sores, and stomach ailments and as a disinfectant. -

LandCorp Denmark East Development Precinct Flora and Fauna Survey October 2016 Executive summary Introduction Through the Royalties for Regions “Growing our South” initiative, the Shire of Denmark has received funding to provide a second crossing of the Denmark River, to upgrade approximately 6.5 km of local roads and to support the delivery of an industrial estate adjacent to McIntosh Road. GHD Pty Ltd (GHD) was commissioned by LandCorp to undertake a biological assessment of the project survey area. The purpose of the assessment was to identify and describe flora, vegetation and fauna within the survey area. The outcomes of the assessment will be used in the environmental assessment and approvals process and will identify the possible need for, and scope of, further field investigations will inform environmental impact assessment of the road upgrades. The survey area is approximately 68.5 ha in area and includes a broad area of land between Scotsdale Road and the Denmark River and the road reserve and adjacent land along East River Road and McIntosh Road between the Denmark Mt Barker Road and South Western Highway. A 200 m section north and south along the Denmark Mt Barker Road from East River Road was also surveyed. The biological assessment involved a desktop review and three separate field surveys, including a winter flora and fauna survey, spring flora and fauna survey and spring nocturnal fauna survey. Fauna surveys also included the use of movement sensitive cameras in key locations. Key biological aspects The key biological aspects and constraints identified for the survey area are summarised in the following table. -

DETECTION OF SELECTIVE TYROSINASE INHIBITORS FROM SOME SOUTH AFRICAN PLANT EXTRACTS OF LAMIACEAE FAMILY By Ninon Geornest Eudes Ronauld ETSASSALA A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science Department of Chemistry Faculty of Natural Sciences University of the Western Cape Supervisor: Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Co-supervisor: Prof. Emmanuel Iwuoha AUGUST 2016 ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Various dermatological disorders, such as formation of black pigmented patches on the surface of the skin arise from the over-activity of tyrosinase enzyme’s degenerative action. This enzyme is further implicated in the involvement of melanin in malignant melanoma, the most life- threatening skin tumors. Although, synthetic products were found effective to combat this menace, nevertheless, overtime detrimental effect on human skin is a challenge. Investigation of natural tyrosinase inhibitors from methanol extracts of medicinal plants of Lamiaceae family using L-tyrosine as substrate on three different complementary assays (TLC bio-autography, spectrophotometry and cyclic voltammetry) was carried out accordingly. The result indicated Salvia chamelaeagnea, Salvia dolomitica, Plectranthus ecklonii, Plectranthus namaensis, and Plectranthus zuluensis, with significant zone of inhibition against tyrosinase on TLC bio-autography, spectrophotometry result showed that extracts of Plectranthus ecklonii (IC50 = 21.58 휇g/mL), Plectranthus zuluensis (IC50 = 23.99 휇g/mL), Plectranthus madagascariensis (IC50 = 23.99 휇g/mL) and Salvia lanceolata (IC50 = 28.83) demonstrated good anti-tyrosinase activity when compared with kojic acid (IC50 = 3.607 μg/mL). On the other hand, cyclic voltammetry are in consonant with above results thereby supported the nomination of some of the extracts as strong anti-tyrosinase agents. -

Efficacy of herbal remedies is determined by the phytochemical profile which is dependent on the species, locality and growth conditions. Salvia stenophylla (Burch. ex Benth.) is a local aromatic sage growing in almost all South African biomes, with the volatile compound accumulation varying depending on season, locality and genotype. Salvia stenophylla extracts have proven anti-inflammatory, anti-plasmodial, anti-oxidant and anti-anxiety properties due to the presence of essential oils, flavonoids and caffeic acid derived phytochemicals. As a result, S. stenophylla extracts are increasingly being used for the formulation of pharmaceutical and cosmeceutical products. -
