Balkan Rivers Tour - Event # 2: Soča River (Si), April 18-19

River Soča is ’s most famous river and a hotspot for the global flyfishing community. It surfaces as an impressive karst spring in the Trenta Valley, inside National Park in the . After 137 km, it discharges into the Adriatic Sea in Italy. Along the river, climatic conditions change from harsh alpine to submediterranean, creating a picturesque region of high biodiversity. The highly diverse valley is characterized by deep narrow gorges as well as wide alluvial gravel plains. It is one of the very few places where genetically pure marble trouts (Salmo marmoratus) can be found.

While five big as well as many small hydroelectric power plants are already operating on the river, many more are planned in the upper Soča Basin, particularly on the Učja River, one of the most intact tributaries of Soča.
