DOCUMENTA & INSTRUMENTA, 1 (2004), PP. 179-201 _______________________________________________________________________________ EN TORNO A LA MONEDA VISIGODA ABOUT VISIGHOTIC COINAGE MARÍA RUIZ TRAPERO Universidad Complutense de Madrid Resumen: En este artículo se intenta contribuir a través de la investigación de fuentes monetarias al conocimiento actual de la moneda visigoda. Se parte de las series monetarias emitidas en Hispania de patrón ponderal romano de base duodecimal, ajustado a la reforma constantiniana acuñadas por los visigodos durante la Edad Media, con organización jurídico-administrativa también romana y con tipos montéales que incluso nacen de la imitación del arte imperial. Imitación seguida desde Leovigildo por todos sus sucesores hasta el final de sus emisiones, al establecer la moneda propiamente nacional sobre la base de las provincias romanas. Palabras clave: Investigación numismática, fuentes de información histórica. Abstract: This article tries to contribute to the knowledge of visighotic coinage, through monetary sources. The beginning are the coins that were coined in Hispania by Visigoths; these were of roman system, fit to reform of Constantine. Its juridical-administrative organisation is also roman and its types born of imitation of imperial art. This imitation is followed to Leovigild, when the properly national coinage is established on the base of Roman provinces. Keywords: Numismatic investigation, sources of historic information. Las emisiones visigodas son emisiones hispánicas y su moneda es documento vivo de su historia que desde Leovigildo define, sin apartarse del patrón ponderal y del sistema romano al que pertenecen; reflejo de ese nuevo Estado, a la romana, sí, pero jurídicamente independiente, con personalidad política propia. Leovigildo aprovecha la impronta de sus monedas para transmitir y propagar, a través de un proceso perfectamente programado, su profundo sentido político. -

Mentor: Ori Z. Soltes, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This thesis seeks to discover what made it possible for such an extraordinary cultural flourishing to occur among Muslims, Jews, and Christians in tenth century Muslim Spain during the reign of the Umayyad Muslim leader Abd al-Rahman III and his Jewish vizier (minister of state), Hasdai ibn Shaprut. What historical, societal, and personal factors made it possible for these two leaders to collaborate? My analysis primarily looks at the time of Muslim rule in Medieval Spain (called al-Andalus by the Muslims and Sepharad by the Jews) from 711 to 1031 C.E. However, in order to place that time period in context, it is important to look at what was happening in Spain before the Muslim invasion as well as what was happening in the known world, in particular the Mediterranean basin, from the first to the eleventh centuries. For example, the Muslim empire spread rapidly in the seventh and eighth centuries, eventually encompassing the territories from Spain to the Indus River and controlling all the trade routes across the Mediterranean. -

The received wisdom, according to which the converts retained their Jewish faith and practised it in secret,1 has been questioned by scholars who maintain that the “con- verso danger” was a product of clerical imagination and inquisitorial practice,2 and that only after the expulsion of 1492 did this situation change radically.3 Historians currently exploring the “converso dualities” have contributed to more sophisticated Henriette-Rika Benveniste interpretations.4 University of Thessaly The article examines conversion during the seventh century. Barbero and M. I. Loring With the abandonment of Arianism at the Third Council of Toledo in 589, there began a new phase in the evolution of the Visigothic kingdom. Religious unification facilitated the definitive rapprochement of the Gothic nobility and upper classes of Roman origin, and allowed the Catholic church, the principal repository of the old Roman culture, to acquire a growing prominence in the political life of the kingdom.1 This active political role was expressed principally through the series of national church councils in Toledo, the regal metropolis, initiated by that of 589.Inthese the church seemed to play the role of arbiter between the royal power and the high nobility, although a close reading of the conciliar acts reveals its tendency to act in solidarity with the secular nobility. Kings, on the other hand, only exceptionally made use of the councils in order to assert their authority and were generally obliged to negotiate in the face of the powerful secular nobility and church, this being one of the main causes of the weakness of centralised authority. Religious unification also made way for a progressive interpenetration of the spiritual and temporal spheres at every level of Visigothic life and society, in which the former shaped the whole dominant ideological structure. -

TARRAGONA DURANTE LOS VISIGODOS A TRAVÉS DE SUS ACUÑACIONES MONETARIAS (NOTAS PALEOGRÁF1CAS, NUMISMÁTICAS E HISTÓRICAS) Uno de los más elocuentes testimonios del carácter de la España visigoda es, tal vez, el que menos se ha tenido en cuenta al estudiar aquélla: la moneda, las acuñaciones monetarias de la monarquía, que se presentan sin interrupción desde el siglo V al VIII, es decir desde los tiempos de Eurico (466-484) hasta los de D. Rodrigo (710-711), ya en el período del reino de Tolosa con sus imitaciones de la moneda bizantina, ya en el del reino de Toledo con sus acuñaciones independientes de aquel tipo, a partir de Leovigildo. Si otras fuentes de estudio de aquel Estado no hubiera, la moneda nos daría elementos suficientes para ver sus vicisitudes, su carácter, su duración. Y, sin embargo, frecuentemente se olvidan estos que, con desdén, son llamados toscos y pequeños productos de aquellos tiempos, cuando tienen tan considerable valor documental. Su estudio de conjunto ha sido hecho varias veces, pero como el tiempo no pasa en balde, nuevos hallazgos de material aportan novedades de interés. Por otra parte no ha sido hecha, todavía, la historia de cada una de las cecas más importantes del reino godo, que tanto pueden ilus- trar el conocimiento global de la moneda de aquel Estado; y una de estas ciudades talleres monetarios, que por su extraordinaria impor- tancia marcan los jalones de la institución económica que nos ocupa, es Tarragona cuya significación en aquel tiempo excede de toda pon- deración por lo que a la España oriental se refiere. -
