Ennore Port was declared as major port on March 23, 1999. First Major Port incorporated as a company under the Companies Act, 1956 on October 11, 1999. The commercial operation of Port was started on June 22, 2001. Infrastructures with a Pinch of Salt: Comparative techno-politics of desalination in Chennai and London Thesis submitted to University College London for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Niranjana Ramesh Department of Geography University College London April 2018 DECLARATION I, Niranjana Ramesh confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 ABSTRACT Infrastructures, being technological networks that form the structural and social scaffolding of cities, have been symbiotic with modern urban development. Building on their socio-technical character, this thesis seeks to understand the technological mediation of political formations and environmental knowledges that shape notions of urban sustainability. It takes as its point of departure the construction of reverse osmosis desalination plants to augment water supply in two cities across the global South and North – Chennai, India and London, UK. It uses the analytic of infrastructure to excavate the complex reasons as to why and how desalination plants came to be built in these cities. Over a period of 10 months, oral and documentary narratives were gathered from institutions, professionals and citizens involved in water supply and access in the two cities. Based on a comparative reading of these texts and ethnographic field notes, the thesis focuses on the state and engineering practices as significant determinants of urban techno-natures. It demonstrates that infrastructures provide a mode of articulating statehood through mediation between technology, nature and society. It traces how engineers and other water professionals, through their everyday work, socialise those water systems, cultivating popular environmental knowledges. -

Dear friends, It gives me great pleasure to write you once again as your State President. There has been a lot of happenings since my last letter to our TIMA edition. On 21/02/21, I attended the leadership orientation program at Nagapattinam for the office bearers of east and south zones. On the same day I attended the installation ceremony of new office bearers of IMA Tiruvarur. On 23/02/21 I went to Chennai with regards to our land acquisition. On the 27&28th February 2021, I was in Courtallam to preside over the management committee meetings of FSS, PPLSSS including their trust board meeting Dr. P. RAMAKRISHNAN and NHB along with FSC which was held on 27/02/21. State President, IMA TNSB In the just concluded PPLSSS management committee Ph: 9842491919 meeting it was decided to enhance the premium paid , by one thousand (Rs. 1,000/-) to raise the compensation [email protected] from five lakhs to ten lakhs and by two thousand rupees (Rs. 2,000/-) to raise the compensation from ten lakhs to officer of central crime branch. Along with our state secretary twenty lakhs , keeping in mind the rising compensation I met the labour commissioner Mr. Vallalar to discuss the level. In the same meeting it was resolved to appoint two difficulties faced by our members with regards to minimum past office bearers of PPLSSS to it's trust board and the wages and requested him to write to his officers to stick to the names will be announced in the state council meeting. -
