  • Italy's Colonial Futures
Italy’s Colonial Futures: Colonial Inertia and Postcolonial Capital in Asmara Mia Fuller Asmara is no longer a secret. --Naigzy Gebremedhin (2007, 25) The mal d’Africa of the nineteenth century has been supplanted by the mal d’Europa of the twentieth century. --Ruth Iyob (2005b, 271) Italy hardly appears likely to acquire colonial territories in the future, though it participates in some of the West’s wars and peacekeeping efforts (the Iraq coalition and NATO’s assault on Qadhafi’s regime; Eritrea and Lebanon) – all of them, from one point of view, legacies of the colonial era. Instead, this article takes into consideration a different sort of colonial future: one inherent in an unconcluded colonial past. Italy certainly has a colonial past, albeit one that is often described as rimosso (“repressed” or “displaced”), suggesting it is less than accessible, and perhaps hard to locate. Although it is true that most Italians are poorly informed about their country’s past deeds and misdeeds in Eritrea, Somalia, Libya, the Dodecanese Islands, Ethiopia, and Albania, I claim here that rather than invisible, the traces of Italy’s colonial ventures are ubiquitous. This is true of Italy itself, if one knows where to look, but in this essay I am interested in the former colonies above all. In Asmara, the capital city of the ex-colony of Eritrea, I describe Italy’s colonial inertia, or how Italy’s once-vigorously implanted colonial signature has sustained momentum and shows every promise of continuing to do so. When Italian colonizers left in the post-World War Two era, their refashioning of built, cultural, and social environments to their own specifications did not vanish with them.1 On the contrary, Italians’ architectural and urban interventions, along with social, economic, and linguistic reminders of their occupation of Asmara, have been preserved quite faithfully.

Brendan Martin Dr. Rebecca Conard Dr. Moses Tesi To the spirit of my pure mother who died while waiting for this moment. ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This study would not been possible without the support of my family, Sirte University, professors, Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), and other institutions. First of all, I would like to express my deep gratitude to my parents for their unlimited support at all levels: to my mother, who died while encouraging and waiting on me for this moment, and to my father, who gave support to me to help me achieve my goals. Special thanks to my wife, who stood with me in every detail in this journey, who supported and encouraged me emotionally and psychologically. I must thank my university, Sirte University, which gave me a great opportunity by nominating me for a scholarship for a doctoral degree abroad so that I could return to enrich the university. Unfortunately, the events following the Arab Spring derailed our original plans, but my gratitude remains. My great gratitude goes to my dissertation committee members. I am in debt of acknowledgment to Dr. Amy Sayward for her invaluable support in every detail of my journey since the first meeting with her in May 2010 until this moment; thank you for your guidance, teaching, advice, full kindness, and sympathizing.

He was an Islamic scholar and revolutionary who heroically led the resistance against the Italian occupation of Libya for almost 20 years. Commonly known as the ‘Lion of the Desert,’ Omar spent his youth studying Islam and became a hafidh at a young age. He spent many years as a teacher of the Quran, until 1911 when Italian forces invaded Libya. Now 53 years old, his life was about to take a new turn. Determined to defend his people from what Italian fascists described as the ‘Roman Reconquista,’ Omar and his small groups of men skilfully attacked outposts, ambushed troops and cut critical supply routes, astonishing and embarrassing the highly advanced Italian Royal Army and its troops who were half his age. Omar’s character and integrity impressed even his enemies, sticking to Islamic principles during the horrors of war and brutal occupation.

DESCRIPTORS *Arabs; *Ethnic Stereotypes; Islamic Culture; *Negative Attitudes; *Popular Culture; *Public Opinion; *Social Bias ABSTRACT This document addresses the negative image of Arabs among the U.S. public. While formal education has created many of the misconceptions about Arabs that aboulid in the west, many of the misconceptions come from the informal education of popular culture. The western image of the Arab is possibly more interesting than the reality of Arab culture. The American stereotype of Arabs is important for two reasons: (1) it interferes with the understanding of a vitally important area of the world and its people, and (2) the Arab stereotype, while it teaches us little about the Arabs, teaches us a good deal about ourselves and the mechanisms of prejudice. The book examines in sequence different areas of popular culture about Arabs: jokes, cartoons, popular songs, and especially cinema. A chart based on two reference catalogs produced by the American Film Institute in listing every movie form the 1920s and the 1960s, showing the frequency of themes in movies about Arabs, shows three main things:(1) the Arab world has changed, but the Arab stereotype has not;(2) Hollywood's Middle East has become a more sinister place; and (3) there has been a change toward more explicitly anti-Arab movie genres.
