On nema nikakve druge stvarnosti.

Historiographical editions have been chronologically divided into three significant periods of the- ir publication, which correspond to important historical and poli- tical epochs: the first period being from the dissolution of the Au- stro-Hungarian Monarchy and the entry of the Croatian people into the first Yugoslav state in 1918 to the collapse of the Independent State of Croatia in 1945; the second from the establishment of the second Yugoslavia until its disintegration, from 1945 to 1989; and the third from the beginning of the democratic changes in 1990 and the creation of the present Croatian state. The article shows that the works published by Matica mirrored in many ways the political as- pirations of each epoch, as has been amply documented in this ar- ticle. The historiographical editions published by Matica Hrvatska during the 20th century undoubtedly reflect various political and so- cial changes that influenced the publishing policy of this oldest Cro- atian cultural institution. Its publishing activity experienced a parti- cular boom during the presidency of Filip Lukas between 1928 and 1945, which is certainly one of the most productive periods in the history of Matica in terms of publishing and of cultural promotion.

They arrived in an organized manner to the eastern Adriatic coast and the re- gion bordered by the Drina, Drava and Danube rivers in the first half of the seventh century, during the time of major Avar-Byzan- tine Wars and general upheavals in Europe. • Croatia, ‘Greater Serbianism’, and the Conflict Between East and West
2441Chapter4 16/10/02 8:04 am Page 98 4 Croatia, ‘Greater Serbianism’, and the conflict between East and West Christ’s remarkable principle: ‘Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them that use and persecute you.’ That selfless sentiment has remained throughout history a cry of the weak, or an expression of those who have accepted their doom . No matter how many exam- ples can be found in life and history to support such renunciation, it has never overcome the passions of hatred and the desire to dominate or to take revenge. (Franjo Tudjman, Horrors of War) ERBIA WAS CERTAINLY not alone in its revision of history, nor in its use of national mythology. The Croatian government also saw the merits of Sreinterpreting history to buttress their own political objectives. Many of Croatia’s most interesting national myths were created well before the collapse of Yugoslavia. Franjo Tudjman’s rise to power in 1990, and the even- tual independence of Croatia, after almost five decades of Communist federalism, engendered a fertile climate for national myth creation. Croatia’s national propaganda evolved within an authoritarian context, and many of the central themes favoured by Croatian writers were similar to those advanced by their Serbian counterparts. The spectre of ‘Greater Serbia’ – which became likened to an anti-Semitism for Croats – was remarkably similar to Serbophobia. Many other myths appeared to be a reaction to a fear and strong distrust of the Serbs. Several, like the ‘state right’ tradition, the Antemurale Christianitatis, and Medjugorje, proved the existence of a civilised, peace-loving and enlightened Croatia.

UDK: 355.45(497.5)’’1990/1992’’ AGGRESSION OF THE YUGOSLAV PEOPLE’S ARMY ON THE REPUBLIC OF CROATIA 19901992 Davor MARIJAN* After the death of Josip Broz Tito in 1980, the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) entered into a long political and economic crisis. The period saw increased Greater-Serbian nationalism directed against a state whose federal framework had been based on its 1974 Constitution. The engagement of the Yugoslav People’s Army (JNA) in the resolution of the crisis showed that Greater-Serbian ideas deeply penetrated that institution. Serbs composed the largest share of the members of the JNA and for years it promoted an image of itself as the last defender of Tito’s heritage. The JNA became “an important political factor” and a shield protecting the country’s socialist system. It could not remain a peaceful observer of political chang- es in the SFRY.1 The JNA, together with Territorial Defense forces (TO), constituted the armed forces of the SFRY.2 The TO had been an organization of each of the SFRY’s constituent republics. It had less arms than the JNA and had been designed primarily to control territory.3 The JNA and TO had been creat- ed to be fully equal and in war-time circumstances they had to complement each other in accordance with the national military strategy of “total nation- al resistance.” Like the JNA which came under the competency of the SFRY Note: All documents, unless noted otherwise, are in the possession of the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Croatia.

XII 1918. 4 5 ON THE REASONS FOR AN EXHIBITION ABOUT THE CREATION OF YUGOSLAVIA The main reason for the exhibition The Day Worth a Century is the centenary of the Yugoslav unification, i.e. the formal act of proclamation of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, which falls on 1 December 2018. As one of the few institutions that still bear the name of the former state in their own name, the Museum of Yugoslavia has a duty to adequately mark the cente- nary of the formation of that state. In addition to the exhibition, the centenary is to be marked with a conference entitled The Musealization of Yugoslavia – Free- zing or Renegotiating Shared Heritage, which is to take place on 2-3 Decem- ber 2018. At this moment in time, twenty years after its founding, the Mu- seum of Yugoslavia is undergoing a process of rethinking its place and role; conception and systematization of collections; redefining its vision and attract- ing new audiences. The museum was created with the intention of safeguarding the collections of two institutions: the Memorial Center ‘Josip Broz Tito’ and the Museum of the Revolution of Nations and Nationalities of Yugoslavia, both of which were seen as relics of an obsolete ideology in the early 1990s. For several years, the Museum barely survived in conditions that were hardly adequate to secure its operation. Although various programmatic texts state that the Muse- um’s task is to study Yugoslavia from its formation to its dissolution, it has always been clear that the limitations of its collections and the strong memorial aspect of the building that houses it make it primarily a museum of socialist Yugoslavia.
