Systematic Narcissism
Systematic Narcissism Wendy W. Fok University of Houston Systematic Narcissism is a hybridization through the notion of the plane- tary grid system and the symmetry of narcissism. The installation is based on the obsession of the physical reflection of the object/subject relation- ship, created by the idea of man-made versus planetary projected planes (grids) which humans have made onto the earth. ie: Pierre Charles L’Enfant plan 1791 of the golden section projected onto Washington DC. The fostered form is found based on a triacontahedron primitive and devel- oped according to the primitive angles. Every angle has an increment of 0.25m and is based on a system of derivatives. As indicated, the geometry of the world (or the globe) is based off the planetary grid system, which, according to Bethe Hagens and William S. Becker is a hexakis icosahedron grid system. The formal mathematical aspects of the installation are cre- ated by the offset of that geometric form. If all of the sides have the same length and all of the angles are congruent, the polygon is called regular. The sum of the angles of a regular polygon with n sides, where n is 3 or more, is 180° x (n – 2) degrees. If a regular polygon were connected with other regular polygons in three dimensional space, a polyhedron could be created. In geometry, a polyhedron is a three- dimensional solid which consists of a collection of polygons joined at their edges. The word polyhedron is derived from the Greek word poly (many) and the Indo-European term hedron (seat). -

Can Every Face of a Polyhedron Have Many Sides ? Branko Grünbaum Dedicated to Joe Malkevitch, an old friend and colleague, who was always partial to polyhedra Abstract. The simple question of the title has many different answers, depending on the kinds of faces we are willing to consider, on the types of polyhedra we admit, and on the symmetries we require. Known results and open problems about this topic are presented. The main classes of objects considered here are the following, listed in increasing generality: Faces: convex n-gons, starshaped n-gons, simple n-gons –– for n ≥ 3. Polyhedra (in Euclidean 3-dimensional space): convex polyhedra, starshaped polyhedra, acoptic polyhedra, polyhedra with selfintersections. Symmetry properties of polyhedra P: Isohedron –– all faces of P in one orbit under the group of symmetries of P; monohedron –– all faces of P are mutually congru- ent; ekahedron –– all faces have of P the same number of sides (eka –– Sanskrit for "one"). If the number of sides is k, we shall use (k)-isohedron, (k)-monohedron, and (k)- ekahedron, as appropriate. We shall first describe the results that either can be found in the literature, or ob- tained by slight modifications of these. Then we shall show how two systematic ap- proaches can be used to obtain results that are better –– although in some cases less visu- ally attractive than the old ones. There are many possible combinations of these classes of faces, polyhedra and symmetries, but considerable reductions in their number are possible; we start with one of these, which is well known even if it is hard to give specific references for precisely the assertion of Theorem 1. -

This ball was an unnoticed invention. It appeared more than twenty years earlier than the first truncated icosahedral soccer ball. In connection with the colouring of this beach-ball, the present paper investigates the following problem: How many colourings of the dodecahedron with five colours exist such that all vertices of each face are coloured differently? The paper shows that four ways of colouring exist and refers to other colouring problems, pointing out a defect in the colouring of the original beach-ball. Ho˙za 69, 00-681 Warszawa, Poland, EU We introduce a new operator in Loop Quantum Gravity - the 3D curvature operator - related to the 3-dimensional scalar curvature. The construction is based on Regge Calculus. We define this operator starting from the classical expression of the Regge curvature, we derive its properties and discuss some explicit checks of the semi-classical limit. I. INTRODUCTION Loop Quantum Gravity [1] is a promising candidate to finally realize a quantum description of General Relativity. The theory presents two complementary descriptions based on the canon- ical and the covariant approach (spinfoams) [2]. The first implements the Dirac quantization procedure [3] for GR in Ashtekar-Barbero variables [4] formulated in terms of the so called holonomy-flux algebra [1]: one considers smooth manifolds and defines a system of paths and dual surfaces over which the connection and the electric field can be smeared. The quantiza- tion of the system leads to the full Hilbert space obtained as the projective limit of the Hilbert space defined on a single graph. The second is instead based on the Plebanski formulation [5] of GR, implemented starting from a simplicial decomposition of the manifold, i.e. restricting to piecewise linear flat geometries. Even if the starting point is different (smooth geometry in the first case, piecewise linear in the second) the two formulations share the same kinematics [6] namely the spin-network basis [7] first introduced by Penrose [8]. -

This report may be viewed as a tutorial and a set of notes on convex sets, polytopes, polyhedra, combinatorial topology, Voronoi Diagrams and Delaunay Triangulations. It is intended for a broad audience of mathematically inclined readers. One of my (selfish!) motivations in writing these notes was to understand the concept of shelling and how it is used to prove the famous Euler-Poincar´eformula (Poincar´e,1899) and the more recent Upper Bound Theorem (McMullen, 1970) for polytopes. Another of my motivations was to give a \correct" account of Delaunay triangulations and Voronoi diagrams in terms of (direct and inverse) stereographic projections onto a sphere and prove rigorously that the projective map that sends the (projective) sphere to the (projective) paraboloid works correctly, that is, maps the Delaunay triangulation and Voronoi diagram w.r.t. the lifting onto the sphere to the Delaunay diagram and Voronoi diagrams w.r.t. the traditional lifting onto the paraboloid. Here, the problem is that this map is only well defined (total) in projective space and we are forced to define the notion of convex polyhedron in projective space. -

Recently, an efficient algorithm for this problem has been developed when Q is a box. We extend this idea to regular polyhedra, also known as Platonic solids. The basic idea of our algorithms is common, which is called stamping. However, the computational complexities of them are different depending on their geometric properties. We developed four algorithms for the problem as follows. (1) An algorithm for a regular tetrahedron, which can be extended to a tetramonohedron. (2) An algorithm for a regular hexahedron (or a cube), which is much efficient than the previously known one. (3) An algorithm for a general deltahedron, which contains the cases that Q is a regular octahedron or a regular icosahedron. (4) An algorithm for a regular dodecahedron. Combining these algorithms, we can conclude that the folding problem can be solved pseudo-polynomial time when Q is a regular polyhedron and other related solid. Convex Polytopes and Tilings with Few Flag Orbits by Nicholas Matteo B.A. in Mathematics, Miami University M.A. in Mathematics, Miami University A dissertation submitted to The Faculty of the College of Science of Northeastern University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy April 14, 2015 Dissertation directed by Egon Schulte Professor of Mathematics Abstract of Dissertation The amount of symmetry possessed by a convex polytope, or a tiling by convex polytopes, is reflected by the number of orbits of its flags under the action of the Euclidean isometries preserving the polytope. The convex polytopes with only one flag orbit have been classified since the work of Schläfli in the 19th century. In this dissertation, convex polytopes with up to three flag orbits are classified. Two-orbit convex polytopes exist only in two or three dimensions, and the only ones whose combinatorial automorphism group is also two-orbit are the cuboctahedron, the icosidodecahedron, the rhombic dodecahedron, and the rhombic triacontahedron. Two-orbit face-to-face tilings by convex polytopes exist on E1, E2, and E3; the only ones which are also combinatorially two-orbit are the trihexagonal plane tiling, the rhombille plane tiling, the tetrahedral-octahedral honeycomb, and the rhombic dodecahedral honeycomb. Moreover, any combinatorially two-orbit convex polytope or tiling is isomorphic to one on the above list. Three-orbit convex polytopes exist in two through eight dimensions. There are infinitely many in three dimensions, including prisms over regular polygons, truncated Platonic solids, and their dual bipyramids and Kleetopes. There are infinitely many in four dimensions, comprising the rectified regular 4-polytopes, the p; p-duoprisms, the bitruncated 4-simplex, the bitruncated 24-cell, and their duals.
