Equivelar octahedron of genus 3 in 3-space Ruslan Mizhaev ([email protected]) Apr. 2020 ABSTRACT . Building up a toroidal polyhedron of genus 3, consisting of 8 nine-sided faces, is given. From the point of view of topology, a polyhedron can be considered as an embedding of a cubic graph with 24 vertices and 36 edges in a surface of genus 3. This polyhedron is a contender for the maximal genus among octahedrons in 3-space. 1. Introduction This solution can be attributed to the problem of determining the maximal genus of polyhedra with the number of faces - . As is known, at least 7 faces are required for a polyhedron of genus = 1 . For cases ≥ 8 , there are currently few examples. If all faces of the toroidal polyhedron are – gons and all vertices are q-valence ( ≥ 3), such polyhedral are called either locally regular or simply equivelar [1]. The characteristics of polyhedra are abbreviated as , ; [1]. 2. Polyhedron {9, 3; 3} V1. The paper considers building up a polyhedron 9, 3; 3 in 3-space. The faces of a polyhedron are non- convex flat 9-gons without self-intersections. The polyhedron is symmetric when rotated through 1804 around the axis (Fig. 3). One of the features of this polyhedron is that any face has two pairs with which it borders two edges. The polyhedron also has a ratio of angles and faces - = − 1. To describe polyhedra with similar characteristics ( = − 1) we use the Euler formula − + = = 2 − 2, where is the Euler characteristic. Since = 3, the equality 3 = 2 holds true. -

Systematic Narcissism Wendy W. Fok University of Houston Systematic Narcissism is a hybridization through the notion of the plane- tary grid system and the symmetry of narcissism. The installation is based on the obsession of the physical reflection of the object/subject relation- ship, created by the idea of man-made versus planetary projected planes (grids) which humans have made onto the earth. ie: Pierre Charles L’Enfant plan 1791 of the golden section projected onto Washington DC. The fostered form is found based on a triacontahedron primitive and devel- oped according to the primitive angles. Every angle has an increment of 0.25m and is based on a system of derivatives. As indicated, the geometry of the world (or the globe) is based off the planetary grid system, which, according to Bethe Hagens and William S. Becker is a hexakis icosahedron grid system. The formal mathematical aspects of the installation are cre- ated by the offset of that geometric form. The base of the planetary grid and the narcissus reflection of the modular pieces intersect the geometry of the interfacing modular that structures the installation BACKGROUND: Poetics: Narcissism is a fixation with oneself. The Greek myth of Narcissus depicted a prince who sat by a reflective pond for days, self-absorbed by his own beauty. Mathematics: In 1978, Professors William Becker and Bethe Hagens extended the Russian model, inspired by Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic dome, into a grid based on the rhombic triacontahedron, the dual of the icosidodeca- heron Archimedean solid. The triacontahedron has 30 diamond-shaped faces, and possesses the combined vertices of the icosahedron and the dodecahedron. -

This paper examines directed graphs related to convex polytopes. For each fixed d-polytope and any acyclic orientation of its graph, we prove there exist both convex and concave functions that induce the given orientation. For each combinatorial class of 3-polytopes, we provide a good characterization of the orientations that are induced by an affine function acting on some member of the class. Introduction A graph is d-polytopal if it is isomorphic to the graph G(P) formed by the vertices and edges of some (convex) d-polytope P. As the term is used here, a digraph is d-polytopal if it is isomorphic to a digraph that results when the graph G(P) of some d-polytope P is oriented by means of some affine function on P. 3-Polytopes and their graphs have been objects of research since the time of Euler. The most important result concerning 3-polytopal graphs is the theorem of Steinitz [SR], [Gr1], asserting that a graph is 3-polytopal if and only if it is planar and 3-connected. Also important is the related fact that the combinatorial type (i.e., the entire face-lattice) of a 3-polytope P is determined by the graph G(P). Steinitz’s theorem has been very useful in studying the combinatorial structure of 3-polytopes because it makes it easy to recognize the 3-polytopality of a graph and to construct graphs that represent 3-polytopes without producing an explicit geometric realization. -

We introduce this system of shapes, and discuss its use for teaching mathematics. At the workshop, we will provide a large number of pieces of various shapes, demonstrate their use, and give all participants the opportunity to build their own creations at the intersection of art and mathematics. Introduction Connecting pieces of paper by sliding them together along slits or cuts is a well-known method of building 3D objects ([2], [3], [4]). Based on this idea we developed a system of shapes1 that can be used to build arbitrarily complex structures. Among the geometric objects that can be built are Platonic, Archimedean, and Johnson solids, prisms and antiprisms, many nonconvex polyhedra, several space-filling tessellations, etc. Guided by an user’s imagination and creativity, simple objects can then be connected to form more complex constructs. Construction of Great IcosiDodecahedron This paper describes how to create the Great Icosidodecahedron analytically as a 3D object. This uniform polyhedron is particularly beautiful and can be constructed with 12 pentagrams and 20 equilateral triangles. You start with a pentagon and create the net for a Icosidodecahedron without the triangles (fig 1). Extend the sides of the pentagons to create pentagrams and fold the sides into the same planes as the icosidodecahedron and you get the first half of the polyhedron (fig 2). Now for the equilateral triangles. Pick every combination of two pentagrams where a single vertex shares a common point (fig 3). Create two equilateral triangles connecting the common vertex and each of the legs of the two pentagrams. Do this to for all pentagrams and you will come up with 20 distinct intersecting triangles. The final result is in figure 4. We can create the model using a second method. Based on the geometry of the existing model, create a single cup (fig 5). Add the adjoining pentagram star (fig 6). Now take this shape and rotate- duplicate for each plane of the pentagon icosidodecahedron and you get the model of figure 4. 1 Construction of Great IcosiDodecahedron fig1 The net for the Icosidodecahedron without the triangle faces. We compute the dimensions of a regular tetragonal pyramid, which allows a cut by a plane along a regular pentagon. In addition, we relate this construction to a simple construction of the icosahedron and make a conjecture on the impossibility to generalize such sections of regular pyramids. 1. Branes and Polytopes Luca Romano email address: [email protected] ABSTRACT We investigate the hierarchies of half-supersymmetric branes in maximal supergravity theories. By studying the action of the Weyl group of the U-duality group of maximal supergravities we discover a set of universal algebraic rules describing the number of independent 1/2-BPS p-branes, rank by rank, in any dimension. We show that these relations describe the symmetries of certain families of uniform polytopes. This induces a correspondence between half-supersymmetric branes and vertices of opportune uniform polytopes. We show that half-supersymmetric 0-, 1- and 2-branes are in correspondence with the vertices of the k21, 2k1 and 1k2 families of uniform polytopes, respectively, while 3-branes correspond to the vertices of the rectified version of the 2k1 family. For 4-branes and higher rank solutions we find a general behavior. The interpretation of half- supersymmetric solutions as vertices of uniform polytopes reveals some intriguing aspects. Plates. 1. ~NTRODUCTORY STATEMENT THE" crystallography of diamond presents problems of peculiar interest and difficulty. The material as found is usually in the form of complete crystals bounded on all sides by their natural faces, but strangely enough, these faces generally exhibit a marked curvature. The diamonds found in the State of Panna in Central India, for example, are invariably of this kind. Other diamondsJas for example a group of specimens recently acquired for our studies ffom Hyderabad (Deccan)--show both plane and curved faces in combination. Even those diamonds which at first sight seem to resemble the standard forms of geometric crystallography, such as the rhombic dodeca- hedron or the octahedron, are found on scrutiny to exhibit features which preclude such an identification. This is the case, for example, witb. the South African diamonds presented to us for the purpose of these studŸ by the De Beers Mining Corporation of Kimberley. From these facts it is evident that the crystallography of diamond stands in a class by itself apart from that of other substances and needs to be approached from a distinctive stand- point.
