Title: A Tiring Field Trip RESERVED BID: $75.00 Medium: Oil Image Dimensions: 16” X20” Unframed Canvas Artist: Joyce Carter – D22 Member

In 2012 I retired from teaching in the elementary panel for the TDSB, and previously for the former Etobicoke Board of Education. My experience was in the primary grades, and my passion was Kindergarten. I knew I’d have to fill that hole and thought I’d try “Art”. I had no idea whether or not I’d like it, and no previous experience; none from home, and no High School art. But, I’d always been “drawn” to artsy folks, and wished I could try it. The Kindergarten parents gave me a “Curry’s Gift Card”, as an end of the year present. I trepidly took classes; starting with watercolour. Then I switched briefly to pastels, then acrylics, and I am now trying oils. I love the learning process and the people I’ve met. The painting here is of one of my Junior Kindergarten students who fell asleep on the return bus trip from the “Sugar Bush”. He was pooped! I thought it was fitting for RTO, since I am now a member. This painting gives me fond memories of my students and my career, and in retirement I have found a new passion! I hope it gives you pleasure too.

Untitled RESERVED BID: $75.00 Medium: Chinese Brush Painting Image Dimensions: 17” X13” Double Matted and Framed Artist: Carol Howe – D22 Member

Born in Parry Sound to Chinese parents who moved the family to Etobicoke when I was three years old because my eldest sister, Lily, was set to attend U of T. Retired in ’99 from MCI having taught at several wonderful schools and having spent one year teaching in Hong Kong to discover my “roots “. The Chinese students were hardworking, respectful and incredibly disciplined. I discovered how Canadian I was and was extremely proud to be the product of two worlds! I have been studying Chinese brush painting for six years under an excellent teacher and artist, Mrs. Hera Cheng, from Taiwan. In addition to doing volunteer work (driving cancer patients for the Canadian Cancer Society), I take classes in Japanese calligraphy (called Shodo) under Mrs. Noriko Maeda as well as continuing my art classes. My other passions include classical music (TSO), theatre and dance (ballet) performances. I have taken two courses in Mandarin Chinese and can attest to the fact that it was a disaster, my parents being Cantonese-speaking. I like to keep busy! Item #11

Artist: Ina Puchala (brief Biography from her web page) Puchala’s formative years in Montreal and Sudbury shaped her artistic vocation. A city of longing and a mining town respectively, the two centers were filled with holes; fragmented narratives, both real and imagined, bound in a tension that sought negotiation by way of a creative vision. After working as a commercial artist for 11 years, Ina sought further validation by attending the Ontario College of Art (aka OCADU). In 1992, she earned an Honours’ A.O.C.A diploma in drawing and painting, along with garnering several awards and scholarships. From 2001 to 2005, she was a scenic painter for the National Ballet of Canada. Alongside her professional art practice, Ina continues to work as an artist educator and facilitator. Ms. Puchala is associated with Arts Etobicoke. This piece was donated by Karl Sprogis, 1st Vice- President D22, and Chair of Arts Etobicoke. Item #20

Artist: Jane Shaw – D22 Member

Growing up in Thunder Bay, I had a wonderful and inspirational Art teacher, Kay McCullough, who would sometimes bring Norval Morrisseau to class to paint with us! Throughout the years, I have always been involved in the creative arts – be it writing, sewing, batik, stained glass, drawing or painting. I have taken drawing, oil and watercolour classes and workshops at Sprinkbank, Riverwood and Neilson Visual Arts Centres. As well, I studied various mediums at the Spillane School of Fine Arts. The majority of my paintings are done in watercolours, but I also enjoy working in oil, pencil crayon, pastels, pen and ink and conte. Lately, I have been experimenting with alcohol inks which are notable for their vibrant colour. Since retiring from Martingrove C.I., I paint on Thursdays with a group of like-minded friends. Together, as “The Thursday Artists”, we have had several exhibits at various locations in Mississauga and Toronto. Item # 22
