The work comes under the umbrella of the Alcohol Epidemiology Project and is commissioned by the Victorian Department of Health. The primary aim of this project has been to establish key indicators of alcohol consumption and related harm within the Victorian community for the purpose of informing policy formulation, resource allocation, service planning and service monitoring. To date a number of indicators have been established at a regional and local community level. A detailed description of the methodology that has been developed within this project, along with the main findings, has been provided in a series of reports (Dietze et al., 1999, Laslett et al., 1996, Rumbold et al., 1997, Rumbold et al., 1998a). Following a review of The Victorian alcohol statistics series, this report presents findings over time and across seven indicators of harm for all LGAs and regions. Future editions of this report will update these data tables to provide continuity and consistency over time, providing a valuable resource to policymakers and planners and other interested parties. In addition, where possible, new indicators will be introduced in subsequent years. Turning Point Population Health Research Program The Population Health Research Program is a team of researchers with a background in alcohol and drug research, social sciences, statistics and public health. The program has established a number of core datasets relating to the epidemiology of alcohol and other drug use and related harms within the Victorian community. These include survey data, data concerning alcohol sales, hospital admissions, deaths, road crashes, crime, drug-related ambulance attendances and calls to DirectLine (the state-wide 24-hour alcohol and drug telephone counselling and referral service). i LIST OF TABLES Table 2.1 High alcohol hours used in the selection of alcohol-related road crash cases in metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas
