Overview: This program will provide an introduction to English history and culture from the arrival of Hengest and Horsa to the Battle of Bosworth Field. It will include consideration of the Anglo-Saxon, Anglo-Norman and Middle English periods. Readings (all in modern English) will be complemented by a series of interdisciplinary lectures and site visits. Classes will initially be conducted Monday-Thursday at Durham University; there will be two two-hour meetings per day. The morning sessions will be interdisciplinary lectures. Most of the afternoon sessions will be less formal discussions of the assigned readings; some sessions will be dedicated to preparation for site visits and movies.
