Running head: LAY PROFILES OF MASS AND SERIAL KILLERS Lay Profiles of Mass and Serial Killers Kelli Terrell, Narina Nunez University of Wyoming LAY PROFILES OF MASS AND SERIAL KILLERS 2 Abstract It was hypothesized that society profiles mass murderers in a very specific way contradicting the reality of who the offenders are statistically shown to be. It was correspondingly hypothesized that a mass murderer is labeled more commonly as mentally ill and socially isolated than a serial killer, regardless of the death toll. To assess the lay profile of killers, participants were randomly assigned to either a mass killer or serial killer crime scenario. They then read a brief description of the crime and completed extended response and multiple choice questions on characteristics of the offender. Results supported the hypothesis that the lay profile of a serial killer and mass killer differ in mental health differ greatly. Additionally, the hypothesis that the lay profile differs from who killers are statistically shown to be was both supported and denied. LAY PROFILES OF MASS AND SERIAL KILLERS 3 Introduction The United States’ Congressional Research Services acknowledges that there is no generally excepted definition for what a mass shooting is but loosely defines it as “incidents occurring in relatively public places, involving four or more deaths- not including the shooter(s)- and gunmen who select victims somewhat indiscriminately” (Bjelopera, 2013). Mass shootings are defined slightly differently in Public Law 112-265 as three or more killings in a single incident (United States Congress, 2013). The disparity between these two definitions highlights both the confusion and lack of research done in regards to mass shootings. -

Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal. -

The body of research in evolutionary psychology and ethology provide support for archetypal theory and the influence of archetypes (Hart & Brady, 2005; Maloney, 1999). Our idealized self is reflected in archetypes and it is possible that we draw on archetypal themes to compensate for a reduction in meaning in our modern day work life. Archetypal priming can touch a person’s true self and result in increased meaning in life. According to Faber and Mayer (2009), drawing from Jung (1968), an archetype is an, “internal mental model of a typical, generic story character to which an observer might resonate emotionally” (p. 307). Most contemporary researchers maintain that archetypal models are transmitted through culture rather than biology, as Jung originally argued (Faber & Mayer, 2009). Archetypes as mental models can be likened to image schemas, foundational mind/brain structures that are developed during human pre-verbal experience (Merchant, 2009). -

Laird Clark University In three previous studies, most subjects who anticipated having to perform an unpleasant task (e.g., eat a worm) and who were then offered a choice of that or a neutral task chose the unpleasant task. It was hypothesized that this "choosing to suffer" effect was produced by the subjects' attempt to make sense of their anticipated suffering, through one of three kinds of change in their conception of themselves and the situation: (a) they deserved the suffer- ing, (b) they were brave, or (c) the worm was not too bad. Subjects antici- pating a neutral task did not change on these measures, while subjects eating a worm changed significantly, indicating that anticipated suffering did cause the predicted reconceptualizations. Changes in these three kinds of conception predicted subject's choice or not of eating the worm, indicating that these changes produced the subsequent choice. Finally, subjects who saw them- selves as either more brave or more deserving also chose to administer painful electric shocks to themselves, while subjects who had changed their concep- tions of the worm did not, indicating that these conceptual changes can affect behavior in situations different from that which initially caused the conceptual changes. LLT 180 Lecture 22 1 Today we're gonna pick up with Gottfried von Strassburg. As most of you already know, and it's been alleged and I readily admit, that I'm an occasional attention slut. Obviously, otherwise, I wouldn't permit it to be recorded for TV. And, you know, if you pick up your Standard today, it always surprises me -- actually, if you live in Springfield, you might have met me before without realizing it. I like to cook and a colleague in the department -- his wife's an editor for the Springfield paper and she also writes a weekly column for the "Home" section. And so he and I were talking about pans one day and I was, you know, saying, "Well," you know, "so many people fail to cook because they don't have the perfect pan." And she was wanting to write an article about pans. She'd been trying to convince him to buy better pans. And so she said, "Hey, would you pose for a picture with pans? I'm writing this article." And so I said, "Oh, what the heck." And so she came over and took this photo. And a couple of weeks later, I opened Sunday morning's paper -- 'cause I knew it was gonna be in that week -- and went over to the "Home" section. And there was this color photo, about this big, and I went, "Oh, crap," you know. So whatever. Gottfried. Again, as they tell you here, we don't know much about these people, and this is really about love. -

Adoption Tax Benefits: An Overview Updated May 18, 2020 Congressional Research Service https://crsreports.congress.gov R44745 SUMMARY R44745 Adoption Tax Benefits: An Overview May 18, 2020 The federal government supports adoption in two primary ways: federal grants to state governments and tax benefits for individual taxpayers that help offset the costs of adopting a Margot L. Crandall-Hollick child. This report focuses on federal adoption tax benefits, which consist of an adoption tax credit Acting Section Research and an income tax exclusion for employer-provided adoption assistance. Manager The adoption tax credit helps qualifying taxpayers offset some of the costs of adopting a child. Although the credit may be claimed for nearly all types of adoptions (excluding the adoption of a spouse’s child), there are some special rules related to claiming the credit for international adoptions and for adoptions of children with special needs (generally children whom the state child welfare agency considers difficult to place for adoption). In 2020, taxpayers may be able to receive an adoption credit of up to $14,300 (this amount is annually adjusted for inflation). The credit is reduced for taxpayers with income over $214,520 and is phased out completely for taxpayers with more than $254,520 in income (these amounts are subject to annual inflation adjustment). The adoption credit is not refundable. However, the credit may be carried forward and claimed on future tax returns for up to five years after initially claimed. In addition, taxpayers whose employers offer qualifying adoption assistance programs as a fringe benefit may not have to pay income taxes on some or all of the value of this benefit.
