VOLUME 1, ISSUE 2 PUBLISHED: 31st January 2020 To update field colleagues and relevant stakeholders regarding animal disease situation in the country and related activities, the ''fortnightly e-bulletin on animal disease information of Bhutan'' is issued by Disease Prevention and Control Unit, National Centre for Animal Health, Department of Livestock. The information disseminated regarding animal disease outbreak(s) in the country is based on flash and follow-up reports received from the outbreak investigation team; and for real-time update, please visit our website, http://www.ncah.gov.bt Samdrup Jongkhar Dzongkhag An update - Rabies: 17th January 2020 (reported) Rabies outbreak was reported in Samdrup Gatshel village, Dewathang gewog, Samdrup Jongkhar, on 16th December 2019, and as of 16th January 2020, a total of 11 cattle and 4 stray dogs tested positive to the virus from several areas of the same gewog: Kesanggri, Domphu, Lungtsukpa, Rekhay, Borbilla, Dewathang town and Army compound; 6 men were reported to have been bitten by suspected dogs, and 88 men at risk have undergone PEP. In response to the outbreak, a total of 517 dogs and 141 cats were vaccinated with anti-rabies vaccine. All control measures have been implemented through collaborative affords from dzongkhag livestock sector, Samdrup Jongkhar; Regional Livestock Development Centre, Trashigang; Thromde Veterinary Hospital and Satellite Laboratory, Dewathang, Health officials, Dewathang Military Hospital; and BAFRA, Samdrup Jongkhar. Paro Dzongkhag Strangles: 25th January 2020 (reported) Outbreak of Strangles was reported from six villages of Tsento gewog, Paro dzongkhag since 17th January 2020, and as of 25th January, a total of 192 horses have been affected by the disease and one died. This outbreak is suspected to have spread from the outbreak reported in Barshong village, Naro gewog, Thimphu dzongkhag in October, 2019 – during which 77 horses were affected (69.37% morbidity) and 4 died (3.6% fatality). Dzongkhag livestock sector, Paro; Regional Livestock Development Centre, Tsimasham; and National Centre for Animal Health, Serbithang have been implementing necessary control measures to contain the outbreak from further spread, and the affected ones are recovering well. Following table shows the outbreak detail: Sarpang Dzongkhag Newcastle disease (suspected): 31st January 2020 (reported) Suspected Outbreak of Newcastle disease was reported in Gomchula-B village, Shompangkha gewog, Sarpang, on 27th January 2020. Four households are affected; 52 birds were affected and 29 succumbed to the infection, and 16,850 birds are at risk of contacting the infection. It was found that all affected households did not vaccinate their birds against Newcastle disease.
