The book documents a diabolical era, 1984-2001. It chronicles the evolution of a new aesthetic movement, a terrifying fringe of Underground Art where enlightenment and depravity combined. Murder, rape, torture, perversion, cannibalism, drugs, sedition, racism and blasphemy mixed with literature, history, politics, news, movies, TV, punk rock, philosophy and science. The book profiles a pantheon of dissidents and deviants, presents excerpts from their work, re-lives their crimes, and attempts to analyze an elusive era. The scene described herein is essentially the "second generation" of American Underground Art (the "first generation" ran from '66 through the 70s). All varieties of taboos and criminal advocacy found confluence, beyond "confrontation" or "shock." Pure sadism drove it. Sexual psychosis flavored it. Frustration with politics, big business and mass entertainment fueled it. This is art that kills.NEW EXPANDED AND REVISED EDITION INCLUDES: 32 extra pages. New sections featuring John Waters, H.R. • HOW BLACK IS BLACK METAL [JOURNALISMUS] Nachrichten Von Heute
HOW BLACK IS BLACK METAL [JOURNALISMUS] nachrichten von heute Kevin Coogan - Lords of Chaos (LOC), a recent book-length examination of the “Satanic” black metal music scene, is less concerned with sound than fury. Authors Michael Moynihan and Didrik Sederlind zero in on Norway, where a tiny clique of black metal musicians torched some churches in 1992. The church burners’ own place of worship was a small Oslo record store called Helvete (Hell). Helvete was run by the godfather of Norwegian black metal, 0ystein Aarseth (“Euronymous”, or “Prince of Death”), who first brought black metal to Norway with his group Mayhem and his Deathlike Silence record label. One early member of the movement, “Frost” from the band Satyricon, recalled his first visit to Helvete: I felt like this was the place I had always dreamed about being in. It was a kick in the back. The black painted walls, the bizarre fitted out with inverted crosses, weapons, candelabra etc. And then just the downright evil atmosphere...it was just perfect. Frost was also impressed at how talented Euronymous was in “bringing forth the evil in people – and bringing the right people together” and then dominating them. “With a scene ruled by the firm hand of Euronymous,” Frost reminisced, “one could not avoid a certain herd-mentality. There were strict codes for what was accept- ed.” Euronymous may have honed his dictatorial skills while a member of Red Ungdom (Red Youth), the youth wing of the Marxist/Leninist Communist Workers Party, a Stalinist/Maoist outfit that idolized Pol Pot. All who wanted to be part of black metal’s inner core “had to please the leader in one way or the other.” Yet to Frost, Euronymous’s control over the scene was precisely “what made it so special and obscure, creating a center of dark, evil energies and inspiration.” Lords of Chaos, however, is far less interested in Euronymous than in the man who killed him, Varg Vikemes from the one-man group Burzum.

ALIENATED JADED SCIENCE-FICTION AND HORROR FANS jumped out of their seats when, in 1979, HR Giger's amazing Alien crea- ture hit the silver screen. Thus began a stylistic era dominated by the Swiss artist's biome- chanical surrealism. Sleek and sexy, scary and sickening, the Alien is the most beloved of Giger's pantheon, which includes living walls of babies, deadly demons, and circuit-encrusted sirens. Hans Rudi (HR) Giger (b. 1940) came into this world as the Second World War began, in German-speaking Switzerland. His parents made love; the living machine in Where to begin discussing which he floated built him, nurtured him, put a computer in his head, gave him a ghost, and spit him out. “Not Just Boys’ Fun?” The Gendered Experience of American Hardcore Siri C. Brockmeier MA Thesis in American Studies Department of Literature, Area Studies and European Languages ILOS UNIVERSITETET I OSLO May 2009 Advisor: Rebecca Scherr 2 Abstract The goal of this thesis is to shed light on a part of the story of American hardcore, a part that in my view has not been given the space it deserves. Women in punk and hardcore do not own a place in the history of their subcultural communities. Their contributions to their scenes are deemphasized, if not ignored. Drawing from subcultural theory and Joan W. Scott’s view on using experience as evidence, I use song lyrics, images and interviews to contextualize women’s experiences of American hardcore. In this, I attempt to understand how and why some women are drawn to such a closed masculine community, and how they navigate this environment. Women in the scene have been mentioned in works on hardcore, but their experiences and the role of gender in the scene has not been fully studied. Before women can be incorporated into subcultural history, they must be taken seriously as active participants in their environment. This thesis is an attempt at beginning such a discussion. 3 Acknowledgements This thesis is ultimately a cultural production of hardcore. Without the influence and inspiration hardcore has given me throughout the years, my path might have been very different. To my informants for honest input and enthusiasm about the project, to Gry Holmern Halvorsen for constant support I could not do without and insightful discussion that ultimately led to this project, to Pernille Birkeland for scholarly teamwork, to Peter Sehlin for introducing me to hardcore in our youth, to Andreas Øverland, Anette Pedersen, Jon A.

RETURN TO FORM: ANALYZING THE ROLE OF MEDIA IN SELF-DOCUMENTING SUBCULTURES GLEN WOOD A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN CINEMA AND MEDIA STUDIES YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO August 2020 © Glen Wood, 2020 Abstract This dissertation examines self-documenting subcultures and the role of media within three case studies: hardcore punk, skateboarding, and urban dirt-bike riding. The production and distribution of subcultural media is largely governed by intracultural industries. Elite practitioners and media-makers are incentivized to document performances that are deemed essential to the preservation of the status quo. This constructed dependency reflects and reproduces an ethos of conformity that pervades both social interactions and subcultural representations. Within each self-documenting subculture, media is the primary mode of socialization and representation. The production of media and meaning is constrained by the presence of prescriptive formal conventions propagated by elite producers. These conditions, in part, result in the institutionalization of conformity. The three case studies illustrate the theoretical and methodological framework that classifies these formations under a new typology. Accordingly, this dissertation introduces an alternative approach to the study of subcultures. ii Acknowledgments My academic career is based upon the support of numerous individuals, organizations, and institutions. I would like to thank John McCullough for his inspiring words and utter confidence in my work. Moreover, Markus Reisenleitner and Steve Bailey were integral throughout the dissertation process, encouraging my progress and providing their thoughtful commentary along the way. I am also greatly appreciative of the external reviewers for their time and evaluations.

Acknowledgements First and foremost, I would like to thank my dissertation supervisor, Mark Smith. Even though we don’t necessarily work on the same kinds of topics, I’ve always appreciated his patient advice. I’m sure he’d be loath to use the word “wisdom,” but his open mind combined with ample, sometimes non-academic experience provided reassurances when they were needed most. Following closely on Mark’s heels is Karl Miller. Although not technically my supervisor, his generosity with his time and his always valuable (if sometimes painful) feedback during the dissertation writing process was absolutely essential to the development of the project, especially while Mark was abroad on a Fulbright.

  • How Much Art Can You Take?
HOW MUCH ART CAN YOU TAKE? I go to an art museum It’s more like a mausoleum — Really Red, “No Art In Houston” The term “Hardcore art” is an oxymoron. Hardcore types fancied themselves dismissive of all art. Theirs was an essentially undecorated, unadorned world. Yet the term will be useful herein. Hardcore communicated through low-tech graphics that read as art. Appropriated shards of advertising and photojournalism comprised stark stylistic hodge-podges announcing shows and records. The graphics, like the music, challenged brain-dead consumers, Reagan’s government, and multi- national corporations. WINSTON SMITH (artist): There was a drive to get away from fine, finished-looking work that looked like it came out of a record company art department. Instead of creating overblown work that makes the individual feel smaller, Hardcore made the individual feel included. It was not a glamour trip; the artwork was chaotic and spontaneous. Hardcore kids dismissed art as a bourgeois indulgence. Of course enough of it seeped into the mix to encourage an identifiable art style fusing collage, illustration and typography, almost always in black-and-white. A tribal iconography manifested itself in distinct record covers and gig flyers, with a politically incorrectness proclaiming, “This is hard-core.” GLENN DANZIG (The Misfits): It had a definite look and style — there’s an art to brutality. That’s why Example of Hardcore era art certain boxers are better than others — there’s an art. Flyer for Wasted Youth Reagan’s In album, 1981 Collection of the author Hardcore fans claimed to hate anything with “art school” pretense or pseudo-intellectualism, and felt “arty” types lacked intensity.

Arnett.41.2.4 (Do Not Delete) 2/7/2020 2:46 PM FROM DECARCERATION TO E-CARCERATION Chaz Arnett† Each year, millions of Americans experience criminal justice surveillance through electronic ankle monitors. These devices have fundamentally altered our understanding of incarceration, punishment, and the extent of the carceral state, as they are increasingly offered as moderate penal sanctions and viable solutions to the problem of mass incarceration. They purportedly enable decarceration, albeit with enhanced surveillance in the community as the compromise. Proponents of the devices tout the public safety and cost benefits while stressing the importance of depopulating prisons and returning individuals to their communities. In recent years, an oppositional movement has developed, focused on highlighting the social harms of electronic monitoring as part of a burgeoning e-carceration regime, where digital prisons arise, not as substitutes to brick and mortar buildings, but as net-widening correctional strategy operationalized to work in tandem. This Paper examines this debate on the effectiveness of electronic ankle monitors using a social marginalization framework. It argues that the current scholarly debate on the use of electronic ankle monitors is limited because it fails to consider the potential harm of social † Assistant Professor of Law, University of Pittsburgh School of Law.
