General Characteristics of the District Fazilka district is one of new and 22 districts in the state of Punjab in North-West Republic of India. It has 314 revenue villages. The district headquarters of Fazilka District is in Fazilka City, and Abohar is district's largest city. The head quarter of this district is the city of same name, that is Fazilka city. It was announced as the 21st district of Punjab in July 2011. Earlier, it was part of the Firozpur district. 1.1 Location & Geographical Area It has extreme climate, with the summers being very hot and the winters very cold. The River Sutlej runs through the district and moves over to the Pakistan side through the Indo-Pakistani border. Fazilka's origin dates back to 1844 CE. It was established by Mr. Vans Agnew and was christened after the original owner of the land, Mian Fazil Watoo. A payment of Rs 144 and annas eight was paid to his descendants in 1877 from panchayat fund and named the place after Mian Fazil Watoo (Lambardar)as FAZILKA. Being at the border, Fazilka also had to bear the brunt of India-Pakistan partition in 1947 and the two Indo-Pak wars of 1965 and 1971. After the death of Mr Agnew Mr Oliver of East India Company took over as station in charge. Much before 1800 AD, Guru Nanak Dev Ji paid his visit to Fazilka district during (1517-1521). His final longest journey (Udassi) lasted over four years towards west mainly Baghdad, Mecca and Medina. At present Gurdwara Bad Tirath Sahib at village Haripura is situated at that location. Gurdwara Bad Tirath Sahib located on the Abohar-Ganga Nagar road, three kilometers from Khuian Sarwar town. It is Seventeen kilometers from Abohar and about 26km from Fazilka district headquarter. The municipality was formed via Punjab Government notification no. 486, dated 10 December 1885. The town was added to the Ferozepur district in 1884. On 27 July 2011, Fazilka was declared a District by Government of Punjab vide their Gazette Notification No. 1/1/2011-RE- II(I)/14554 dated July 27, 2011 consisting three subdivisions Fazilka, Jalalabad and Abohar besides three sub-tehsils Arniwala Sheikh Suban, Sito Guno and Khuian Sarwar. As of 2001 India census, Fazilka had a population of 67,424. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Fazilka has an average literacy rate of 68%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 72%, and female literacy is 62%. In Fazilka, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age. In last assembly elections held in 2012, out of total 4 vidhan sabha seats in Fazilka, 2 MLAs belong to Shiromani Akali Dal, 1 from BJP and 1 from Congress party. Almost 11 km from the Hussaini wala border on the west and 121 km from Ludhiana in the east lies the City of Firozpur, the headquarters of the District administration. By road, it is 116 km from Amritsar, 130 km from Jalandhar, 122 km from Ludhiana, 103 km from Bathinda (via Kot Kapura), and 86 km from Fazilka. The city lies on the Firozpur Cantonment—Ludhiana Branch Line of the Northern Railway. 2 1.2 Topography Physiographically, the Fazilka District constitutes a part of the Punjab plain, which is largely flat and featureless and is formed of Pleistocene and Sub-recent alluvial deposits of the Indo-Gangetic system. Wind act has also played a part in shaping the life of the District, located as it is in the vicinity of the Rajasthan Desert. That is why the alluvial surface of the District is strewn with sand-dunes in some parts. The general elevation of the District ranges from 230 meters in the north-east to about 175 meters in the south-west, giving a north-east- to south-west gradient of one meter in 4 km. Though the physiography of the District is apparently a homogeneous plain, in general, it displays significant variations, if examined at local levels. The following three terrain units can be indentified: (i) The floodplain of the Satluj (ii) The sand-dune-infested tract (iii) The upland plain. 1.3 Availability of Minerals The area forms a part of Indo-Gangetic alluvium. It is practically flat except for occurrence of s mall scattered sa nd-dunes. The geological formations identified in the area are: sandy clay with saltpeter encrustations at places, clay with sporadic sandy nodules, coarse sand, a water-bearing sand horizon and impervious clay. The formations which have been encountered from a bore -hole drilled for oil, are the middle and upper Shiwaliks (between 195 and 700 metres). Except saltpeter, other mineral occurrences in the Firozpur District are rather rare. The seepage of natural gas and the occurrences of groundwater have also been reported from this area. Natural Gas --- The seepage of natural gas has been reported from Zira. The details of the seepage are not known. Saltpetre . ---Saltpeter is essentially y a nitrate of potassium a n d sodium, with minor amounts of chloride, sulphate and carbonate radicals. It occurs as a thin, white encrustation on the surface. The efflorescence appears during the hot months, viz. May and June and even during July in the absence of adequate rains. 3 1.4 Forest An area of 105 sq. km i s covered under reserved, protected, private and unclassified forests, which is 4.78% of the total area of the district and 0.21% of total area of Punjab. It shows that the dis trict is lack ing in forest resource. 1.5 Administrative set up: There are total 4 cities and towns in this district. A list of towns and cities is given below: 1. Fazilka (Municipal Council Class-1) 2. Abohar (Municipal Council Class-1) 3. Jalalabad (Municipal Council Class-2) 4. Arniwala Sheikh Subhan (Nagar Panchayat) 2. • Rating Rationale for JKCL
Rating Rationale Abohar Municipal Council May 24 2017 Brickwork Ratings assigns an Issuer rating to Abohar Municipal Council (Abohar MC) Particulars: Entity Rating Type Tenure Rating* BWR B+ Abohar Municipal Issuer Rating Long Term (Pronounced BWR B Plus) Council Outlook : Stable * Please refer to BWR website www.brickworkratings.com/ for definition of the ratings Abohar is a municipal council in the Fazilka District in the state of Punjab. It is close to the India-Pakistan international border. Abohar is an important agricultural hub with cotton and kinnow fruit being the main agro-products produced in the region. Rationale/Description of Key Rating Drivers/Rating Sensitivities: The rating draws comfort from the civic services standards maintained by the Municipal Council, higher literacy rate than the state’s average literacy rate, and progress made by Abohar Municipal Council in implementing key reforms. The rating also factors in the city’s contribution to the state’s GDP, city’s positioning as an important agricultural hub with cotton and kinnow fruit being the main agro-products, its status as an Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) city in Punjab and various other projects & initiatives taken by Abohar MC to augment the level of services in the city viz. solid waste collection with efficiency of over 85%, which is treated at solid waste treatment plant at Bhatinda. These rating strengths are offset by volatile revenue surplus position over the past four year, 2 out of 4 previous financial years being in revenue deficit with tax revenues contributing less than 10% in total revenues of Abohar MC, besides low collection efficiency of property tax with limited follow-up, no coverage of storm water drainage system, low level of metering of water connections, low coverage of water supply connections of only 58% and large investment requirements of the city to implement various projects & reforms.

Indeed it was disgusting to see the plight of maintenance of banana plantation due to lack of technical know-how. About 65% plants perished due to cold / frost. Small bunches are having incidence of various diseases like cigar end rot and other pest problems. 2. Kinnow cluster visited in Abohar and Fazilka areas demanding assistance for purchase of power sprayer under NHM. 3. Visit of Kinnow / guava orchards under area expansion programme in Abohar (Fazilka), Ludhiana and Fatehgarh- Sahib Districts provided better hope for production and productivity of fruits. 4. Plantation of intercrops need to be finalized for Kinnow in consultation with SAU’s /ICAR with more emphasis on vegetable / pulses and oil crops keeping in view the demand of farmers.

  • Physical Geography of the Punjab
19 Gosal: Physical Geography of Punjab Physical Geography of the Punjab G. S. Gosal Formerly Professor of Geography, Punjab University, Chandigarh ________________________________________________________________ Located in the northwestern part of the Indian sub-continent, the Punjab served as a bridge between the east, the middle east, and central Asia assigning it considerable regional importance. The region is enclosed between the Himalayas in the north and the Rajputana desert in the south, and its rich alluvial plain is composed of silt deposited by the rivers - Satluj, Beas, Ravi, Chanab and Jhelam. The paper provides a detailed description of Punjab’s physical landscape and its general climatic conditions which created its history and culture and made it the bread basket of the subcontinent. ________________________________________________________________ Introduction Herodotus, an ancient Greek scholar, who lived from 484 BCE to 425 BCE, was often referred to as the ‘father of history’, the ‘father of ethnography’, and a great scholar of geography of his time. Some 2500 years ago he made a classic statement: ‘All history should be studied geographically, and all geography historically’. In this statement Herodotus was essentially emphasizing the inseparability of time and space, and a close relationship between history and geography. After all, historical events do not take place in the air, their base is always the earth. For a proper understanding of history, therefore, the base, that is the earth, must be known closely. The physical earth and the man living on it in their full, multi-dimensional relationships constitute the reality of the earth. There is no doubt that human ingenuity, innovations, technological capabilities, and aspirations are very potent factors in shaping and reshaping places and regions, as also in giving rise to new events, but the physical environmental base has its own role to play.
