The Academia • September 2008 news HOMASIANS donated 50 packs of blood recently for Darwin Thomasians Donate Aguila, a lucky Wish Ko Lang recipient. This blood donation Tprogram was done through the auspices of the UST Health Service (USTHS) under Dr. Salve Olalia, GMA 7 Wish Ko Lang TV Blood for 9-year-old program, the Philippine National Red Cross, and the UST Red with Aplastic Anemia Cross Youth Council. The event is a personal initiative of movie and TV actor Robin Padilla, who knew about the patient with Aplastic Anemia through the program Wish Ko Lang. In this program, Darwin said he wanted to meet his favorite actor, Padilla. In turn, the actor recommended the idea of a “Blood Donation for Darwin” to the production staff after learning that constant blood transfusions were needed to prolong his life. Inasmuch as Darwin’s family cannot afford to financially sustain this blood transfusion program, UST was chosen to serve as the catalyst for this generous undertaking.

The Thomasian community positively responded, despite limitations in time, to the call for voluntary blood donation. Many potential donors were even disappointed for not being able to qualify to donate blood. RMS
