It might equally apply to an individual- to Eric Clapton, for example, The Beatles are the saints of the 1960s, and George Harrison an especially "heavy person". This year, heavy people flock together. Clapton and Steve Winwood join up in Blind Faith. Steve Marriott and Pete Frampton meet in Humble Pie. Crosby, Stills and Nash admit a new member, Neil Young. Supergroups, or more informal supersessions, serve as musical summit meetings for those who are reluctant to have theirwork tied down by the now antiquated notion of the "group". Trouble of one kind or another this year awaits the leading examples of this classic formation. Our cover stars The Rolling Stones this year part company with founder member Brian Jones. The Beatles, too, are changing - how, John Lennon wonders, can the group hope to contain three contributing writers? The Beatles diversification has become problematic.

Designed and built in-house by our staff of engineers, this robotic “Drum Machine,” called the Gluing Gantry, ensures that every Evans head has a true collar. A series of vacuum fixtures holds the film in place for each head while the robotic gluing arm circles above the hoop and dispenses epoxy. The result is a drumhead that tunes both easily and consistently. At Evans, we do it right the first time. And every time. And experience tells us that there are no shortcuts when it comes to making a stick. There is, however a very good short- cut when choosing one. The journey from wooden dowel to finished drumstick is a tough one. Each stick makes its way through the hands of several craftsmen before it leaves us. And at every test, there’s always the chance of getting turned into firewood. But it does get easier when our sticks reach the store. Because once you feel a pair in your hands, you’ll appreciate the time it spent in ours.

Lunar Notes - Zoot Horn Rollo's Captain Beefheart Experience PDF Author: Bill Harkleroad Pages: 128 pages ISBN: 9781908728340 Bill Harkleroad joined Captain Beefheart's Magic Band at a time when they were changing from a straight ahead blues band into something completely different. Through the vision of Don Van Vliet (Captain Beefheart) they created a new form of music which many at the time considered atonal and difficult, but which over the years has continued to exert a powerful influence. Beefheart re-christened Harkleroad as Zoot Horn Rollo, and they embarked on recording one of the classic rock albums of all time - Trout Mask Replica ¬- a work of unequalled daring and inventiveness. Further LPs like Lick My Decals Off Baby and Clear Spot highlighted what a truly innovative band they were, and what a dazzlingly original guitarist Harkleroad was becoming. Since Captain Beefheart's retirement from the music industry, many outside commentators have tried to put their finger on what was so special about The Magic Band of that time. Now for the first time we get the insider's story. Harkleroad reviews the often uncomfortable and difficult inner workings of the band, giving an unparalleled insight into the way the music was put together. At last, we find out what it was like to record, play and live with an eccentric genius such as Beefheart. This product may take a few minutes to download. Unconditionally Guaranteed proved to be the last album made with members of the Trout Mask era band — except John French who would play a huge part in the first unreleased Bat Chain Puller record and the later Doc At The Radar Station. Inevitably, all Beefheart fans should be exactly that. He originally played bass, but switched to rhythm guitar after former Little Feat bassist Roy Estrada joined the band. Don exploded! Don Vliet had quite a pocket full of creative things he was fond of. Oct 03, Bryan rated it liked it. Chris lives for the rock and can often be seen stumbling drunkenly on and off stages far and wide. Bill is a mysterious exception. • “Trout Mask Replica”--Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band (1969) Added to the National Registry: 2010 Essay by Josh Shepperd (Guest Post)*
“Trout Mask Replica”--Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band (1969) Added to the National Registry: 2010 Essay by Josh Shepperd (guest post)* Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band Depending on who you talk to, Captain Beefheart’s third released album, which entered the Library of Congress National Recording Registry in 2010, can simultaneously be described as the most widely heralded or the most difficult and enigmatic rock record of the 1960s. Matt Groening (“The Simpsons”) has deemed “Trout Mask Replica” to be the greatest album of all time. The BBC’s John Peel declared Captain Beefheart to be “rock’s true genius.” Influential rock critic Lester Bangs once wrote that “Trout Mask” wasn’t ahead of its time, it was “outside of time,” and that he listened to the record five times in a row on the first night. Upon initial listen, the album sounds chaotic, improvised, and to an impatient ear, almost mocking. Iconic British musician Fred Frith wrote that when he first encountered the music it was “alarming to hear people playing together and yet not in any recognizable rhythmic pattern.” But after a second, third, or in this writer’s case, 50th listen, the album stands out as a work of singular imagination and originality. Challenging, mystifying, funny, despairing, and moving, “Trout Mask” is a highly choreographed, sophisticated work of sound art. “Trout Mask” invokes movements in psychedelic, free jazz, and blues music, without ever fitting into one category. And a close listen reveals a rare dialogue between Magic Band instrumentalists that reflected an intense, intimate, closely quartered practice regimen that lasted for months.

Dave Hartl’s 2014 Top Ten (or so) Most Influential Albums Another year slips by and I’m still listening to a lot of music. But for the first time in many years I’m looking backwards. The best bumper sticker of the year? “It’s not that I’m old… your music really does suck.” What is new amongst this year’s offerings is still rooted in the past, deeply. But inspiration is to be found, nonetheless. As always, here’s the Top 10 musical things that influenced me the most this year. If you’d like to respond, write to [email protected] and your contribution will be added to this document online for future downloads. In this way, we all get turned on to great music and cut through the jungle of A&R crap and hype that still remains out there. Enjoy, I did! 1.) John Coltrane: Offering: Live at Temple University Back in 1966, Temple University Radio WRTI was on the edge of the black free jazz scene as well as everything else that was happening (as opposed to its current conservative stance on music). John Coltrane’s concert at Temple in November that year was taped by WRTI and has lain dormant, becoming the stuff of legend in its real absence. The teenage Michael Brecker who witnessed the event decided that night to become a tenor sax player, much to the world’s benefit. The reports of Coltrane beating on his chest and bellowing like a wounded animal gave credence to the viewpoint that the far-out explorations he undertook in the last 2 years of his life, driving his famous quartet out of the picture, were the symptoms of madness, pain, or possible LSD experimentation.
