Captain Beefr:eart Don van Vliet In het leven van Don van Vliet, alias Captain Beefheart; is het buitenge­ wone gewoon, en dat maakt het juist zo moeilijk om een ,consistent beeld van hem op te bouwen. Dat zal ik dan ook,niet,proberen.,U krijgt an mij -, . ..... Beefheart zoals hij is, met al het onverwachte en tegenstrijdige dat hij te pas en te onpas ten toon spreidt. Debeeidhouwer, schilder, dichter, schrijver, tekenaar, zan~r, componist en muzika~t die Don va~ Vliet mo­ menteel is, wer:d in 1941 in Glendale. Californië, geboren uit normaie middle class ouders. Zijn liefde voor de natuur geeft hij op 5-jarige leeftijd reeds gestalte inbeelden die hij begint te maken van planten en dieren. Volgens eigen zeggen heeft hij op dat moment al het besef dat de mens de .' ' natuur verwoest en de jonge van Vliet besluit dan ook oin zich niet in het maatschappelijk systeem in te laten kapselen maar zich te wijden aan het redden van de natuur. Spoedig krijgt het jonge talent de belangstelling van de gevestigde orde en gaat dan optreden in de TV-show van de kunste­ naar Rodriguez waar Don beelden maakt en Rodriguez toekijkt. Op 13-jarige leeftijd krijgt hij dan de mogelijkheid om zich met een beurs in Europa verder te gaan bekwamen. Ze proberen je in de geschiedenis bij te zetten, in een hokje bij andere beeldhouwers'. Wij schrijven dan , , .1964., de tijd dat wij hier op ,rudimentaire !lîtje8 van Beatles 'en Stones klaa~ zitten te komen" en Beefheart komt zo maat even aankakken met een ~how dje vandaag ,de dag nog in zou slaan als een bom. ' over ..het behaalde.. succes maakt de Captain maar me- .. ..', "," .. teeg een hele elpee, stapt er mee naar Jerry Moss maar deze weigert om het , , ,wat~riaal,uit te brengen. V?l~omen gedesillus~oneerd door zoveel onbegrip -401- ... ·en te':genwerking 'geeft, ·de. Captain er de brui. aan, en ontbindt zijn' M~;gic , ,Hand. ;A&M brengt 'nog eensïngle uit '.Frying Pán" maar dit maakinde hit- " charts' nietS. klaar' e'n' de muzikale rol van Beefheart lijkt uitgespeeld. Muziek-opvatting Deze eerste breuk in de carrièr~"YanCaptainBeefheart lijkt ,het juiste moment om terug te ke~en naar wat ~eSr p~rsoonlijke trekjes van Don van Vliet omdat deze sterk inwerken op zijn muzikale ideeën ~n het product dat de Captáiri uiteindelijk de wereld inslinge.rt. Zoals ik in het begin van mijn.verhaal al stelde is het ongewone gewoon in het leven van Beefheart. DeCaptain:woont tegenwoordig in een htiis in San Fernando Valley L.A. dat uitkijkt:'ap de oceaan. Hij leeft daar temid­ den>va.n b<;>men, planten, dieren en zijn biologische moestuin, kijkt over- dag wat naar' de lucht, of naar de:óceaan, rookt, wat hij eigenlijk niet zou moeten doen, schrijft boeken, verhalen of gedichten (hij denkt in ver­ zen!) of maákt muziek~ Zijn haast armoedige levensomstandigh~den de~lt hij met een prachtige vrouw, Jan, die hem af en toe wat voorle.est oJIl,da t h·i j zelf niet van lezen houdt. 'Ik hou van levende mensen, ik praat g~aag. Je hoeft het niet met elkaar eens te'zijn, maar je ~oet wel in- en uitademen.. ;Zappa ademt alleen in'. Magie en telepathie nemen eeh belangrijke plaats in in zijn leven.     Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart and the Secret History of Maximalism Michel Delville is a writer and musician living in Liège, Belgium. He is the author of several books including J.G. Ballard and The American Prose Poem, which won the 1998 SAMLA Studies Book Award. He teaches English and American literatures, as well as comparative literatures, at the University of Liège, where he directs the Interdisciplinary Center for Applied Poetics. He has been playing and composing music since the mid-eighties. His most recently formed rock-jazz band, the Wrong Object, plays the music of Frank Zappa and a few tunes of their own (http://www.wrongobject.be.tf). He rose to fame for playing the Man with No Name in Sergio Leone’s Dollars trilogy of spaghetti westerns (A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly) during the 1960s, and as San Francisco Police Department Inspector Harry Callahan in the Dirty Harry films (Dirty Harry, Magnum Force, The Enforcer, Sudden Impact and The Dead Pool) during the 1970s and 1980s. These roles, along with several others in which he plays tough-talking no-nonsense police officers, have made him an enduring cultural icon of masculinity. Eastwood won Academy Awards for Best Director and Producer of the Best Picture, as well as receiving nominations for Best Actor, for his work in the films Unforgiven (1992) and Million Dollar Baby (2004).     VOCI DALL'ALDILA’ VII - note introduttive CAPTAIN BEEFHEART Per anni una leggenda ha circondato i componenti della Magic Band che accompagna Captain Beefheart nel doppio LP Trout Mask Replica: che quei misteriosi Mascara Snake, Antennae Jimmy Semens, Zoot Horn Rollo e Rockette Morton (più un batterista così misterioso da non venir nemmeno nominato nei credits!) fossero poi diventati, una volta lasciato Beefheart, nientemeno che i Residents. Le date, a ben vedere, coincidevano: il Mascara Snake (un cugino di Beefheart) partecipò a quell'unico disco del ‘69, Antennae Jimmy Semens lasciò la band a fine 70, e Zoot Horn Rollo e Rockette Morton restarono fino al ‘74. Le prime registrazioni casalinghe dei futuri Residents risalgono al ’69 e il loro primo LP è proprio del ‘74. In realtà, tre di loro ricomparvero in dischi di altri gruppi, ma con i loro veri nomi: Antennae (Jeff Cotton) con i Mu, e Zoot e Rockette (Bill Harkleroad e Mark Boston) con i Mallard; e, soprattutto, la musica dei Residents poco aveva in comune con quella della Magic Band - ma qualcosa in effetti sì, nel suo apparire come un oggetto totalmente alieno dal contesto che lo circondava. Un suono, quello di Trout Mask infatti, che praticamente non ha avuto antecedenti né epigoni: per quanto legioni di musicisti, da Pere Ubu a Fred Frith a Fall, Birthday Party, Tom Waits, P.J. Harvey e Deerhoof abbiano pubblicamente espresso la loro ammirazione per Beefheart, e molti si siano spinti anche a inciderne delle cover (tra questi Henry Kaiser, Eugene Chadbourne, Jad Fair, XTC, Mercury Rev, Sonic Youth, White Stripes, The King of Luxembourg e gli Everything but the Girl!) "il suo marchio", notava il biografo Mike Barnes, "è rinvenibile solitamente solo in tracce superficiali nella musica dei suoi ammiratori.
