Captain Beefr:eart Don van Vliet In het leven van Don van Vliet, alias Captain Beefheart; is het buitenge­ wone gewoon, en dat maakt het juist zo moeilijk om een ,consistent beeld van hem op te bouwen. Dat zal ik dan ook,niet,proberen.,U krijgt an mij -, . ..... Beefheart zoals hij is, met al het onverwachte en tegenstrijdige dat hij te pas en te onpas ten toon spreidt. Debeeidhouwer, schilder, dichter, schrijver, tekenaar, zan~r, componist en muzika~t die Don va~ Vliet mo­ menteel is, wer:d in 1941 in Glendale. Californië, geboren uit normaie middle class ouders. Zijn liefde voor de natuur geeft hij op 5-jarige leeftijd reeds gestalte inbeelden die hij begint te maken van planten en dieren. Volgens eigen zeggen heeft hij op dat moment al het besef dat de mens de .' ' natuur verwoest en de jonge van Vliet besluit dan ook oin zich niet in het maatschappelijk systeem in te laten kapselen maar zich te wijden aan het redden van de natuur. Spoedig krijgt het jonge talent de belangstelling van de gevestigde orde en gaat dan optreden in de TV-show van de kunste­ naar Rodriguez waar Don beelden maakt en Rodriguez toekijkt. Op 13-jarige leeftijd krijgt hij dan de mogelijkheid om zich met een beurs in Europa verder te gaan bekwamen. Edoch, hier, komt de kink in de kabel, voor zijn " . muziek-adepten waarschijnlijk gel'ükkiá'," -want zi jn o.'llders besluiten dat het kunstenaarsmilieu toch niet erg positief op de j .nge Don zal inwerken en weigeren hun toestemming voor de Europa-reis. Kort daarna gaat de familie van Vliet verhuizen naar Lancaster waar Don naar de High-school gaat en daar 'another Lancastrian' - Zappa - ontmoet. Hij gaat dan mondharmonica -400- en saxofoon spelen, de twee instrumenten die Don tot op de dag van vandaag is' biiJven"'bespelen, lüistert 'intensie f 'naar avant-ga-rde jazz (Ornette "Go­ leman, John Coltrane, Cecile Taylor) :en"de MississippijDelta Blues (John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Son House) en zal later van deze omschakeling van de beeldende kunst naa~ de muziek zeggen:'Ik ben in de muziek gegaan omdat er in de beeldhouwkunst te veel geplozen wordt. Ze proberen je in de geschiedenis bij te zetten, in een hokje bij andere beeldhouwers'. '-N-a-'een' korte peri'ode als commercieel artiÈ3"E,t, en' als' manager' van een' aantal schoenenwinkels (hij bouwt deze snel:uit tot een waar schoenen­ imperium en trekt er midden in de kerst-drukte tussenuit) 'gaat hij zijn schoolvriend Fransiscus Zappa in Cucamonga opzoek~h~ verzinnen daar de naam Captain Beefheart voor Don, maken plannen voor een muziekgroep,:de"Soots' en voor een film die 'Captain Beefheart meets the Grmnt People' zou gaan heten, maar geen van deze plannen vinden doorgang omdat hun,i4eeën te ver • ... #... .. uit el~aar lopen. ,Zappa vertrekt dan naar Los Angeles en Don van Vliet gaat terug n~ar Lancaster., ~In Los Angeles aangekomen form~ert Zappa zijn ,'Motl:1er~', later 'Mothers of Invention' on~er druk van de pla.t'enmij, en '~eeft,met' ~ij~ 'freak-out' muziek een nieuwe im~uls, a~n de popmuziek)~ Terug in Lancaster formeert Beefheart, zijn groep van 'desert musicians' ~ie al snel 'een enor'm~, sensatie in C~lifornië zijn. Wij schrijven dan , , .1964., de tijd dat wij hier op ,rudimentaire !lîtje8 van Beatles 'en Stones klaa~ zitten te komen" en Beefheart komt zo maat even aankakken met een ~how dje vandaag ,de dag nog in zou slaan als een bom. De hele boel droeg zwarte pantjes-jassen en la~ge zwart-leren coates, hoge zwart-leren 'mus­ ketiers '.-laarzen, een van d~, gitaristen droen zo' n 'Dayan1-oogklepje en in 1964 hadden ze al lang haa~, echt lang haar (Dit moest Beefheart voor de. foto van zi jn e~rste elpee-hoes af :I;aten knippen). ,De muziek die, de ,Captain ,met zijn Magic Band maakte Was ongelofelijk maar hier kom ik wat late~ op terug. De platen maatschappijen stmnden zich . '. terverdring~n bij Beefheart,op de ,stoep en de 3elukkige die Beefheart wist te strikken was A&M (van Herp Alpert & Jerry Moss). Het eerste singletje '. -• I' dat uit wordt gebracht 'Piddy ~ah Diddy' (van B~ Diddley) wordt in Los Angeles en Californië meteen een:hit • .;' •.In I zijn enthousiasme. .' .. ' over ..het behaalde.. succes maakt de Captain maar me- .. ..', "," .. teeg een hele elpee, stapt er mee naar Jerry Moss maar deze weigert om het , , ,wat~riaal,uit te brengen. V?l~omen gedesillus~oneerd door zoveel onbegrip -401- ... ·en te':genwerking 'geeft, ·de. Captain er de brui. aan, en ontbindt zijn' M~;gic , ,Hand. ;A&M brengt 'nog eensïngle uit '.Frying Pán" maar dit maakinde hit- " charts' nietS. klaar' e'n' de muzikale rol van Beefheart lijkt uitgespeeld. Muziek-opvatting Deze eerste breuk in de carrièr~"YanCaptainBeefheart lijkt ,het juiste moment om terug te ke~en naar wat ~eSr p~rsoonlijke trekjes van Don van Vliet omdat deze sterk inwerken op zijn muzikale ideeën ~n het product dat de Captáiri uiteindelijk de wereld inslinge.rt. Zoals ik in het begin van mijn.verhaal al stelde is het ongewone gewoon in het leven van Beefheart. DeCaptain:woont tegenwoordig in een htiis in San Fernando Valley L.A. dat uitkijkt:'ap de oceaan. Hij leeft daar temid­ den>va.n b<;>men, planten, dieren en zijn biologische moestuin, kijkt over- dag wat naar' de lucht, of naar de:óceaan, rookt, wat hij eigenlijk niet zou moeten doen, schrijft boeken, verhalen of gedichten (hij denkt in ver­ zen!) of maákt muziek~ Zijn haast armoedige levensomstandigh~den de~lt hij met een prachtige vrouw, Jan, die hem af en toe wat voorle.est oJIl,da t h·i j zelf niet van lezen houdt. 'Ik hou van levende mensen, ik praat g~aag. Je hoeft het niet met elkaar eens te'zijn, maar je ~oet wel in- en uitademen.. ;Zappa ademt alleen in'. Magie en telepathie nemen eeh belangrijke plaats in in zijn leven. Toen Langdon Winner, redacteur, van 'Rolling Stone' eensipij Beefheart. op bezoek was liep de Captain plotseling,naar de'telefoon omdat er 'volgens, hem á>pgebeld werd. Zp;'zou hij eens een tournee door Nederland afgelast hebben'omda:t:'~.de, ma,a.~9tand niet goed was., In een interview heeft Beefheart al dit .soqrj; n9ns_~,Ils': van de hand 'gewezen, Bee fheart. wil niets meer en minder ~:r,:J. ~J:ch fi jn~ voe;J"en, muziek maken e.n hij vindt· het gewoon leuk om reacties var,.het pUbliek te krij.gen. Hij probeert helemaal niets te structureren, en is hele- '0 maal geen:pêrfectionist.     Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart and the Secret History of Maximalism Michel Delville is a writer and musician living in Liège, Belgium. He is the author of several books including J.G. Ballard and The American Prose Poem, which won the 1998 SAMLA Studies Book Award. He teaches English and American literatures, as well as comparative literatures, at the University of Liège, where he directs the Interdisciplinary Center for Applied Poetics. He has been playing and composing music since the mid-eighties. His most recently formed rock-jazz band, the Wrong Object, plays the music of Frank Zappa and a few tunes of their own (http://www.wrongobject.be.tf). Andrew Norris is a writer and musician resident in Brussels.     VOCI DALL'ALDILA’ VII - note introduttive CAPTAIN BEEFHEART Per anni una leggenda ha circondato i componenti della Magic Band che accompagna Captain Beefheart nel doppio LP Trout Mask Replica: che quei misteriosi Mascara Snake, Antennae Jimmy Semens, Zoot Horn Rollo e Rockette Morton (più un batterista così misterioso da non venir nemmeno nominato nei credits!) fossero poi diventati, una volta lasciato Beefheart, nientemeno che i Residents. Le date, a ben vedere, coincidevano: il Mascara Snake (un cugino di Beefheart) partecipò a quell'unico disco del ‘69, Antennae Jimmy Semens lasciò la band a fine 70, e Zoot Horn Rollo e Rockette Morton restarono fino al ‘74. Le prime registrazioni casalinghe dei futuri Residents risalgono al ’69 e il loro primo LP è proprio del ‘74. In realtà, tre di loro ricomparvero in dischi di altri gruppi, ma con i loro veri nomi: Antennae (Jeff Cotton) con i Mu, e Zoot e Rockette (Bill Harkleroad e Mark Boston) con i Mallard; e, soprattutto, la musica dei Residents poco aveva in comune con quella della Magic Band - ma qualcosa in effetti sì, nel suo apparire come un oggetto totalmente alieno dal contesto che lo circondava.
