Amboseli is best known for its unrivalled views of Kilimanjaro and the local population. There are over 1000 in the parks eco-system, featuring some of the largest in Africa. Tortilis Camp is named after the flat- topped, umbrella thorn tree, the Acacia Tortilis, and is situated in one of Amboseli's areas of Acacia Tortilis woodland, with the majestic backdrop of Africa's highest mountain, and the world’s highest free-standing mountain, snow- capped Kilimanjaro. Game drives, walks, sundowners and bush meals take place both inside the park, and within a private 30,000 acre game concession. The tents are all spacious, with king or twin beds and elegant en suite bathrooms. There is a main lounge, bar and dining area, all exquisitely built with natural materials and thatched roofs, with magnificent views of Kilimanjaro.

Tortilis Camp leases 30,000 acres from the local community, creating the “Kitirua Conservancy”. This way the local community benefits directly from tourism, and helps preserve an important part of the Amboseli eco-system. . Tortilis has contributed funds to build Esiteti Primary School, which opened in the beginning of 2011. We have recently put a great deal of funding into improving the facility and are fundraising to paint the entire school and build a teachers’ block. We offer clients the opportunity to get involved with projects at the school, including face to face donations, sports matches and pen pal correspondence for sponsored children. . The camp has rebuilt and maintains on a daily basis the elephant exclosure protecting the Olengaiya Spring, and thereby allowing the spring vegetation to regenerate and once again provide a home for a myriad of species. . As of January 2012, we will be donating US$ 10 per bed night to the Big Life Foundation, founded by the famous wildlife photographer Nick Brandt. Big Life is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of Amboseli’s ecosystem and the protection of wildlife from poaching. . Tortilis Camp pays a bednight fee and gives practical support to the Amboseli Tsavo Game Scout Association (ATGSA), which recruits and trains local Maasai men to become game scouts. Their goal is to ensure the continued safety and security of the flora and fauna of Amboseli and Tsavo and to educate local communities about wildlife/tourism benefits. .
