You will then be transferred by private vehicle to Movenpick Hotel located in the heart of Westlands, Nairobi's commercial, retail and entertainment suburb about 20 kilometers from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Depending on when you arrive, you may have time to explore the city and its attractions. Some of the most popular excursions include:- Visit to the Karen Blixen Museum (once home to the author of the evocative “Out of Africa” book). Giraffe Centre; which protects the highly endangered Rothschild's giraffe. David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust; an orphanage for young elephants. Other attraction of the park includes opportunities to meet the Maasai people and also offers spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world. Unique vegetation: About 550 different plant species including the unique and biggest euphorbia forest in Africa, Picturesque landscape and yellow acacia woodlands. 1830hrs return to lodge 1930hrs- Dinner and overnight stay at Lake Nakuru Sopa lodge; Standard rooms booked Meal plan: (Breakfast, lunch & Dinner) DAY 05 6TH MAY; LAKE NAKURU NATIONAL PARK – LAKE NAIVASHA 0630 hrs – final early morning game drive in the park 0830 hrs Return to lodge for breakfast. 1000 hrs Depart after breakfast for Lake Naivasha 1130 hrs Approximately, arrival at Lake Naivasha Country Club; check in and relax. 1230 hrs – enjoy a buffet mouthwatering lunch at the Club Afternoon spent at leisure. Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake in the Kenya section of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, and is located North West of Nairobi with the town of Naivasha on its north eastern shore. At 1,890 meters (6,200 ft) above sea level, the lake is at the highest point in the Kenyan rift, and is set in a complex geological combination of volcanic rocks and sedimentary deposits from a much larger Pleistocene era lake. Because the outlet for this ancient lake, now called Njorwa Gorge, is today much higher than the lake, the original Lake Naivasha must have indeed been a truly vast expanse of water. The gorge now forms the entrance to the Hell’s Gate National Park which, for obvious reasons, today contains some spectacular examples of water and weather-worn rock formations as well as an abundance of flora and fauna to include some extremely rare, resident breeding pairs of Lammergeyers, otherwise known as Bearded vultures. This time can be used doing a boat ride or a visit to Crescent Island – see rates below. On your way to Maasai Mara National Reserve, you will enjoy different array of views which are just priceless. 1240hrs approximately, arrive at Masai Mara National reserve; you will enjoy game drive enroute to Mara Sopa Lodge. You’ll have a sumptuous Lunch at the lodge. 1530hrs - Enjoy your first game drive in this amazing game reserve known for its wildlife. The Masai Mara is known as one of the finest wildlife destinations in the World. There is an excellent chance of seeing the Big 5, Cheetah, Serval cat, Hyena, Bat-eared foxes, Black-backed and Side-striped jackals, Hippo, Crocodile, Baboons, Warthog, Topi, Eland, Thompson’s gazelle, Grant’s gazelle, Impala, Waterbuck, Oribi antelope, Reedbuck antelope, and Common zebra. 1830hrs: Return to the lodge 1930hrs-dinner and overnight stay at Mara Sopa Lodge– standard rooms booked Meal plan: (Breakfast, lunch & Dinner) DAY 07 8TH MAY; ENJOY FULL DAY AT MAASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE 0630hrs: Wake up for a refreshing hot cup of coffee or tea.     Abstract The mountain bongo antelope Tragelaphus eurycerus isaaci has rapidly declined in recent decades, due to a combination of hunting, habitat degradation and disease. Endemic to Kenya, mountain bongo populations have shrunk to approximately 100 individuals now mainly confined to the Aberdares mountain ranges. Indirect observation of bongo signs (e.g. tracks, dung) can be misleading, thus methods to ensure reliable species identification, such as DNA-based techniques, are necessary to effectively study and monitor this species. We assessed bongo presence in four mountain habitats in Kenya (Mount Kenya National Park, Aberdare National Park, Eburu and Mau forests) and carried out a preliminary analysis of genetic variation by examining 466 bp of the first domain of the mtDNA control region using DNA extracted from faecal samples. Of the 201 dung samples collected in the field, 102 samples were molecularly identified as bongo, 97 as waterbuck, one as African buffalo and one as Aders’ duiker. Overall species-identification accuracy by experienced trackers was 64%, with very high error of commission when identifying bongo sign (37%), and high error of omission for waterbuck sign (82%), suggesting that the two species’ signs are easily confused. Despite high variation in the mtDNA control region in most antelope species, our results suggest low genetic variation in mountain bongo as only two haplotypes were detected in 102 samples analyzed. In contrast, the analysis of 63 waterbuck samples from the same sites revealed 21 haplotypes. Nevertheless, further examination using nuclear DNA markers (e.g. microsatellites) in a multi-locus approach is still required, especially because the use of mitochondrial DNA can result in population overestimation as distinct dung samples can potentially be originated from the same individual.

    Spring 13 Assessment of habitat and wildlife density in Community Wildlife Sanctuaries Amboseli Ecosystem, Kenya Claire Poelking Community wildlife sanctuaries within the Amboseli ecosystem serve as a wildlife corridor for migratory species from Amboseli National Park. The sanctuaries are community-based conservation areas that provide wildlife with necessary resources outside of Amboseli National Park and grant the local community managerial rights to the land and its resources. Data were collected in six sanctuaries located in Kimana Group Ranch. Foot counts were used to collect information on habitat types, vegetative health, and species presence within the sanctuaries. Each sanctuary was individually assessed upon habitat availability – measured by habitat proportion and vegetative health – based on a scoring system modified from Herlocker (1993). Wildlife density and habitat preference by wildlife were calculated using the Jacob’s Index. Additionally, seasonal and annual wildlife density variations were determined using similar data collected since 2010. Habitat heterogeneity proved to be the best predictor for wildlife presence in the sanctuaries, while habitat quality was less influential in observed wildlife presence. A one-way ANOVA revealed no significant difference in the annual variation of wildlife densities among the sanctuaries. The six community wildlife sanctuaries have been found to act effectively as a wildlife corridor for the species observed throughout the study. Department Geography Senior Honors Thesis University
