Let's Go on Safari Amboseli Kenya LET’S GO ON SAFARI AMBOSELI KENYA WITH MARINA CANO & MIKE FISHER April 2020 Amboseli National Park lies in the North West of Mt. Kilimanjaro, on the border with Tanzania, in Kenya. Crowned by Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, the Amboseli National Parks is one of Kenya's most popular parks. The name "Amboseli" comes from a Maasai word meaning "salty dust", and it is one of the best places in Africa to view large herds of elephants up close. Nature lovers can explore five different habitats here ranging from the dried-up bed of Lake Amboseli, wetlands with Sulphur springs, the savannah and woodlands. ITINERARY On arrival you will be transferred to your Hotel Tamarind tree or to Wilson airport or your flight to Amboseli. www.tamarindtree-hotels.com Your trip starts in Nairobi. After breakfast you will be transferred to Wilson Airport 10 minutes’ drive from tamarind tree Hotel, your vehicle will leave early with luggage by road to Amboseli. Your safari vehicle will be waiting for you at the airstrip on arrival, which is located inside the park, you will do game drive on your way to the camp. You will have unlimited game drives, every day will be open for discussion in order to achieve our target. All meals included in the package, you will also have enough water all through, and there will be a cooler box/fridge which will keep water cold all day long. The camp’s food is international standard. Amboseli National Park lies in the North West of Mt. Kilimanjaro, on the border with Tanzania. The park covers 392 km² and forms part of the much larger 3,000 km² Amboseli eco-system. Large concentrations of wildlife inhabit this arid savannah, making Amboseli a popular tourist destination. The salted lake of Amboseli, most of the time dry, is a large area of dusty desert. Once you crossed this arid dry- lake bed, beautiful green swamps, hidden nature's treasures irrigated by ground water coming from the largest single mountain of the world, Mt Kilimanjaro, offer an amazing ecosystem, a reminder of paradise and freshness. The main attraction is the view of elephants grazing in front of the majestic mountain – usually only visible early in the morning or late afternoon. The park was established in 1974 and covers an area of 392 km square. It forms part of the Amboseli eco- system covering an area of 3000km Square. It is located on the border with Tanzania and Kajiado district, in southern Kenya. The park is home to the Maasai community whose culture and values are an attraction in itself, however this has been punctuated by adversity such as the reallocation of the park's land by the Kenya Wildlife Services. Most lodges are situated in the center swamp Ol Tukai and one public campsite is located at the South border of the park near the Observatory Hill. TORTILIS CAMP Amboseli is approximately 200km from Nairobi and the usual route is via Namanga. The road is tarmacked up until Namanga from where the ride becomes rough. The other road is via e-mail on the Nairobi- Mombasa road. The park has a single airstrip for light aircraft with Air Kenya providing daily flights. The park can be accessed via five gates, Kelunyiet, Iremito, Imeshanan, Kitirua & Airstrip. Amboseli is famous for its big game and its great scenic beauty – and the landscape is dominated by the towering Mount Kilimanjaro. Amboseli National park is generally not a large park but there is plenty to see. The animal selection is vastly diverse. Elephants are a majority, the largest number in all Kenyan parks. The openness of the park has enabled predators such as the cheetahs and hyenas to roam around. Other animals include hippos found in the swamps, wildebeest, antelopes, zebras, giraffes, buffalos, and birds of all sorts. ITINERARY Day accommodation activity Day 1. • 10 Interesting Facts About Mount Kilimanjaro
10 Interesting Facts About Mount Kilimanjaro 1) Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa, making it one of the seven summits. It very popular with both experienced hikers and first time adventurers because it is considered to be the easiest of the seven summits. Scaling the mountain requires no technical skills or equipment, such as rope, harness, crampons or ice axe. It is a hiking peak, not mountaineering. 2) Kilimanjaro is not only Africa’s tallest peak, but also the world’s tallest free standing mountain. The summit, named Uhuru Point, is 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) above sea level. While most high mountains are part of ranges, such as Mount Everest’s Himalayan Mountain Range, free standing mountains like Kilimanjaro are usually a result of volcanic activity. 3) Kilimanjaro lies just 205 miles from the equator, in the country of Tanzania. The equator is an imaginary line that divides the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere. When early explorers reported seeing glaciers on the top of Kilimanjaro, people did not believe them as they thought it was impossible for ice to form so close to the hot, equatorial sun. Scientists now believe that the glaciers shrink and then regrow during the planet’s ice ages. 4) The origin of the name Kilimanjaro is not certain. The most popular answer is that the name comes from the Swahili word “Kilima” (mountain) and the Chagga word “Njaro” (whiteness). Another possibility is that Kilimanjaro is the European pronunciation of a KiChagga phrase meaning “we failed to climb it.” 5) Now approximately 30,000 people climb Kilimanjaro every year.

  • Assessment of Habitat and Wildlife Density in Wildlife Sanctuaries
Spring 13 Assessment of habitat and wildlife density in Community Wildlife Sanctuaries Amboseli Ecosystem, Kenya Claire Poelking Community wildlife sanctuaries within the Amboseli ecosystem serve as a wildlife corridor for migratory species from Amboseli National Park. The sanctuaries are community-based conservation areas that provide wildlife with necessary resources outside of Amboseli National Park and grant the local community managerial rights to the land and its resources. Data were collected in six sanctuaries located in Kimana Group Ranch. Foot counts were used to collect information on habitat types, vegetative health, and species presence within the sanctuaries. Each sanctuary was individually assessed upon habitat availability – measured by habitat proportion and vegetative health – based on a scoring system modified from Herlocker (1993). Wildlife density and habitat preference by wildlife were calculated using the Jacob’s Index. Additionally, seasonal and annual wildlife density variations were determined using similar data collected since 2010. Habitat heterogeneity proved to be the best predictor for wildlife presence in the sanctuaries, while habitat quality was less influential in observed wildlife presence. A one-way ANOVA revealed no significant difference in the annual variation of wildlife densities among the sanctuaries. The six community wildlife sanctuaries have been found to act effectively as a wildlife corridor for the species observed throughout the study. Department Geography Senior Honors Thesis University
