Chapter 18 New Jews in Amsterdam: Some Social Aspects Reflected in the Thesouro dos Dinim by Menasseh ben Israel Aliza Moreno-Goldschmidt The main goal of the present study is to analyze selected excerpts from Menasseh ben Israel’s Thesouro dos Dinim in order to extract his personal ap- proach regarding former conversos who joined the Amsterdam Jewish com- munity, as well as those who remained in the Lands of Idolatry.1 In order to understand the relevant background, the paper will include a brief description of the genre, that is to say, the halakhic manuals in Spanish and Portuguese published during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It will also present a concise account of the changes in the halakhic status of the former conversos until the time of Menasseh ben Israel. Menasseh ben Israel, one of seventeenth-century Jewish Amsterdam’s most prominent figures, has also been one of its most studied. However, his halakhic work Thesouro dos Dinim, considered by some to be one of his least original or innovative writings, has aroused little interest. Modern scholars share this dis- interest, but it also afflicted Menasseh ben Israel’s contemporary colleagues. As Asa Kasher demonstrated, in contrast to the reputation that Menasseh ben Israel gained among non-Jewish intellectuals (who were obviously uninter- ested in his Jewish legal writings), his reputation as a legal scholar among the rabbinical leaders of his time was hardly outstanding.2 Nevertheless, whatever his rabbinical colleagues may have thought, the actual impact of Menasseh’s work within the Jewish world—as a writer and communal religious leader— was significant especially among the New Christians who returned to Judaism in Amsterdam and elsewhere in the Western Sephardic diaspora. -

Chapter 7 Defining Deviance, Negotiating Norms: Raphael Meldola in Livorno, Pisa, and Bayonne Bernard Dov Cooperman* 1 The Secularization Thesis The link between modernization and secularization has long been a staple of Jewish historiography. Secularization was the necessary prerequisite for, and the inevitable response to, Jews’ “emancipation” from discriminatory legal provisions. It was evidenced in the abandonment of Jewish ritual observance, an intentional imitation of external norms that was either to be praised as “enlightenment” or decried as “assimilation,” and the abandonment of Jewish “authenticity.” The decline in observance was accompanied by, or justified by, a parallel abandonment of traditional religious beliefs and theological concepts. And at the same time, the kehilla, the autonomous Jewish community, lost its ability to enforce religious discipline and suppress unacceptable religious ideas.1 Thus the transition to modernity was equated with a decline in rabbini- cal and communal authority, the abandonment of traditional behaviors, and the collapse of orthodox mentalities. In a famous article published almost a century ago, the young historian Salo Baron questioned whether moderniza- tion had been worth such a great cultural and communal cost.2 But he did not question the narrative itself; if anything, his regret over what was lost rein- forced the assumption that modernization and secularization were one. * My thanks to Professors Gérard Nahon and Peter Nahon as well as to Doctor Nimrod Gaatone for their thoughtful comments on this paper. Works in Progress Group in Modern Jewish Studies Session Many of us in the field of modern Jewish studies have felt the need for an active working group interested in discussing our various projects, papers, and books, particularly as we develop into more mature scholars. Even more, we want to engage other committed scholars and respond to their new projects, concerns, and methodological approaches to the study of modern Jews and Judaism, broadly construed in terms of period and place. To this end, since 2001, we have convened a “Works in Progress Group in Modern Jewish Studies” that meets yearly in connection with the Association for Jewish Studies Annual Conference on the Saturday night preceding the conference. The purpose of this group is to gather interested scholars together and review works in progress authored by members of the group and distributed and read prior to the AJS meeting. 2006 will be the sixth year of a formal meeting within which we have exchanged ideas and shared our work with peers in a casual, constructive environment. This Works in Progress Group is open to all scholars working in any discipline within the field of modern Jewish studies. We are a diverse group of scholars committed to engaging others and their works in order to further our own projects, those of our colleagues, and the critical growth of modern Jewish studies. His appearance is sponsored by Hillel at Alfred.Dr. Netanyahu's appearance on the AU campus offers people a choice of speakers with disparate viewpoints on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Russell Lecture,, scheduled for 8 p.m. Wednesday in Holmes Auditorium, Harder Hall, will feature Dr. Norman G. Finkelstein, a Fulbright senior specialist and a professor of political science at DePaul University. The title of his lecture is "The Origins of the Israeli/Palestinian Conflict." Dr. Iddo Netanyahu, a physician and author who now makes his home in upstate New York, will assess the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the wake of the second Iraq war, and will also field questions from the audience.A member of one of Israel's most prominent families, Dr. Netanyahu's father, Benzion Netanyahu, is a highly-regarded historian and author. His older brother, Jonathan, was killed in 1976 leading an elite Israeli commando unit that rescued more them 100 Air France passengers held by plane highjackers at Entebbe airport in Uganda. Dr. Netanyahu, who later became a member of the same commando unit, wrote a book about the Entebbe rescue mission. Jewish Studies/Middle Eastern Studies M144, Winter 2020 Zionism: Ideology and Practice in the Making of a Jewish State Scott Abramson [email protected] Summary: This course tells the biography of Zionism. Uniting social, intellectual, cultural, and political history, it exhibits its subject in panoramic view, presenting Zionism as a national sentiment, a political movement, a state-building enterprise, and a multifocal program for the renaissance of a people, a land, and a language. Comprehensive in chronology as well as in scope, the course traces the progress of Zionism through its entire career: from its first stirrings in the nineteenth century, amid great changes in Europe and the Jewish world, to its fulfillment in 1948, when the state of Israel was proclaimed. Our concentration throughout, as reflected in the course title, is shared between the study of Zionism in conception and in application. For the former, primary sources direct our inquiry, bringing us into unmediated contact with the texts of Zionism’s most influential theoreticians. From there we follow Zionism’s passage from the minds of its conceptualizers into the hands of its implementers, analyzing Zionism as it was enacted on the ground and profiling the prime movers behind its advance. The sum of these many separate inquiries into Zionism is a thorough exposition of the historical forces, personalities, events, and contingencies that combined to convert Jewish nationalism into a Jewish nation-state. It provides a close look at Israeli society, in which people face daily conflicts. These include confrontations on many levels: the national, such as wars and terror attacks; the social, such as ethnic, religious and economic tensions; and the personal level, whereby the number of lawyers and legal claims per capita are among the highest in the world. The magnitude, pervasiveness, and often existential nature of these conflicts have led sociologists to label Israel a ‘conflict society’. -
