General Rules of the Game

1. Handball combines the elements of soccer and . Five players (one goalie included) try to score by throwing the ball past an opposing goalie. The game emphasizes passing, movement, creativity, and footwork.

2. A jump-ball will decide the start of the game and first possession.

3. Players may dribble the ball for an unlimited amount of time, but must be heading in a direction to do so.

4. If the player is not dribbling, they can only hold the ball for three seconds.

A. All basketball dribbling rules apply (traveling, allowed two steps, etc…)

5. Goals off the bounce on throws are good.

6. Teams cannot throw inside the designated goalie crease.

A. Determined and made clear to competing teams prior to game depending on playing surface.

B. No player on the offense is allowed inside of the goalie crease.

7. Goalies MUST administer a throw-in after a goal is scored.

8. Throw-ins are awarded after all fouls (except shooting fouls).

9. A goal cannot be scored from a throw-in.

Fouls , Infractions, and Penalties

1. Players who throw at another player intentionally will be ejected from the game, the league, and see further expulsion from NYU intramurals.

2. Players cannot pull, hit, or punch the ball out of an opponent’s hands.

3. Kicking the ball is prohibited.

4. You cannot block a throw from behind. If done, you will either receive a yellow card warning, or a red card ejection from the game.

5. Defensive fouls, penalties, and infractions will be called very similar to basketball rules. Pushing, hitting, tripping, holding, blocking, charging are all infractions. So are offensive fouls (e.g. push offs, hand slaps, and any aggressive motion to gain an offensive advantage).

6. If a team is stalling (no attempts to score or shoot), at the ’s discretion, the ball will be awarded to the opposing team.

7. Players fouled in the act of shooting (referee’s discretion) will be awarded a penalty throw.

8. Keepers may exit the goal area with possession of the ball, but the goalkeeper becomes subject to the rules of players in the playing area.

9. Goal keepers have five seconds to release the ball or a turnover will be awarded.

10. Yellow cards will be issued for excessive fouls throughout a game by an offending player. Officials will warn the participant prior to the yellow card being given.

A. Participants who receive a yellow card will also be suspended for the next scheduled game.

11. Red Cards (or second yellow card following suspension) will be an immediate ejection and possible removal from the league.

Timing and Regulations

1. Game will consist of two 15-minute running time halves. Halftime will be three minutes in length.

2. The clock will stop in the last two minutes of the second half ONLY during goals, fouls, infractions, and injuries.

3. During overtime, the clock will only stop during the last minute of the session for goals, fouls and infractions.

4. Overtime will be three minutes and only takes place in the playoffs under “Golden goal” rules (first goal wins). After two overtimes, the game will be determined by penalty throws.

5. Teams are allowed one timeout per half and one time out during overtime.

Team Rules and Responsibilities

1. Teams must start or finish (due to injury or ejection) with three players minimum. Four players are ideal to play (including the goalie).

2. Any team without the minimum three players on the designated playing court of the scheduled start time, and has exceeded the 5 minute grace period, will the contest to a score of 11-0.

A. Any team that completely no shows a contest (no present participant at game time) will be removed from the league immediately.

3. ONLY the team captain may consult with the or supervisor when the ball is NOT in play.

4. Substitutions can only be made during timeouts, after fouls and/or violations, or if the ball goes out of bounds. If this is not followed, a technical will be called and a penalty throw will be awarded.

5. Any team using an ineligible player will forfeit all remaining games on the schedule and will be removed from the league.

6. No player may play for more than one team.

A. Teams and players are susceptible to being barred from the league and/or playoffs that violate this rule.

Equipment

1. Proper athletic attire as outlined in the NYU Intramural Handbook is required – only non-marking sneakers, shorts or sweatpants must be worn to participate.

2. Required pinnies will be provided and must be worn if teams are not in distinct colors.

Sportsmanship

1. ALL players are expected to display sportsmanlike conduct in compliance with the NYU Intramurals Handbook.

ALL UMPIRE DECISIONS ARE FINAL

The NYU Intramural Department reserves the right to override any of these rules should the situation call for it.
