David Janssen and Edward Whitelock. 2009. Apocalypse Jukebox: The End of the World in American Popular Music. Berkeley: Soft Skull Press/Counterpoint LLC. Reviewed by David Gutkin While any attempt to characterize a nation and "a people" is bound to expire in dubious generalization, claims about the essence of the United States and constitution of the "American character" have often been marked by especially outlandish and totalizing rhetoric-by American and non-American writers alike, both affirmatively and critically. j One example is Jean Baudrillard's 1986 book America. Poised as the postmodern successor to Alexis de Tocqueville, Baudrillard, perceiving American culture simultaneously as pre-civilized (an old trope) and as the paradigm of hypermodern simulacral "spectrality," characterizes the nation as both "the only remaining primitive society" and as "a giant hologram."2 If representations of the United States from the last half-century are inflected by the post-World War II phase of American exceptionalism, this has affected not only imperial apologists and vulgar nationalists but even, residually, writers on the left, like Baudrillard. More generally, the United States has always been a strongly symbolic nation, whether imagined as the singular beacon of democracy or as the paradoxical no-place/no-face oflate capitalism. For this reason, critical studies of the American mythos are important, and, as Greil Marcus realized some decades ago, popular music serves as a good lens through which to view the agglomerated fragments of"America."3 Clearly indebted to Marcus, David Janssen and Edward Whitelock, profes sors of English at Gordon College and authors of Apocalypse Jukebox: The End of the World in American Popular Music, take as their entry point into the American imagination a perceived deep relationship between rock and apocalyptic thought.

Student work appearing in The Haverford Journal is selected by the Editorial Board, which puts out a call for papers at the end of every spring semester. Entries are judged on the basis of academic merit, clarity of writing, persuasiveness, and other factors that contribute to the quality of a given work. All student papers submitted to the Journal are numbered and classified by a third party and then distributed to the Board, which judges the papers without knowing the names or class years of the papers’ authors.

Art Terrorism in Ohio: Cleveland Punk, The Mimeograph Revolution, Devo, Zines, Artists’ Periodicals, and Concrete Poetry, 1964-2011. The Catalog for the Inaugural Exhibition at Division Leap Gallery. Part 1: Cleveland Punk [Nos. 1-22] Part 2: Devo, Evolution, & The Mimeograph Revolution [Nos. 23-33] Part 3: Zines, Artists’ Periodicals, The Mimeograph Revolution & Poetry [Nos.34-100] This catalog and exhibition arose out two convictions; that the Cleveland Punk movement in the 70’s is one of the most important and overlooked art movements of the late 20th century, and that it is fruitful to consider it in context of its relationship with several other equally marginalized contemporary postwar Ohio art movements in print; The Mimeograph Revolution, the zine movement, concrete poetry, and mail art. Though some pioneering music criticism, notably the work of Heylin and Savage, has placed Cleveland as being of central importance to the proto-punk narrative, it remains largely marginalized as an art movement. This may be because of geographical bias; Cleveland is a long way from New York or London. This is despite the fact that the bands involved were heavily influenced by previous art movements, especially the electric eels, who, informed by Viennese Aktionism, Albert Ayler, and theories of anti- music, were engaged in a savage form of performance art which they termed “Art Terrorism” which had no parallel at the time (and still doesn’t). It is tempting to imagine what response the electric eels might have had in downtown New York in the early 70’s, being far more provocative than their distant contemporaries Suicide.

It's funny how 25 years later you actually see a band perform for the first time and you realize that they had their fingers on the pulse. These guys really got into synthesizers for the most part. Now I will admit that the DVD isn't of the best quality but it captures the band in its http://www.rocknetwebzine.com/dvd%20reviews/1980.html 2/13/2006 Page 2 of 2 raw form and you realize just how good these guys really were. One thing I liked about the DVD was that the cameras were focused on the band the whole time. That's rare. What's also cool about this DVD is that there is an audio CD on the flip side so you can just listen to the tunes if you like.

Beginning in 1990, Tool have become highly influential for several music movements, produced multi-platinum selling records topping the charts in several countries, and won three Grammy Awards, yet due to their intense and multi- layered music, they have remained an alternative act; A Perfect Circle met with similar response. Unlike most of music bands, Tool are a democratic group in the sense that no “spokesman” for the band exists and A Perfect Circle was started by its guitarist Billy Howerdell; however, Keenan’s lyrics are important, for they provide a context for the music. He approaches many issues in his songs, such as personal feelings, manipulation, social criticism, hypocrisy, religion or censorship.
