World War I Veteran ~ Suffragist On the cover Eva Mae Lord in her World War I Army Nurse’s Uniform “… a resident of Forge Village practically all her life. A registered nurse by profession…a veteran of World War I, Miss Lord served in France with the United State Army, during that conflict.” – Lowell Sun, June 24, 1960 August 28, 1920 was the first voter registration held in Westford following the passage of the 19th Amendment allowing women to vote. Connell, Sr. December 14, 1928 - May 1, 2020 Joe Connell was a lifelong resident of Westford, growing up on First Street in Graniteville. In 1952, two years after returning from his service with the U.S. Marine Corps in Korea, Joe was appointed the town’s Superintendent of Streets. Six years later, Joe moved to the Westford Police Department to become one of two permanent patrolmen. In joining the Police Department, Joe was following in the footsteps of his father, John L. Connell, who had been appointed the town’s only police officer in 1935 and was serving as Sergeant on the police force in 1958 when his son joined the department. In 1963, Joe Connell was named Chief of Police, a position he held until his retirement in the fall of 1994. Report of the Moderator James R. Repetti It was quite a year! I postponed the 2020 Annual Town Meeting, originally scheduled for May 4, three times due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. A truncated meeting was finally held outdoors on June 29 at 11 a.m. on the Regional School football field. We considered and voted only upon articles that the Board of Selectmen had determined as being essential to the ongoing operation of the Town. The meeting was adjourned at 11:19 a.m., moments before a major thunderstorm occurred. Many citizens and friends of Dover helped plan and implement the meeting in a manner designed to reduce the risk for attendees. We are very grateful to Dr. Kevin Ban, a resident of Dover, Dr. John Brownstein, an epidemiologist at Harvard Medical School, and the Board of Health for their advice in helping us structure the meeting to minimize the health risk for all attendees. Town Clerk Felicia Hoffman coordinated and implemented their advice in an exemplary manner to ensure safe social distancing for all attendees and those working at the meeting. In addition, Assistant Moderator David Haviland, Police Chief Peter McGowan, and all the con- stables, checkers, counters, pages, registrars, and police officers provided invaluable service in assuring the safety of all attendees.

Reviewed by David Gutkin While any attempt to characterize a nation and "a people" is bound to expire in dubious generalization, claims about the essence of the United States and constitution of the "American character" have often been marked by especially outlandish and totalizing rhetoric-by American and non-American writers alike, both affirmatively and critically. j One example is Jean Baudrillard's 1986 book America. Poised as the postmodern successor to Alexis de Tocqueville, Baudrillard, perceiving American culture simultaneously as pre-civilized (an old trope) and as the paradigm of hypermodern simulacral "spectrality," characterizes the nation as both "the only remaining primitive society" and as "a giant hologram."2 If representations of the United States from the last half-century are inflected by the post-World War II phase of American exceptionalism, this has affected not only imperial apologists and vulgar nationalists but even, residually, writers on the left, like Baudrillard. More generally, the United States has always been a strongly symbolic nation, whether imagined as the singular beacon of democracy or as the paradoxical no-place/no-face oflate capitalism. For this reason, critical studies of the American mythos are important, and, as Greil Marcus realized some decades ago, popular music serves as a good lens through which to view the agglomerated fragments of"America."3 Clearly indebted to Marcus, David Janssen and Edward Whitelock, profes­ sors of English at Gordon College and authors of Apocalypse Jukebox: The End of the World in American Popular Music, take as their entry point into the American imagination a perceived deep relationship between rock and apocalyptic thought.

    Official Election Notice County of DARE 2020 PRIMARY Election Date: 03/03/2020 This is an official notice of an election to be conducted in DARE County on 03/03/2020. This notice contains a list of all of the ballot measures and federal, State, and local offices this county expects, as of this date, to be on the ballot on the date of the election. (See Attachment) An Election Notice will be prepared not later than 100 days before a regularly scheduled election that permits absentee voting, and as soon as practicable in the case of an election or vacancy election not regularly scheduled.
