Pensé que era demasiado pronto. Que los suti- les lazos que pudieran unir a todos los grupos y músicos que él pensaba incluir, eran muy difíciles de determinar. Que, prácticamente, había que “descubrir” muchas de las cosas que eran necesarias. Ahora, me encuentro frente a una especie de ensayo enciclopédico casi exhaustivo; adivino al autor haciendo de arqueólogo, de científico, de filósofo y de futurólogo. Y leo el original con asombro… ¡Lo ha conseguido!. Muchos de los puntos tratados eran para mí, auténticos eslabones perdidos, minas del rey Salomón aún por descubrir. Catedrales ente- rradas. Tablas cuneiformes que la música actual guardaba celosamente. Quizás el valor de este libro no llegue a apreciarse hasta dentro de unos años, y quizás entonces, sea necesario revisar y corregir muchas cosas. Pero realmente te encuentras ante el primer trabajo sobre el tema. El que su redacción se haya llevado a cabo en 1984 es, para mí, altamente significativo; pienso que si ahora ve la luz, con la inmediatez necesaria, años adelante será obra de consulta. Muchas veces pensé que las relaciones que mantenemos con la música, como simples aficionados, son el equivalente de las que mantenemos entre nosotros mismos. También pienso así de los músicos y su actitud. El concepto de música “free” que creó Europa, incorporado de la indu- dable revolución que se dio en la música negra, pretendía dirigirse justa- mente ahí, al cambio de actitudes en las relaciones del ser humano con la música. Después todos vimos claramente que la utopía de “Música Total”, música instantánea que surgiera de la improvisación creando nuevas 10 sensaciones, era imposible, porque en realidad, todo lo que hacemos pro- viene de nuestra memoria. No podemos inventar nada, sólo re-ordenar, combinar, transformar. Cualquier sentido político que se pudiera dar a la música, descalificaba a ésta misma de su verdadera categoría de música… Por eso, cualquier transformación que pudiera producirse, debía venir de la música. Estamos acostumbrados a no ver lo que tenemos delante de nuestras narices y esperar, ingenuamente, que lo nuevo será desco- nocido. Olvidamos muy frecuentemente, que en la sociedad que vivi- mos, lo nuevo deja de serlo con tanta rapidez que no solemos ni aperci- birnos de su aparición. Hay una sobrecarga de información. Vivimos en la sociedad de la información. Son las cosas que produce esta sociedad, antes de que nosotros mismos podamos separarlas del contexto, las que nos liarán cambiar a nosotros mismos y a la propia sociedad. No podría ser de otra manera. Los puntos básicos que este libro recalca a lo largo de entrevistas, procesos históricos y análisis técnicos de la música que se está haciendo ahora mismo, todos van a parar al mismo sitio. Se destila una idea gene- ral, bella y esperanzada; la técnica está creada por nosotros y de ella nos debemos servir. Los nuevos sonidos crean nuevas actitudes frente a la vida, pero nuestras emociones humanas son las mismas, y debemos trabajarlas igualmente que si hubiéramos nacido en cualquier época. Yo no me había dado cuenta nunca de que cuando apareció el violín Stradivarius, aque- llo era alta tecnología para la época, como ahora lo es un sintetizador… A través de la lectura de este libro podrás descubrir cosas de la histo- ria occidental de este siglo, cosas que estaban demasiado cerca como para que nadie se atreviera a olvidarlas. Bien, ahora están ahí, sobre el tapete de este libro. Quién podrá atreverse a decir que una caja de ritmos o un sintetizador son cosas inhumanas y frías, después de saber lo que pasaba en 1910. Quién seguirá imaginando un futuro lleno de robots, sin dar una mirada a su alrededor y descubrir que la nevera, el tostador de pan, el mando a distancia del televisor, la trituradora de frutas, son robots que nos ayudan en nuestra vida cotidiana. Prolongaciones de nuestro cuerpo y de nuestro cerebro. Terminales… Un estudio norteamericano (ellos son muy aficionados a hacer serios estudios sobre cosas evidentes) revela que en el futuro, la sociedad 11 americana se dividirá en pobres en información y ricos en información. Yo he notado, tras leer este libro, cómo algunas cosas que permanecían para mí en el mundo de lo que no sabes si has soñado, se convertían en ideas fundadas que me daban una nueva visión del mundo. A través de cosas tan simples como el tecno pop o el tecno funky, de la música para bailar que el hombre moderno produce para su propia diversión. Y, por último, a todos aquellos que están en la música, haciéndola e inventándola: este es un libro muy útil, donde se pueden saber muchas cosas nuevas sobre los sintetizadores y otros materiales de un grupo de hoy. Espero que lo aprecies como yo lo he apreciado. JESÚS QUEDLEJANO 12 INTRODUCCIÓN “Coincidiendo con la entrada de la era de Acuario, un nuevo estilo de música electrónica está naciendo; los sin- tetizadores han asimilado perfectamente la armonía y el ritmo. Compositores, productores e intérpretes están desa- rrollando una gran actividad en este campo para comu- nicar, a través de este sonido, su arte”. Nos ha parecido bien reproducir aquí este texto de una hoja discográ- fica promocional, para abordar el delicado y moderno tema de la música tecno. Varias son las razones y es el mismo texto el que nos las suministra. Vayamos, pues, por partes, y analicemos dicho texto utilizándolo como hilo conductor de esta introducción: “Coincidiendo con la entrada de la era de Acuario…” Bien vale hablar un poco de esto ya que esta colección de libros cuenta con la colabora- ción de un astrólogo, y él ha sido quién nos ha dado estos datos funda- mentales al alcance de cualquier persona y no exentos de actualidad: Todos sabemos que los signos zodiacales comienzan en Aries y acaban en Piscis; pues bien, en el orden inverso se suceden las Eras, de manera que encontrándonos en la Era de Piscis como todo el mundo ha podido comprobar durante los últimos 2000 años, la que ahora se acerca, es la de Acuario. No existe una fecha concreta para el cambio de Era porque los calendarios de más de dos mil años no tienen días de 24 horas; pero si hacemos caso de lo que tantos autores de best-seller nos vienen insi- nuando (Nostradamus, Orwell, Huxley, Torres Villarroel, las compañías discográficas y la portera de mi casa), la que se nos viene encima es la 13 Era de Acuario y los grandes adelantos científicos y técnicos están dis- puestos a corroborarlo, desde la retransmisión de la llegada a la Luna por televisión hasta los ordenadores de bolsillo, capaces de traducir del sáns- crito al arameo mientras interpretan una deliciosa melodía campestre. La música no ha podido quedarse atrás en esta carrera hacia lo nuevo y seguramente deseado, es decir: que todo sea más cómodo, que todo sea más bonito, que todo sea más rápido… y se ha visto enriquecida por los adelantos técnicos que detallamos a continuación y que encontramos referidos en el texto promocional que nos sirve de hilo conductor de esta introducción.

The purpose of this component is for students to develop their listening and appraising skills through the study of music across a variety of styles and genres. The content is grouped into six areas of study, containing either two or three set works. This component gives students the opportunity to reflect on, analyse and evaluate music in aural and/or written form. To achieve this objective, students need to use their knowledge and understanding of musical elements, context and language to make critical judgements about the repertoire and context of music within the areas of study. Students should also study a range of pieces beyond these set works. The suggested other musical pieces for each area of study (see Appendix 4 of the specification) provide students with breadth, enabling them to place their knowledge of musical elements, context and language in a wider context, and apply their knowledge and understanding to more pieces of music. The suggested other music can help students to relate their learning to music in the set works, but their study is not compulsory. Teachers can identify and teach other pieces of music to support their students’ learning. The following music and musicians are examples of how each of the areas of study can be approached from a diverse range of other perspectives. The pieces have been chosen to encourage students to think beyond the mainstream and over-represented composers and styles of music, and instead to consider alternative and less well-known types and origins of music.

His concerts are distinguished by virtuosic improvisations on the uncharted range of the tenor saxophone, processed through a quadrophonic delay system which allows him to form his own quintet. He has also performed and recorded with Steve Reich and Musicians, the Philip Glass Ensemble, Talking Heads, and Laurie Anderson, while presenting more than two hundred solo concerts throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. Richard Landry's concert for tenor saxophone will be held in BAM's Carey Playhouse on Saturday, November 10, at 8:00pm. Tickets are $15.00 .
