Tunnel Of Life 21. Devo Corporate Anthem I remember these guys back from my childhood. People thought they were pretty dorky and I guess I did too. It's funny how 25 years later you actually see a band perform for the first time and you realize that they had their fingers on the pulse. These guys really got into synthesizers for the most part. Now I will admit that the DVD isn't of the best quality but it captures the band in its http://www.rocknetwebzine.com/dvd%20reviews/1980.html 2/13/2006 Page 2 of 2 raw form and you realize just how good these guys really were. One thing I liked about the DVD was that the cameras were focused on the band the whole time. That's rare. What's also cool about this DVD is that there is an audio CD on the flip side so you can just listen to the tunes if you like. These guys were totally at the top of their game and I think Devo fans will really enjoy this CD/DVD immensely. Hit Songs Deconstructed Deconstructing Today's Hits for Songwriting Success http://reports.hitsongsdeconstructed.com Penn's Pick: Devo - Gut Feeling NYC 1977 France 1978 Band: Devo Song Gut Feeling Writers: Mothersbaugh, Casale Year Released: 1978 Genre: New Wave/Punk/Garage Why it’s a “Penn’s Pick”: February 17th brought some sad news in the world of Devo, with the announcement that founding member Bob Casale had passed away from heart failure. Casale, along with his brother Gerald, Alan Myers and brothers Mark and Bob Mothersbaughs formed the band back in 1972, eventually going on to become one of the most eccentric, unique and popular bands to emerge from the late 70?s / early 80?s Post Punk / New Wave scene. Songs like Whip It, Mongoloid, and their bizarre reworking of the Stone’s (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction showcased a style that was (and still is) all their own, enabling the band to carve out its own unique niche in the history of popular music. In honor of Bob Casale who played both guitar and keyboard for the band, we’re going to feature 2 performances of my personal favorite Devo song (which I also think is one of their best), Gut Feeling. Besides being a totally infectious New Wave/Punk/Garage song that’s right up there with the best of them, it also possesses a unique nature which enabled it to stand out amongst its contemporaries, including a 3 minute intro which builds into an incendiary climax (talk about breaking the rules!), as well as an opening line that reads , “something about the way you taste makes me wanna clear my throat.” You know you’re in store for something completely left of center when you hear that! The 2 performances that we’re featuring include the alleged live debut of the song back in 1977 (this one has the 3 minute intro that I was talking about), as well as a stellar performance of the song in France, 1978.

Back On Target: Devo Live in 1980 Page 1 of 6 BACK ON TARGET: DEVO LIVE IN 1980 By Hollis James Video artist Joe Rees founded Target Video in 1978 to capture what he correctly saw as an “alternative musical movement” that was steadily overtaking album-oriented rock. From punk royalty such as the Ramones and Talking Heads to sadly unrecorded “might-have-beens” like the Dils and the Screamers, Target began documenting every cutting-edge band playing clubs, bars, parties, Joe’s art studio (known simply as “Target,”) and even venues that defy logic—such as the Cramps’ 1979 show at Napa State Mental Hospital. In the pre-MTV years, the good people from Target captured sublime historical documents of now-indisputable musical legends. Even a cursory glance at Target’s recorded roster is intimidating, boasting Iggy Pop, Bad Brains, Minor Threat, the Cramps, Dead Kennedys, the Stranglers and even GG Allin. Unfortunately, once Target disappeared, many of us could only track down these gems as tenth-generation bootlegs. Luckily the digital age has been kind to the once VHS-only company. No longer the ROIR of the home-video market, Target—with the help of Music Video Distributors—has put care and (finally!) money into preserving its library of rare video-concert footage on DVD. The Target closet is full of worthy candidates for analog-to-digital transfers, hopefully with retooled sound that at least approaches today’s standards. But of all the important acts whose Target concerts are slowly emerging in DVD form, only Devo combines the visual punch equal to—and at times superceding—its sonic gifts.
