SLummiN’ Classics on the cheap 8 TONE A U D I O NO.30 184 J u l y 2 0 1 0 9 hile summer usually brings thoughts of frosty- cold adult beverages and yummy treats grilled to perfection, it also means music festivals! Photogra- Wpher David Thai spent some time at the Sasquatch festival right here in the Pacific Northwest and Music Editor Bob Gendron met me in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to cover Tom Petty and Jeff Beck at Milwaukee’s Summerfest. There was so much music that evening, we couldn’t fit it all in! Bob caught the Petty show on the main stage while I was absorbing Jeff Beck on the Harley Davidson stage, with Public Enemy and 311 both performing elsewhere at the same time. If your travels take you near the Midwest next summer, I highly suggest spending a few days at Summer- fest. The music is great and the food outstanding, not to mention the beer. Remember, that’s what made Milwaukee famous. We also have coverage via simulcast of the Big 4 Sonisphere Festival in Bulgaria. This was the first time these four bands have ever appeared live on the same stage, and photographer Mark Latham was there to cover it. Mark gave Bob Gendron a look at what it’s like to get up close and personal with the metalheads on both sides of the stage. So much for the metalheads. We have plenty of great gear for the gearheads as well: the first in-depth U.S. review of the PS Audio Perfect Wave DAC/Transport combo and the first major review of the new Magnepan 1.7 speakers, to name a few. Keeping the festival ball rolling, Bob and I will head to New York for the ATP (All Tomorrow’s Parties) Festival to cover Iggy Pop, Sonic Youth, Dungen and many more. So stay tuned. The reclusive new wave band usually doesn't tour much as original founder Mark Mothersbaugh has since moved on to creating commercials and soundtracks at his Los Angeles production company Mutato Muzika (that fantastically weird space-ship-looking building on Sunset Boulevard) along with the other Devo members save Jerry Casale who has been directing videos for such bands as the Foo Fighters and Soundgarden. However, this summer Devo got together and played limited dates all across the country--and this fall they released Live 1980, a full-length concert video shot at the Phoenix Theatre in Petaluma, CA on August 17, 1980. Complete with white uniforms, blue background screen and "energy domes" (don't you dare call them flower-pot hats), Devo play the hits off of their albums, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We are Devo!, Duty Now For the Future and Freedom of Choice. Twenty-one songs are featured in this 75-minute disc including the classic MTV staple "Whip It", the oft-covered "Girl U Want", and their own covers of Johnny River's classic "Secret Agent Man" and the Rolling Stones "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction".

    View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Glasgow School of Art: RADAR 'I Spy': Mike Leigh in the Age of Britpop (A Critical Memoir) David Sweeney During the Britpop era of the 1990s, the name of Mike Leigh was invoked regularly both by musicians and the journalists who wrote about them. To compare a band or a record to Mike Leigh was to use a form of cultural shorthand that established a shared aesthetic between musician and filmmaker. Often this aesthetic similarity went undiscussed beyond a vague acknowledgement that both parties were interested in 'real life' rather than the escapist fantasies usually associated with popular entertainment. This focus on 'real life' involved exposing the ugly truth of British existence concealed behind drawing room curtains and beneath prim good manners, its 'secrets and lies' as Leigh would later title one of his films. I know this because I was there. Here's how I remember it all: Jarvis Cocker and Abigail's Party To achieve this exposure, both Leigh and the Britpop bands he influenced used a form of 'real world' observation that some critics found intrusive to the extent of voyeurism, particularly when their gaze was directed, as it so often was, at the working class. Jarvis Cocker, lead singer and lyricist of the band Pulp -exemplars, along with Suede and Blur, of Leigh-esque Britpop - described the band's biggest hit, and one of the definitive Britpop songs, 'Common People', as dealing with "a certain voyeurism on the part of the middle classes, a certain romanticism of working class culture and a desire to slum it a bit".

    Sara Kays is like the one friend you have who actually listens and watches as much as she speaks. For the most part, her life is “quiet.” Her free time consists of hanging out with her brother and mother, playing soccer with her friends, and frequenting thrift shops. She loves warm beanies and also doesn’t understand “why people don’t eat croutons like chips.” When she does get “loud,” everybody else listens just as intently. She’s unassumingly built a rapt audience of 2 million followers across social media platforms, gathered hundreds of millions of streams, and received acclaim from Billboard, People, BuzzFeed, American Songwriter, Flaunt, FLOOD and more. Observations, thoughts, and truths straight from the Notes app on her phone inform diary-style stories often upheld by not much more than gentle acoustic guitar, soft ukulele, and a keyboard murmur. In 2021, the Nashville-based solo singer and songwriter makes a heart-to-heart connection on her Struck By Lightning EP [Atlantic Records] and more music on the horizon. “I was pretty surprised when people connected to the personal things I’ve gone through,” she admits. “I started seeing messages, and it made me more aware. It’s comforting to share in the same struggles.” After getting her first guitar at the age of twelve, she cut her teeth by busking for hours on end throughout high school. She performed staples such as “Champagne Supernova” by Oasis and Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling In Love With You.” Personally, she drew on influences as diverse as A Day To Remember, Mayday Parade, Panic! At The Disco, Alec Benjamin, Jake Bugg, and Kacey Musgraves.

    THE CLASH AND MASS MEDIA MESSAGES FROM THE ONLY BAND THAT MATTERS Sean Xavier Ahern A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2012 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Kristen Rudisill © 2012 Sean Xavier Ahern All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This thesis analyzes the music of the British punk rock band The Clash through the use of media imagery in popular music in an effort to inform listeners of contemporary news items. I propose to look at the punk rock band The Clash not solely as a first wave English punk rock band but rather as a “news-giving” group as presented during their interview on the Tom Snyder show in 1981. I argue that the band’s use of communication metaphors and imagery in their songs and album art helped to communicate with their audience in a way that their contemporaries were unable to. Broken down into four chapters, I look at each of the major releases by the band in chronological order as they progressed from a London punk band to a globally known popular rock act.
