Beitr. 28/1 177-195 20.8.1996 The Spanish Ichneumoninae of the Forschungsinstitut and Naturmuseum Senckenberg in Frankfurt (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae) J. SELFA Abstract: 66 (sub)species of Spanish Ichneumoninae kept in the Forschungsinsti- tut and Naturmuseum Senckenberg of Frankfurt (Germany) are named. Coelichneumon ferreus (GRAVENHORST 1829), Diphyus luctalorius (LINNAEUS 1758), Ichneumon dilleri HEINRICH 1980a, and Ichneumon fitlvicornis GRAVENHORST 1829, are new records in Spain. Introduction The Ichneumonidae collection of the Forschungsinstitut and Naturmuseum Sencken- berg in Frankfurt (Germany) is ordered following the check list of the DALLA TORRE'S Catalogue (1901-1902) and it is actually well preserved. The Spanish Ichneumoninae are mainly included into the Habermehl's and Weis's collections. HABERMEHL (1917, 1927) listed species, principally from the Northern part of Spain, constituting the more important material of this study. The species of the Weis's collection are legit of Schmiedeknecht, and were not shown on SCHMIEDEKNECHT'S works concerning to the Spanish fauna of Ichneumoninae (1902, 1914, 1928-1930). The related (sub)species are 66 distributed into 5 tribes and 28 genera. Four species (*) are recorded for the first time in Spain: Coelichneumon ferreus (GRAVENHORST 1829), Diphyus luctatorius (LINNAEUS 1758), Ichneumon dilleri HEINRICH 1980a, and Ichneumon fulvicornis GRAVENHORST 1829. The species are listed in alphabetical order for the genera under tribal names. Each species has reference to: 1) the original combination; 2) the original label data, indicating parenthetical some removed data; 3) the distribution in the Palearctic region and 4) the related species. © Biologiezentrum Linz/Austria; download unter www.biologiezentrum.at 178 Results Tribe Ichneumonini Amblyteles arntatorius (FORSTER 1771) Ichneumon armalorius FORSTER 1771: 82, d. ELIZABETH LOCKARD SKILLEN Diversity of Parasitic Hymenoptera (Ichneumonidae: Campopleginae and Ichneumoninae) in Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Eastern North American Forests (Under the direction of JOHN PICKERING) I examined species richness and composition of Campopleginae and Ichneumoninae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) parasitoids in cut and uncut forests and before and after fire in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee (GSMNP). I also compared alpha and beta diversity along a latitudinal gradient in Eastern North America with sites in Ontario, Maryland, Georgia, and Florida. Between 1997- 2000, I ran insect Malaise traps at 6 sites in two habitats in GSMNP. Sites include 2 old-growth mesic coves (Porters Creek and Ramsay Cascades), 2 second-growth mesic coves (Meigs Post Prong and Fish Camp Prong) and 2 xeric ridges (Lynn Hollow East and West) in GSMNP. I identified 307 species (9,716 individuals): 165 campoplegine species (3,273 individuals) and a minimum of 142 ichneumonine species (6,443 individuals) from 6 sites in GSMNP. The results show the importance of habitat differences when examining ichneumonid species richness at landscape scales. I report higher richness for both subfamilies combined in the xeric ridge sites (Lynn Hollow West (114) and Lynn Hollow East (112)) than previously reported peaks at mid-latitudes, in Maryland (103), and lower than Maryland for the two cove sites (Porters Creek, 90 and Ramsay Cascades, 88). These subfamilies appear to have largely recovered 70+ years after clear-cutting, yet Campopleginae may be more susceptible to logging disturbance. Campopleginae had higher species richness in old-growth coves and a 66% overlap in species composition between previously cut and uncut coves.

GENERAL NOTES JOllrnal of the Lepidopterists' Society 50(1), 1996, 87-89 FENNEL (FOENICULUM VULGARE) , PRIMARY HOST PLANT FOR THE EASTERN BLACK SWALLOWTAIL (PAPlLIO POLYXENES ASTERIUS) (PAPILIONlDAE) ON THE EASTERN SHORE OF VIRGINIA Additional key words: life history, parasitoids, secondary plant chemicals, The eastern black swallowtail, Papilin polyxenes asteril1s Stoll, is a common butte rfly that occupies a wide variety of habitats such as fields, gardens, wastelands, and marshes. Its geographic range extends from Quebec west to Colorado and south to the mountains of northern South America (Opler & Malikul 1992). It is one of several species of the machaon-complex whose larvae feed primmily on plants in the subfamily Apioideae (Api aceae = Umbelliferae) (Berenbaum 1981a). Hosts of the black swallowtail include many plants in the family Apiaceae and a few plants in Rutaceae and Asteraceae (= Compositae) (Munroe 1960, Wiklund 1975, Ber enbaum 1978, Scott 1986, Scribe r & Finke 1978). Queen Anne's lace or wild carrot, Daucus carota (L), is a common umbellifer on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. It grows along roadsides, in fallow fields, and in waste places throughout the eastern United States. Queen Anne's lace often has been reported as the primary host plant of the eastern black swallowtail (Scriber & Finke 1978, Blau & Feeny 1983). Fennel, Foeniculum vulgare Miller, is a perennial plant in the Apiaceae. It has decom pound leaves and filiform segments, with compound umbels of small yellow flowers; it blooms from June to September depending upon weather conditions. Fennel is known to be a host plant for the Old World swallowtail, Papilio machaon L, and the anise swallow tail, Papilio zelicaon Lucas (Berenbaum 1981h, Wiklund 1975, Scott 1986).

  • Arthropods of Elm Fork Preserve
Arthropods of Elm Fork Preserve Arthropods are characterized by having jointed limbs and exoskeletons. They include a diverse assortment of creatures: Insects, spiders, crustaceans (crayfish, crabs, pill bugs), centipedes and millipedes among others. Column Headings Scientific Name: The phenomenal diversity of arthropods, creates numerous difficulties in the determination of species. Positive identification is often achieved only by specialists using obscure monographs to ‘key out’ a species by examining microscopic differences in anatomy. For our purposes in this survey of the fauna, classification at a lower level of resolution still yields valuable information. For instance, knowing that ant lions belong to the Family, Myrmeleontidae, allows us to quickly look them up on the Internet and be confident we are not being fooled by a common name that may also apply to some other, unrelated something. With the Family name firmly in hand, we may explore the natural history of ant lions without needing to know exactly which species we are viewing. In some instances identification is only readily available at an even higher ranking such as Class. Millipedes are in the Class Diplopoda. There are many Orders (O) of millipedes and they are not easily differentiated so this entry is best left at the rank of Class. A great deal of taxonomic reorganization has been occurring lately with advances in DNA analysis pointing out underlying connections and differences that were previously unrealized. For this reason, all other rankings aside from Family, Genus and Species have been omitted from the interior of the tables since many of these ranks are in a state of flux.

Wimbledon and Putney Commons ECOLOGICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING REPORT 2020 BILL BUDD It is with great sadness that we must report the death of Bull Budd in autumn 2020. Bill was our much respected, dragonfly and damselfly recorder and a member of the Wildlife and Conservation Forum. As well as recording on the Commons, Bill also worked as a volunteer at the London Natural History Museum for many years and was the Surrey Vice County Dragonfly Recorder. Bill supported our BioBlitz activities and, with others from the Forum, led dedicated walks raising public awareness of the dragonfly and damselfly populations on the Commons. In September 2020 in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the recording and conservation of Odonata, a newly identified dragonfly species found in the Bornean rainforest* was named Megalogomphus buddi. His contributions will be very much missed. * For further information see: https://british-dragonflies.org.uk/dragonfly-named-after-bds-county-dragonfly-recorder-bill-budd/ Dow, R.A. and Price, B.W. • Review of the Status of Papilio Hospiton Guenée, 1839 in the Periodic Review of Species Included in the Cites Appendices Resolution Conf
REVIEW OF THE STATUS OF PAPILIO HOSPITON GUENÉE, 1839 IN THE PERIODIC REVIEW OF SPECIES INCLUDED IN THE CITES APPENDICES RESOLUTION CONF. 11.1 (REV. COP15) AND RESOLUTION CONF. 14.8 INTRODUCTION At its 25th meeting (Geneva, 2011), the Animals Committee selected Papilio hospiton for review under the Periodic Review of Appendices taking place between CoP15 (2010) and CoP17 (2016) (AC25 Doc. 15.6; AC26 Doc.13.3). The CITES Secretariat issued Notification to the Parties No. 2011/038 (Periodic review of species included in the CITES Appendices), inviting range States of the taxa concerned to comment within 90 days (by 20th of December 2011) on the selection and to put forward offers to review the species. The EU offered to undertake the review for this species, which was conducted by France and Italy, in collaboration with UNEP-WCMC. The Animals Committee endorsed this proposal by postal procedure after AC26 as part of the Periodic Review of the Appendices (Resolution Conf. 14.8). This species is a European endemic, occurring on the islands of Corsica (France) and Sardinia (Italy). PROPOSAL To transfer Papilio hospiton from CITES Appendix I to CITES Appendix II, in accordance with provisions of Resolution Conf. 9.24 (Rev. CoP15), Annex 4 precautionary measure A1 and A2a/b. The species does not meet the biological criteria for listing in Appendix I, laid out in Resolution Conf. 9.24 (Rev. CoP15) in Annex 1. The population size is estimated to be >10 000 adults hence does not meet criterion A; the area of distribution is considered relatively large (estimated at >20 000 km2) and thus the species does not meet criterion B and the population is thought to be stable or increasing and so does not meet criterion C.

A list of the described fossil Ichneu- monidae is proposed. KEYWORDS Insecta. Hymenoptera. Ichneumonidae. n. gen., n. sp. Eocene amber. France. List of fossil species. INTRODUCTION Nevertheless, the present fossil record suggests that the family was already very diverse during the Eocene and Fossil ichneumonid wasps are not rare.
