›Great men‹, ›Decline‹ and Empire: Safavid Studies and a Way forward? Andrew J. Newman* This paper first suggests that the paradigms utilised in the study of the Safavid period in Iran (1501-1722) in the West prior to the 1979-80 Iranian Revolution have since been given a new lease on life by scholars in the field, perhaps coincidentally with the distinctly ›Islamic‹ turn quickly taken by that revolution. Now, as prior to the Revolution, ›great men‹ and ›decline‹ are the organising principle(s) of discussions in Safavid studies. These paradigms dominate the field today, even as both the number of scholars active in the study of the period and the num- ber of the field’s sub disciplines have markedly increased in the years since the Revolution. It will then be argued that the more recent recourse to ›empire‹ as an organising principle for discussing the period has, in fact, only reinforced recourse to the above paradigms. As a result the field’s discourse generally heightens a sense of overall Safavid ›exceptionalism‹, as if the period represented a major break with the dynamics of the periods in Iranian history that both preceded and followed. A more dynamic understanding of empire, however, and finally, suggests that the period less marked a radical break either with Iran’s pre-1501 history or with its more recent past and even the present than is conventionally suggested. Keywords: Iran; Islam; Safavids; empire; Shi`ism; ›decline‹ theory; Middle East; ›great man‹ theory; Iranian Revolution. The conventional wisdoms: ›great man‹ and ›decline‹ Standing between the Indian subcontinent, Asia and the Middle East of the Eastern Medi- terranean, Iran’s political, socio-economic and cultural dynamic has historically interacted with those of these other areas, in the process mediating and transforming traditions and institutions received from and transmitted to each. -

However, it is clear that the mode and extent of this effect depends on the natural state of this or that area. On the other hand, Iran’s historical events and circumstances appear to have been less studied geographically. The present study examines the probable impact of the natural phenomena of the Kerman province, their prominent and diverse natural and human characteristics on the sources of the Iakhanan period. For this purpose, it uses the historical and geograph- ical reports of the 7th and 8th centuries. The above findings are important in this regard, demonstrating the history of economic developments in Kerman and other parts of Iran should not affect only in light of human events. -

The aim of Tsarist Russia according to Peter the Great’s willing was to reach the warm waters and to achieve this goal they needed to cross Iran. By the invasion of Russia to Caucasus territories of Iran, a long and devastating war began between Iran and Russia which lasted ten years. Russo-Iranian wars and treaties of Golestan and Turkmanchay are accounted as miserable and dark and blurred pages of Iran’s history. These wars that occurred in the time of Fath Ali Shah Qajar the incompetent king of Iran had nothing consequently but unhappiness and destruction for Iran. Loss of fertile and populous territories like South Caucasus, Georgia and Armenia, however, was irreparable in terms of economic and territorial, but was tolerable compared to other provisions of Convention of Turkmanchay such as territorial restriction of Iran and dispossession of Iran in the Caspian Sea and establishment of consular jurisdiction about Russian nationals which brought a severe damage to Iran’s political and economic independence. -

The Institute’s programmes encourage a perspective which is not confined to the religious heritage of Islam, but seeks to explore the relationship of religious ideas to broader dimensions of society and culture. The programmes thus encourage an interdisciplinary approach to Islamic history and thought. Particular attention is given to the issues of modernity that arise as Muslims seek to relate their heritage to the contemporary situation. -
