During the last redistricting cycle, Assembly Democrats chose to draw only 21 districts in Long Island instead of 22, overpopulating each Long Island district by +3.66%. Due to population growth, these 21 existing Long Island Assembly districts are now overpopulated by an even greater+4.42%.Drawing 21 districts in Long Island instead of 22 is a clear political gerrymander to avoid an additional likely Republican seat. - If the appropriate 22 Long Island Assembly districts are drawn, the populations of the districts in Long Island would be very close to the statewide average, deviating by less than half a percent. o The CC Reform Plan draws 22 Assembly districts in Long Island and adds the additional seat in the Great Neck area of Nassau, shifting the other North Shore districts (16-Schimel-D, and 13-Lavine-D) to the east. There was no other infallible recourse for the Church and many views and different doctrines were introduced. The lack of careful exegesis and agreed upon method of biblical interpretation resulted in a freedom to interpret the revelation in a way that made sense to the interpreter, in stead of coming to the conviction of what the original author and Holy Spirit meant at the time of writing the inspired text. It became more important what it meant to the interpreter, or worse, the text was twisted to prove doctrines not taught in the text at all (i.e. the divine powers of the saints and Mary). By the early 2nd century doctrines such as baptismal regeneration, … were already essential to the faith.

Livy applied the term to Laelius and other men on Scipio’s staff, to whom the general awarded deco- rations.2 Sallust uses the term homines militares for two praetors of 63 BC.3 His prime example of a homo militaris is M. Petreius, who had “won great glory in the army for more than thirty years as tribune or legate or praetor.”4 Tacitus seems to have applied the term to men of lower rank, when lamenting how under Domitian “so many armies had been lost, in Moesia and Dacia, in Germany and Pannonia, by the folly or cowardice of their generals, so many military men, with so many cohorts, had been defeated in battle and taken prisoner.”5 Augustus’ reform of the political and military system reduced the opportu- nities for lengthy service and of course for winning glory. Corbulo had been up against the changed conditions under Claudius, and is said by Tacitus to have reacted to the emperor’s ban on his campaigning beyond the Rhine by sighing 1 This paper is a postscript to A.R. Martin [p.51] The purpose of this opusculum is a modest one. It is simply to add an extended footnote to Pliny’s text, alluded to in the final paragraph of the article ‘Aspects of Worship in the New Testament Church’ in Vox Evangelica II (1963)*. This subsequent issue of the Journal gives opportunity to pursue an enquiry about early Christian hymns into the second century AD. I. PLINY’S ACCOUNT The Roman official Pliny held office as governor of the province of Pontus and Bithynia in Asia Minor for a period of fifteen months or so in AD 111-112. During that time he corresponded with the emperor Trajan. One piece of extant correspondence is of great interest to the student of Christian history.1 Pliny had sought to enforce an edict which proscribed the profession of Christianity. But he was uncertain as to the correctness of the procedure he had adopted. He wrote, therefore, to Trajan seeking guidance. He explained the method of procedure he had hitherto followed; and in the course of his letter he related some information about Christian practices which he had received from certain Christian apostates. ‘They asserted that this was the sum and substance of their fault or their error; namely that they were in the habit of meeting before dawn on a stated day and singing alternately a hymn to Christ as to a god, and that they bound themselves by an oath, not to the commission of any wicked deed, but that they would abstain from theft and robbery and adultery, that they would not break their word, and that they would not withhold a deposit when reclaimed.
