Na po- czątku jego realizacji, jesienią roku 2000, zabrakło wieloletniego Kierownika nau- kowego Testimoniów i Autora komentarzy erudycyjnych, doc. dr. hab. Wincentego Swobody. Jego odejście poważnie osłabiło zespół badawczy, ale nie spowodowało wstrzymania prac. Pierwotne założenia naszego opracowania udało się zrealizować jednak tylko częściowo. Wybór przekazów kronikarskich przewidzianych dla tego zeszytu ograniczyliśmy początkowo do czterech źródeł: Kontynuacji Teofanesa, Kronik z kręgu Symeona Logotety, Dziejów Leona Diakona oraz Przeglądu dziejów Jana Skylitzesa. Ostatecznie, wobec braku zespołu opracowującego, zdecydowa- liśmy się na przesunięcie dzieła Jana Skylitzesa do zeszytu następnego. Stało się to konieczne z powodu znacznej objętości ekscerptów z tego dzieła oraz potrzeby rozszerzenia zakresu zagadnień badawczych. Dlatego w niniejszym zeszycie znala- zły się skomentowane fragmenty tylko trzech pierwszych wymienionych źródeł.

Goodyear: Inside and Outside the Purple: How Armenians Made Byzantium Inside and Outside the Purple: How Armenians Made Byzantium Michael Goodyear University of Chicago (Chicago, Illinois) In the past few decades, there has been an increasing academic and popular focus on ethnic minorities, even turning minority studies into a viable academic field. In this new trend, however, minority studies are primarily focused on the present and recent past. This ignores the importance of historical minorities, especially ones that impacted states to such a degree as the Armenians impacted the Byzantine Empire. In addition to their own national history and culture, ethnic Armenians were also a highly important minority inside the Byzantine Empire.1 During the middle centuries of Byzantium, from 610 to 1071, the Armenian populace served as an important source of manpower, and individuals of Armenian descent rose to the highest dignities in the Byzantine Empire as generals, politicians, patriarchs, intellectuals, and even emperors.

And no wonder: his mother came from beyond the Danube .1 Lactantius about Galerius, Diocletian’s Caesar Symeon I, the third son of Boris-Michael (852–889), ruler of Bulgaria who was officially baptised in the mid-ninth century, in his youth was educated in Constantinople . He knew the language and Greek/Byzantine culture, and probably was destined to become the head of the Bulgarian Church . However, fate decided that he became the ruler of Bulgaria after his older brother Vladimir (889–893), who betrayed his father’s political and religious policies and was overthrown by Boris . Symeon ruled between 893–927, as the first Bulgarian ruler assuming in 913 the title of tsar, or emperor (Gr . βασιλεύς) . He was the builder of the new, Christian capital of Bulgaria – Veliki Preslav . As a patron of culture, and being himself an author, he was said to have loved books above all else and wrote many of them personally, as well as played music and sung like the biblical king David (as a contemporary Bulgarian com- parison would have it)2 . The Bulgarian ruler was to be an extraordinaly pious man, leading a humble, even ascetic life . During his reign, the more complicated Glagolitic script was replaced by the Cyrillic alphabet, created in Preslavian literary circles, and from that time onward became the official literary language of the Bulgars .
