Mortimer Heritage Trail
Mortimer Heritage Trail Walk 2: Mortimer Common 3km (2.25 miles) This second of two moderate walks identifying interesting properties and places covers Mortimer Common, the newer part of the village, with homes being built mainly after 1880. Until then it had grown gorse and birch but not much else, the gravel soil being useless for agriculture. The Enclosure Acts from earlier that century had put the Common into private ownership. Housebuilding started slowly with existing ‘squatter’ cottages in Longmoor, Groves Corner and Summerlug being joined by a few more. West End House and Briar Lea House were the only sizeable properties by 1840. After land sales in 1870-71, house building started in earnest from about 1880 including in Windmill Road, Victoria Road and King Street (named after Mr King the baker), the population growing rapidly from the early 1900s. We start at the Community Centre car park, marked (1) on the red route on page 4, in the Fairground. The Fairground, is designated as an open space amenity. Today this is where travelling fairs and circuses come and village events are held. In the past, it has been used for gymkhanas, which have attracted Royal participants. Earlier still cattle and horse fairs were held there with animals being driven along Welshman’s Road allegedly from Wales but more likely from the railway sidings at Padworth. The Horse and Groom pub opposite would have been the oldest pub in the village had it remained in its original 17th century half-timbered building. The present pub was built adjacent, the original becoming a butcher’s shop. -

Ed and his family made the move to Mirfield in 2000 where he studied for the priesthood at the College of the Resurrection. Ordained in 2003, Ed served his curacy in Carrington on the outskirts of Nottingham before being appointed as Priest in Charge of Chapel St Leonards and Hogsthorpe. -

GS Misc 1158 GENERAL SYNOD Next Steps on Human Sexuality Following the February 2017 Group of Sessions, the Archbishops of Canterbury and York issued a letter on 16th February outlining their proposals for continuing to address, as a church, questions concerning human sexuality. The Archbishops committed themselves and the House of Bishops to two new strands of work: the creation of a Pastoral Advisory Group and the development of a substantial Teaching Document on the subject. This paper outlines progress toward the realisation of these two goals. Introduction 1. Members of the General Synod will come back to the subject of human sexuality with very clear memories of the debate and vote on the paper from the House of Bishops (GS 2055) at the February 2017 group of sessions. 2. Responses to GS 2055 before and during the Synod debate in February underlined the point that the ‘subject’ of human sexuality can never simply be an ‘object’ of consideration for us, because it is about us, all of us, as persons whose being is in relationship. Yes, there are critical theological issues here that need to be addressed with intellectual rigour and a passion for God’s truth, with a recognition that in addressing them we will touch on deeply held beliefs that it can be painful to call into question. It must also be kept constantly in mind, however, that whatever we say here relates directly to fellow human beings, to their experiences and their sense of identity, to their lives and to the loves that shape and sustain them. -

The Rt Revd the Bishop of Southwark Rex Andrew Pastoral By email only Our ref: NB37/256b 30 October 2020 Dear Bishop Mission and Pastoral Measure 2011 Benefice and parish of All Saints, Spring Park; and parishes of St George, Shirley; and Shirley (also known locally as St John, Shirley) Proposed Pastoral Scheme Following the publication of the draft Pastoral Scheme providing for: (i) the dissolution of the benefice and parish of All Saints, Spring Park and the division of the area of its parish between the parishes of St George, Shirley; and Shirley (also known locally as St John, Shirley); (ii) the parish church of All Saints, Spring Park to become a chapel of ease in the parish of Shirley; (iii) the transfer of the parsonage house of the benefice of All Saints, Spring Park to the Southwark Diocesan Board of Finance as diocesan glebe we received 45 representations against the draft Scheme, 12 in favour, three letters of comment and five which were received out of time (one of which consists of photographs supplementing a representation made within time). The draft Scheme carried the following as the diocesan rationale for your proposals: As the result of ongoing concerns about the financial viability and capacity for governance and mission going forward, the Bishop of Southwark held a Visitation to the parish of All Saints, Spring Park in 2016. This was conducted by the Bishop and Archdeacon of Croydon. A series of Directions were issued as a result of this, designed to help the parish to address these areas. There has sadly been no evidence that this has been the case nor has the parish demonstrated the future capacity to do so. -

Mortimer War Memorial Dedicated in 1921 to Those
MORTIMER WAR MEMORIAL DEDICATED IN 1921 TO THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918 REDEDICATED IN 2000 TO THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN WORLD WAR TWO 1939 - 1945 INTRODUCTION Major John F Kemp MBE, in 2004, presented Stratfield Mortimer Parish Council with the results of his researches into the names of those who died in both World Wars and are listed on the village War Memorial. He also included some information about those from Mortimer who died but are not named on the War Memorial. His document was bound by the Parish Council and since then has been in the reference section of Mortimer Library. The Parish Council in 2014 agreed to make this available online, as part of the Commemoration of the First World War. The format is as presented by Major Kemp, except that he included printed copies of the then current web pages from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission giving the casualty details and the accompanying certificate. These have been replaced by hyperlinks to the same pages. 2015/2016 Report to Parish Council Re: Deanshanger Village Heritage Society
Deanshanger Annual Parish meeting 22 April 2016 Report booklet Deanshanger Parish Council The parish council would like to thank the residents of Deanshanger for voting for them in the 2015 elections, it’s been a challenge as well as hard work, but though the learning curve is a steep one, the council is delivering results now and has plans for 2016 which will help the village. The parish council have maintained the same precept as 2014/15 which is excellent news to residents as there has been no increased costs. The Council have all finances and the records up to date to ensure the monies secured and held by the Parish Council are accountable and the use of funds is widely known. The council has the precept as well as some secured funds from development in the village. There is also the New Homes Bonus which groups of Deanshanger have access to apply to for funds. We have this year looked to work with the police to ensure we have issues facilitated and managed and worked with the police to maintain a safe environment. Also working with the police and the community to support Neighbourhood Watch and understand where we can support new initiatives such as street watch. The council has seen a lot of a change with new councillors, now up to capacity along with a new clerk. All of which has been exciting and challenging, to ensure that the running of the council is in order, up to standard and for everyone to understand the polices which sometimes have been challenging due to the amount of bureaucracy involved. -

INTRODUCTION The East Midlands Synod covers the five counties of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire and the part of Buckinghamshire which encompasses Milton Keynes. Since 2007, when District Councils were abolished, the Synod Officers, staff, Conveners and Consultants, have worked hard to maintain effective contact with our local churches. In 2009 a task group undertook a review of the new structure and three themes emerged: communication (particularly improving the link with local churches), effective and clear strategies and use of the voluntary sector workforce to best effect. This is on-going work and needs to feature in our planned development. -

Pidgeon Thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 15 December 2011 ii iii ABSTRACT Who were the Wydeviles? The family arrived with the Conqueror in 1066. As followers in the Conqueror’s army the Wydeviles rose through service with the Mowbray family. If we accept the definition given by Crouch and Turner for a brief period of time the Wydeviles qualified as barons in the twelfth century. This position was not maintained. By the thirteenth century the family had split into two distinct branches. The senior line settled in Yorkshire while the junior branch settled in Northamptonshire. The junior branch of the family gradually rose to prominence in the county through service as escheator, sheriff and knight of the shire. -
