Article Woza eNanda: perceptions of and attitudes towards heritage and tourism in a South African township Sabine Marschall [email protected] Abstract This paper focuses on local knowledge and perceptions about heritage and tourism in Inanda, north of Durban, in view of the eThekwini municipality’s recent investment in the upgrading of the Inanda Heritage Route. The research is based on in-depth interviews with a cross-section of Inanda residents and tourist guides, as well as a small survey and the experiences of a community outreach project based at two high schools in Inanda. It is evident that many residents of Inanda have never visited the route attractions, show little interest in heritage conservation, and appear to have no genuine sense of ownership of the heritage sites. While being positive about attracting tourists to Inanda, the paper finds that the community knows little about tourism and the needs and motivations of tourists. It is argued that this lack of knowledge and interest impedes local people’s ability to connect with the tourism phenomenon and take advantage of the opportunities it creates. This study highlights especially the role of young people as brokers of new value systems and the importance of instilling a passion for heritage and a locally contextualised understanding of tourism in the transformation of the tourism industry and heritage sector. Introduction Woza eNanda is the marketing slogan for the newly upgraded and revamped Inanda Heritage Route (IHR), outside Durban, part of the Ethekwini Municipality on the South African east coast. The book was first published in hardback in 1992 and it has been re-issued in paperback in 2001. Ralph Bunche was born in Detroit in 1904 and grew up in Los Angeles. He began his tertiary studies at the University of California in Los Angeles in 1927, and later moved on to Harvard University in 1928. After graduating with an MA degree at Harvard, Bunche was offered a teaching post at Howard University where he established the Department of Political Science. In 1932 he went back to Harvard, where he began studying for his doctorate--his topic was French Administration in Togoland and Dahomey--which he obtained in 1934. His initial interest was to compare mixed-race experiences in Brazil and America. -
The Legacy of Inkosi Albert John Luthuli's Christian-Centred Political
Faith and politics in the context of struggle: the legacy of Inkosi Albert John Luthuli’s Christian-centred political leadership Simangaliso Kumalo Ministry, Education & Governance Programme, School of Religion and Theology, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa Abstract Albert John Mvumbi Luthuli, a Zulu Inkosi and former President-General of the African National Congress (ANC) and a lay-preacher in the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa (UCCSA) is a significant figure as he represents the last generation of ANC presidents who were opposed to violence in their execution of the struggle against apartheid in South Africa. He attributed his opposition to violence to his Christian faith and theology. As a result he is remembered as a peace-maker, a reputation that earned him the honour of being the first African to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Also central to Luthuli’s leadership of the ANC and his people at Groutville was democratic values of leadership where the voices of people mattered including those of the youth and women and his teaching on non-violence, much of which is shaped by his Christian faith and theology. This article seeks to examine Luthuli’s legacy as a leader who used peaceful means not only to resist apartheid but also to execute his duties both in the party and the community. The study is a contribution to the struggle of maintaining peace in the political sphere in South Africa which is marked by inter and intra party violence. The aim is to examine Luthuli’s legacy for lessons that can be used in a democratic South Africa. -

“The struggle for survival:”* Adams College’s battle with the Bantu Education Act Percy Ngonyama Honours Research Proposal, Department of Historical Studies University of KwaZulu-Natal Introduction “Adams was the home of inter-racial conferences and gatherings, and its school arrangements were made, not to exemplify apartheid, but to the glory of God. Therefore it became in the eyes of the government an ‘unnational school’, an alien institution, and therefore it had to go.”1 Subsequent to failed attempts to register as an independent school in the wake of the Bantu Education Act of 1953, on 02 December 1956, after more than a century of existence, Adams College, combining a high school, a music school, a teachers training college, and an industrial school, held its final assembly. When Adams reopened in January 1957, with most of the staff having left, including George Copeland Grant-principal of the College from 1949-1956,it had been renamed ‘Amanzimtoti Zulu College’, and was now under the authority of the Nationalist Party government’s department of Native Affairs’ Bantu Education subdivision. The process culminating in what must have been, for many, an extremely emotional occasion on December 02, had begun in 1949 with the constitution of the Eiselen Commission, headed by Dr W.W.M Eiselen- inspector of Native Education in the Transvaal Province- whose report, two years later, paved the way for the passing of the infamous Bantu Education Act, which was, inter alia, aimed at transferring education of the so-called “Bantu” from Missions, the main source of black education prior to the passing of the Bantu Education Act, to the department of Bantu Affairs. -

“A Sampling: Artefact, Document and Image” Rev Dr Scott Couper 18 March 2015 Forum for Schools and Archives AGM, 2015 The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Mission established Inanda Seminary in March 1869 as a secondary school for black girls. For a school to be established for black girls at this time was unheard of. It’s founding was radical, as radical as its first principal, Mary Kelly Edwards, the first single female to be sent by the American Board to southern Africa. Many of South Africa’s most prominent female leadership are products of the Seminary. Inanda Seminary produces pioneers: Nokutela Dube, co-founder of Ohlange Institute with her husband the Reverend John Dube, first President of the African National Congress (ANC), attended the Seminary in the early 1880s. Linguists and missionaries Lucy and Dalitha Seme, sisters of the ANC’s founder Pixley Isaka kaSeme, also attended the Seminary in the 1860s and 1870s. Anna Ntuli became the first qualified African nurse in the Transvaal in 1910 and married the first African barrister in southern Africa, Alfred Mangena. Nokukhanya Luthuli attended from 1917-1919 and taught in 1922 at the Seminary. Nokukhanya accompanied her husband, Albert Luthuli who was the ANC President-General and a member of the Seminary’s Advisory Board, to Norway to receive the 1960 Nobel Peace Prize in 1961. Edith Yengwa also schooled and taught at the Seminary; she attended from 1940, matriculated in 1946, began teaching in 1948 and became the school’s first black head teacher in 1966. The same year she left the Seminary for exile, joining her husband, Masabalala Yengwa, the Secretary of the Natal ANC. -
