Fokus kajian di era pemerintahan Maharaja Tongzhi (1862- 1874) kerana pada zaman tersebut Cixi berjaya melancarkan kudeta yang dikenali sebagai Xinyou 1861 sehingga beliau tersohor sebagai Maharani China yang memerintah ‘di belakang tabir.’ Kajian ini menggunakan kaedah kualitatif dengan meneliti polemik isu peranan Maharani Cixi dalam sejarah moden China. Hal ini sedemikian kerana tanggapan dalam kalangan ahli sejarah terhadap pentadbiran beliau sebagai wanita di belakang tabir masih berbelah bagi. Hasil dapatan kajian ini menunjukkan bahawa Cixi hanyalah mangsa pergelutan politik semasa disebabkan kebobrokan dalaman Dinasti Qing yang di luar kawalan beliau. Kajian ini menyimpulkan bahawa Cixi pada awal pemerintahannya mempunyai iltizam dan keazaman membawa China menuju ke arah sebuah negara moden yang berasaskan model dan pentadbiran Barat. Namun, akhirnya Cixi terpaksa menangguhkan segala usaha pembaharuan tersebut demi memelihara dan mengekalkan kedudukannya daripada ancaman pesaing-pesaing politiknya. Kata kunci: Cixi, Xianfeng, Tongzhi, Putera Gong, Kudeta Xinyou Abstract This article examines Empress Dowager Cixi’s life history up until her ascension to power in 1875. The focus of the study is on the reign of Emperor Tongzhi (1862-1874) because Cixi successfully launched a coup known as Xinyou 1861 until she was known as the Chinese empress who ruled ‘behind the curtains’ during the reign of Emperor Tongzhi. -

CORE STRENGTH WITHIN MONGOL DIASPORA COMMUNITIES Archaeological evidence places early Stone Age human habitation in the southern Gobi between 100,000 and 200,000 years ago 1. While they were nomadic hunter-gatherers it is believed that they migrated to southern Asia, Australia, and America through Beringia 50,000 BP. This prehistoric migration played a major role in fundamental dispersion of world population. As human migration was an essential part of human evolution in prehistoric era the historical mass dispersions in Middle Age and Modern times brought a significant influence on political and socioeconomic progress throughout the world and the latter has been studied under the Theory of Diaspora. This article attempts to analyze Mongol Diaspora and its characteristics. The Middle Age-Mongol Diaspora started by the time of the Great Mongol Empire was expanding from present-day Poland in the west to Korea in the east and from Siberia in the north to the Gulf of Oman and Vietnam in the south. Mongols were scattered throughout the territory of the Great Empire, but the disproportionately small number of Mongol conquerors compared with the masses of subject peoples and the change in Mongol cultural patterns along with influence of foreign religions caused them to fell prey to alien cultures after the decline of the Empire. As a result, modern days Hazara communities in northeastern Afghanistan and a small group of Mohol/Mohgul in India, Daur, Dongxiang (Santa), Monguor or Chagaan Monggol, Yunnan Mongols, Sichuan Mongols, Sogwo Arig, Yugur and Bonan people in China are considered as descendants of Mongol soldiers, who obeyed their Khaan’s order to safeguard the conquered area and waited in exceptional loyalty. -

Wong Global Positioning: Houqua and his China Trade Partners in the Nineteenth Century Abstract This study unearths the lost world of early-nineteenth-century Canton. Known today as Guangzhou, this Chinese city witnessed the economic dynamism of global commerce until the demise of the Canton System in 1842. Records of its commercial vitality and global interactions faded only because we have allowed our image of old Canton to be clouded by China’s weakness beginning in the mid-1800s. By reviving this story of economic vibrancy, I restore the historical contingency at the juncture at which global commercial equilibrium unraveled with the collapse of the Canton system, and reshape our understanding of China’s subsequent economic experience. I explore this story of the China trade that helped shape the modern world through the lens of a single prominent merchant house and its leading figure, Wu Bingjian, known to the West by his trading name of Houqua. -

The Tulku System in Tibetan Buddhism: Its Reliability, Orthodoxy and Social Impacts By Ramin Etesami A thesis submitted to the graduate school in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts at the International Buddhist College, Thailand March, 20 Abstract The Tulku institution is a unique characteristic of Tibetan Buddhism with a central role in this tradition, to the extent that it is present in almost every aspect of Tibet’s culture and tradition. However, despite this central role and the scope and diversity of the socio-religious aspects of the institution, only a few studies have so far been conducted to shed light on it. On the other hand, an aura of sacredness; distorted pictures projected by the media and film industries;political propaganda and misinformation; and tendencies to follow a pattern of cult behavior; have made the Tulku institution a highly controversial topic for research; and consequently, an objective study of the institution based on a critical approach is difficult. The current research is an attempt to comprehensively examine different dimensions of the Tulku tradition with an emphasis on the issue of its orthodoxy with respect to the core doctrines of Buddhism and the social implications of the practice. In this research, extreme caution has been practiced to firstly, avoid any kind of bias rooted in faith and belief; and secondly, to follow a scientific methodology in reviewing evidence and scriptures related to the research topic. Through a comprehensive study of historical accounts, core Buddhist texts and hagiographic literature, this study has found that while the basic Buddhist doctrines allow the possibility for a Buddhist teacher or an advanced practitioner to “return back to accomplish his tasks, the lack of any historical precedence which can be viewed as a typical example of the practice in early Buddhism makes the issue of its orthodoxy equivocal and relative. -

The Indo-Tibetan border begins in the eastern most tip of India in Arunachal Pradesh and ends in the icy heights of the Karakoram Range. Tibet’s influence is seen all over India’s Himalayan region where the Tibetan strain of Mahayana Buddhism predominates. There are over 120 Buddhist monasteries in India’s Himalayan region where the Dalai Lama is venerated as the head of the faith. The languages of Ladakh, Sikkim and Bhutan are variants of Tibetan. The great gompas of Thigse, Shey, Rumtek or Tawang are architecturally similar to the gompas of Tibet and what happens inside them is just the same. India’s ecclesiastical links with Tibet are well established. While Tibet has a distinct identity–its own religion, language, and history–in their fabric of civilization, the Tibetans borrowed their impulses from India. Currently it has more than 700 members. It was founded in 1975 and is registered in Paris. It is a non-profit orga- nization not engaging in any political activity. The purpose of the Association is to promote and foster, by every possible means, scholarly activities related to Chinese Studies in Europe. The EACS serves not only as the scholarly rep- resentative of Chinese Studies in Europe but also as contact or- ganization for academic matters in this field. One of the Association’s major activities are the biennial con- ferences hosted by various centres of Chinese Studies in diffe- rent European countries. The papers presented at these confer- ences comprise all fields from traditional Sinology to studies of modern China. In addition, summer schools and workshops are organized under the auspices of the EACS. The Association car- ries out scholarly projects on an irregular basis. Since 1995 the EACS has provided Library Travel Grants to support short visits for research in major sinological libraries in Western Europe. The scheme is funded by the Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation and destined for PhD students and young scholars, primarily from Eastern European countries. The EACS furthers the careers of young scholars by awarding a Young Scholar Award for outstanding research. A jury selects the best three of the submitted papers, which are then presented at the next bi-an- nual conference. -

INNER ASIA �9 (�0�7) �40–�73 Inner ASIA brill.com/inas Milk, Game or Grain for a Manchurian Outpost Providing for Hulun Buir’s Multi-Environmental Garrison in an Eighteenth-Century Borderland David Bello History Department, Washington & Lee University, USA [email protected] Abstract The long record of imperial China’s Inner Asian borderland relations is not simply multi-ethnic, but ‘multi-environmental’. Human dependencies on livestock, wild ani- mals and cereal cultivars were the prerequisite environmental relations for borderland incorporation. This paper examines such dependencies during the Qing Dynasty’s (1644–1912) establishment of the Manchurian garrison of Hulun Buir near the Qing border with Russia. Garrison logistics proved challenging because provisioning in- volved several indigenous groups—Solon-Ewenki, Bargut and Dagur (Daur)—who did not uniformly subsist on livestock, game or grain, but instead exhibited several, sometimes overlapping, practices not always confined within a single ethnicity. Ensuing deliberations reveal official convictions, some of which can be traced back to the preceding Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), regarding the variable effects of these prac- tices on the formation of Inner Asian military identities. Such issues were distinctive of Qing borderland dynamics that constructed ‘Chinese’ empire not only in more diverse human society, but also in more diverse ecological spheres. www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Identifcation of sequence polymorphisms at 58 STRs and 94 iiSNPs in a Tibetan population using massively parallel sequencing Dan Peng1,2,3, Yinming Zhang1,2,3, Han Ren1,2,3, Haixia Li1,2, Ran Li1,2, Xuefeng Shen1,2, Nana Wang1,2, Erwen Huang1,2*, Riga Wu1,2* & Hongyu Sun1,2* Massively parallel sequencing (MPS) has rapidly become a promising method for forensic DNA typing, due to its ability to detect a large number of markers and samples simultaneously in a single reaction, and sequence information can be obtained directly. In the present study, two kinds of forensic genetic markers, short tandem repeat (STR) and identity-informative single nucleotide polymorphism (iiSNP) were analyzed simultaneously using ForenSeq DNA Signature Prep Kit, a commercially available kit on MPS platform. A total of 152 DNA markers, including 27 autosomal STR (A-STR) loci, 24 Y chromosomal STR (Y-STR) loci, 7 X chromosomal STR (X-STR) loci and 94 iiSNP loci were genotyped for 107 Tibetan individuals (53 males and 54 females). Compared with length-based STR typing methods, 112 more A-STR alleles, 41 more Y-STR alleles, and 24 more X-STR alleles were observed at 17 A-STRs, 9 Y-STRs, and 5 X-STRs using sequence-based approaches. Thirty-nine novel sequence variations were observed at 20 STR loci. When the fanking regions were also analyzed in addition to target SNPs at the 94 iiSNPs, 38 more alleles were identifed. Our study provided an adequate genotype and frequencies data of the two types of genetic markers for forensic practice. -

Policy Forum The Chinese Communists Find Religion The Struggle for the Selection of the Next Dalai Lama Anne Thurston Lhamo Thondup was just two years old when he was recognized as the reincarnation of the Thirteenth Dalai Lama. The Great Thirteenth, as he is popularly known, had died in Lhasa in 1933 at the age of fifty-eight. The team charged with finding his new incarnation was composed of leading lamas from monasteries in Tibet, and some were eminent reincarnations themselves. Clues and omens unique to Tibetan Buddhism— some provided by the Thirteenth Dalai Lama himself—guided their search. The Dalai Lama had intimated that his reincarnation would be found in the east. Thus, when the head of the embalmed Great Thirteenth was discovered to have turned overnight from facing south to pointing northeast, the search team was certain which direction their journey should take. When the regent in charge of the search visited the sacred Lhamo Lhatso Lake and gazed into its deep blue waters, the characters for “Ah,” “Ka,” and “Ma” appeared, and he saw a hilltop monastery with a golden roof and an ordinary farmer’s house with strangely configured gutters. The “Ah” led the search team to the Amdo region of eastern Tibet, then governed by the Hui (Muslim) warlord Ma Bufang as Qinghai, as the region is known in Chinese. The “Ka” and the vision of a monastery led them to Amdo’s Kumbum monastery, one of Tibetan Buddhism’s leading seats of religious learning, built by the founder of the Gelugpa, or Yellow Hat, school of Buddhism to which all Dalai Lamas have belonged.
