Title: Castle Rocks: a Late Miocene Eruptive Center at the North End of Green Ridge, Jefferson County,Oregon Redacted forprivacy Abstract approved: Dr. Edward M. Taylor Castle Rocks is 12 miles east of Mt. Jefferson,in the central Cascades of Oregon. The area contains volcanic rocks ranging from mid-Miocene to Holocene inage. These rocks record alternating periods of tholeiitic and calc-alkalinevolcanism. The oldest rocks in thearea range from basaltic andesite lava flows to fayalite-bearing dacitebreccias, and are best exposed near the confluence of the Metoliusand Whitewater rivers. Petrographic and compositional evidenceindicates that the dacites are highly differentiated products ofa tholeiitic fractionation trend. The dacites were apparently derived frombasalt by the fractionation of olivine, clinopyroxene and plagioclase. The most prominent feature of the thesisarea is the remnant of a calc-alkaline composite volcano of late Mioceneage. The center of the volcano is marked bya pyroxene andesite plug near the north end of Green Ridge. This "Castle Rocks Volcano" produced andesitic lava flows and pyroclastic rocks characterized by abundant hornblende phenocrysts. Compositional trends are consistent with fractionation of hornblende, clinopyroxene andpossibly plagioclase. The Castle Rocks Volcano isunconformably overlain by ash-flow tuffs and basaltic andesite lavasof the Deschutes Formation. The unconformity representsa period of change from compressional to extensional tectonics. Deschutes Formation rocks show tholeiitic compositional trends, apparentlyproduced by the fractionation of olivine, clinopyroxene and plagioclase. North-south normal faultingon the Green Ridge fault system terminated deposition of the DeschutesFormation at about 5.4 Ma.

A THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDY HEIKKI MÄKIPÄÄ MÄKIPÄÄ, HEIKKI 1979: Crystallization history of some post- metamorphic diabases in Åland, Häme and Satakunta, Finland. A theoretical and experimental study. Bull. Geol. Soc. Finland 51, 93—124. The crystallization history of ten diabase dykes from three different sets in southern Finland are described. The most primitive diabase magma can be derived from partially melted mantle. Evolving these magmas in the crust under different crystallization conditions the relationships between individual dykes can be explained. The intrusion temperature has been derived to be about 1140—1170 °C and no clear distinction between individual sets can be made. The results reveal that phenocrysts and megacrysts already were in the magma before intrusion. In the narrow dykes (width less than 3 m) the cooling was so rapid that the phenocrysts had not time enough to reequilibrate. The mega- and phenocryst concentration in the middle of the dyke is explained by flowage differentiation.
