“In the Mood”—Glenn Miller (1939) Added to the National Recording Registry: 2004 Essay by Cary O’Dell Glenn Miller Original release label “Sun Valley Serenade” Though Glenn Miller and His Orchestra’s well-known, robust and swinging hit “In the Mood” was recorded in 1939 (and was written even earlier), it has since come to symbolize the 1940s, World War II, and the entire Big Band Era. Its resounding success—becoming a hit twice, once in 1940 and again in 1943—and its frequent reprisal by other artists has solidified it as a time- traversing classic. Covered innumerable times, “In the Mood” has endured in two versions, its original instrumental (the specific recording added to the Registry in 2004) and a version with lyrics. The music was written (or written down) by Joe Garland, a Tin Pan Alley tunesmith who also composed “Leap Frog” for Les Brown and his band. The lyrics are by Andy Razaf who would also contribute the words to “Ain’t Misbehavin’” and “Honeysuckle Rose.” For as much as it was an original work, “In the Mood” is also an amalgamation, a “mash-up” before the term was coined. It arrived at its creation via the mixture and integration of three or four different riffs from various earlier works. Its earliest elements can be found in “Clarinet Getaway,” from 1925, recorded by Jimmy O’Bryant, an Arkansas bandleader. For his Paramount label instrumental, O’Bryant was part of a four-person ensemble, featuring a clarinet (played by O’Bryant), a piano, coronet and washboard. Five years later, the jazz piece “Tar Paper Stomp” by Joseph “Wingy” Manone, from 1930, beget “In the Mood’s” signature musical phrase. -

Appendix: The Recordings These are the URLs of the original locations where I found the recordings used in this book. Those without a URL came from a cassette tape, LP or CD in my personal collection, or from now-defunct YouTube or Grooveshark web pages. I had many of the other recordings in my collection already, but searched for online sources to allow the reader to hear what I heard when writing the book. Naturally, these posted “videos” will disappear over time, although most of them then re- appear six months or a year later with a new URL. If you can’t find an alternate location, send me an e-mail and let me know. In the meantime, I have provided low-level mp3 files of the tracks that are not available or that I have modified in pitch or speed in private listening vaults where they can be heard. Mrazek (published March 2011) The 306th‘s own Martin ―Andy‖ Andrews, pilot with the 423rd Bomb Squadron at Thurleigh is featured in this book, along with Generals Hap Arnold and Ira Eaker and a few others from nearby bomb groups who participated in the Stuttgart mission on September 6, 1943. The author weaves a fascinating story that reads almost like a novel, griping and filled with drama. I highly recommend this new book to anyone who is interested in the Eighth Air Force and the 306th Bomb Group in World War II. You will learn a great deal about the forces at work that surrounded the 306th during those first years of war in ―merry olde England.‖ ~ ~ ~ A recent review of the book by Military Book Club is being circulated in several places, and it gives a good overview of the book: On September 6, 1943, three hundred and thirty-eight B-17 "Flying Fortresses" of the American Eighth Air Force took off from England, bound for Stuttgart, Ger- many. It was the largest force ever assembled against a single target in the war. The 20-mile-long armada of Fortresses was on a mission to bomb Nazi weapons facto- ries at Stuttgart. He began singing professionally while at the piano and auditioning me on the spot. SPRAGG Chronology Part 1 - Chapter 1 Updated February 5, 2021 “I’ll Never Say Never Again” “The Brothers” Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey The Dorsey Brothers’ Orchestra opened at the Glen Island Casino, New Rochelle, New York on May 15, 1935. Many celebrities attended the successful opening night and the band was in top form. All signs pointed to a successful summer season and further sales of more records. In addition, the Glen Island Casino was wired for numerous nationwide radio broadcasts. However, an undercurrent of tension existed between the brothers. May 30, 1935, during the Decoration Day holiday weekend (now known as Memorial Day), the situation came to a head. As Tommy led the band into the tune “I’ll Never Say “Never Again” Again”, the vocal trio of Roc Hillman, Skeets Herfurt and Don Matteson were approaching the microphone. They remembered hearing Jimmy say something like “Hey, Mac, that’s a little fast, isn’t it?” Tommy reportedly replied, “You want to take over? It’s all yours” and he walked off the bandstand before the audience at the Glen Island Casino. By late July Tommy reluctantly returned to finish the engagement with Jimmy and the band at the urging of Tommy Rockwell and a threat by Michael DeZutter, owner of the Glen Island Casino, to nullify the Dorsey Brothers’ Orchestra contract for the remainder of the engagement. Cork O’Keefe unsuccessfully tried to reconcile the brothers. Tommy refused to work with his brother and the Dorsey Brothers’ Orchestra became Jimmy Dorsey and his Orchestra. -
