This album was “Gerry Mulligan & Astor Piazzolla”. But it was through “Song for Strayhorn” (Carnegie Hall concert CTI album) I fell in love with the music of Gerry Mulligan. My impressions were: “How great this man is to be able to compose so nicely!, to improvise so marvellously! and to give us such feelings!” Step by step my interest for the music increased I bought regularly his albums and I became crazy from the Concert Jazz Band LPs. Then I appreciated the pianoless Quartets with Bob Brookmeyer (The Pleyel Concerts, which are easily available in France) and with Chet Baker. Just married with Danielle, I spent some days of our honey moon at Antwerp (Belgium) and I had the chance to see the Gerry Mulligan Orchestra in concert. After the concert my wife said: “During some songs I had lost you, you were with the music of Gerry Mulligan!!!” During these 30 years of travel in the music of Jeru, I bought many bootleg albums. One was very important, because it gave me a new direction in my passion: the discographical part. This was the album “Gerry Mulligan – Vol. 2, Live in Stockholm, May 1957”. -

Having played the instru- ment for, then, almost two decades, I thought that a novelist would not, could not, feature specialty instruments such as the C-melody sax if he did not play the horn himself. Once the saxophone had caught my attention, I noticed all sorts of uncommon references that seemed to confirm my hunch that Thomas Pynchon himself played the instrument: McClintic Sphere’s 4½ reed, the contra- bass sax of Against the Day, Gravity’s Rainbow’s Charlie Parker passage. -

Young of Allentown Pennsylvania has been the director since at least 1978 and likely longer. Its purpose is to maintain contact with the many fans of Norma Zimmer and keep them up-to-date with her life and activities. The main medium of communication is its quarterly newsletter. Sahalie Historical Note #10: Members of the 1940s Second in my decadal series, this article continues my attempt to document all references to Sahalie Ski Club members ‐‐ in this case, the 1940s. It is thus long and tedious, with lots of footnotes. If you make it through, and notice any names that bring up stories to tell or more details that we’d like to know about, please get in touch! I should note that it is quite likely that many members joined the club earlier than their first mention in the newspaper or other official source. As we fill in more details from family records and other references, I’m sure we will lower the date of first membership for some people. On that note, I should also mention that all of these articles are intended to be drafts or works‐in‐progress. As we learn more, we will keep updating these records to reflect our best understanding of Sahalie Ski Club and the history of skiing in the Northwest. So definitely speak up if you trip over something or have something to add to the story. A brief summary of Sahalie in the 1940s: The early 1940s showed Sahalie Ski Club booming, with the world’s situation looming. Two of Sahalie’s prodigies, Bill Redlin and Carl Neu, led the U.W. ski team to national honors. Bill went on to teach skiing to Army troops in early 1942; Carl enlisted in 1943 after graduating. Other notable ski racers for the club in the early 1940s Bill Redlin and Carl Neu, both former Sahalie members, racing for the U.W. -

It turns out she has been active in the Society for some years, keeping it moving in the east, while its main offices are in Los Angeles. Most of us became familiar with the name Fran Warren when Claude Thornhill’s recording of SUNDAY KIND OF LOVE (1947) came out, but she was on the road with Charlie Barnet and with Art Mooney’s original orchestra before that, and had been singing profession- ally with local bands since her early teenage years. She was born Frances Wolfe in the Bronx on March 4, 1928, but was given the name Warren by her friend Billy Eckstine early in her career, the name having been taken from a brand of wine popular in Harlem at Fran sings the time. “Why don’t you sing with the group?” because I was We’re always curious about the reasons anyone fol always singing. -

This Lineage stretches back into the Late 1950s, but has LargeLy been unexplored beyond a seLect few high-profiLe artists. I trace the evoLution of Liturgical jazz from several composers’ earLiest attempts to the present day. ALthough the Liturgical jazz movement began in the Late 1950s, it was primariLy a product of the turbuLent 1960s in America. This was a period of great change and expLoration not onLy in jazz but in organized reLigion as weLL. A deep and frank discussion emerged as to what Liturgical music shouLd and wouLd be alLowed to sound Like. These decisions at the highest LeveLs of denominations had ramifications that are stiLL being feLt today in the churches of America; however, the primary focus of this dissertation is on the formative period of Liturgical jazz during the 1960s and earLy 1970s. These years give a basis for better understanding and appreciating the deveLopment and defining features of Liturgical jazz. SummerLin is a figure that is often cited as a pioneer in Liturgical jazz, but no one has offered a history of his Life, his music, or why his Liturgical music was so revoLutionary.
