New Residency Program In State: Cayuga Medical Center

Cayuga Medical Center (CMC) at Ithaca is excited to announce the start of its new Internal Medicine Residency. CMC, located in Tompkins County, NY, is situated in the Region, surrounded by several undergraduate institutions including , and Tompkins Community College. Despite its robust academic, cultural, and outdoor offerings, Tompkins County is designated as a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) for primary care by the Health Resources and Services Administration, highlighting the difficulty in attracting primary care providers to rural communities.

The innovative residency program, developed in partnership with New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, has a strong community and primary care focus. CMC’s mission is to provide high quality, patient centered care in a safe, compassionate, and sustainable manner. The residency program is accredited for 10 residents per year and its first class, which started in July 2019, will further these goals as they develop into the future physician leaders of Central New York and beyond.

The CMC Internal Medicine Residency offers a unique training track where some residents have the opportunity to spend their entire first year training in a resource-rich urban center alongside Weill-Cornell Internal Medicine residents in Manhattan, NY. These residents will complete their final two years of training in Ithaca at Cayuga Medical Center. This unique training experience exposes the residents in this track to the differences in practice between large urban centers and smaller community and highlights many of the joys, opportunities and benefits the practice of medicine in a rural community brings.
