Sampling Media, Oxford University Press, Editors: Laurel Westrup, David Laderman, pp.60-72 1 “Rigorous Infidelity: Whole Text Sampling in the Curatorial Work of Henri Langlois, Dewey Phillips, and Jean-François Lyotard” Barry Mauer Introduction John Rajchman’s “Les Immatériaux or How to Construct the History of Exhibitions” asks, “In what ways have exhibitions, more than simple displays and configurations of objects, helped change ideas about art, intersecting at particular junctions with technical innovations, discursive shifts and larger kinds of philosophical investigations, thus forming part of these larger histories?” This essay attempts to answer his question by discussing curating as whole text sampling.1 Sampling, of which whole text sampling is a subset of practices, is the appropriation and recontextualization of texts or textual fragments; it involves choosing an object or text and deploying it for other uses. -

AACTFest History AACTFest had its beginnings in 1957. At that time, the first World Festival of Amateur Theatre (Le Festival Mondiale du Théâtre Amateur) was held in the principality of Monaco under the high patronage of Their Serene Highnesses Prince Ranier and Princess Grace. The World Festival of Amateur Theatre was, and is, the official festival of the International Amateur Theatre Association (AITA/IATA). The typical American definition of amateur, implying a relative lack of skill, is not accepted by AITA/IATA. Amateur is used in the context of “to love”; thus, an amateur is one who does something for love and pleasure rather than for monetary remuneration. While AITA/IATA handles the international aspects, the festival itself is almost entirely a Monégasque production organized by the Studio de Monaco, home of the Cercle Artistique Monégasque d’Amateurs de Théâtre. Random theatres from America took turns representing the U.S. at this quadrennial international event. After eight years, the World Festival organization contacted the American National Theatre and Academy (ANTA). Through the offices of Princess Grace, ANTA was asked to provide input as to what theatres from the U.S. should attend the World Festival. ANTA felt it would be more appropriate to pass the invitation on to the American Community Theatre Association (ACTA). ACTA was the community theatre division of the seven year old American Theatre Association (ATA) umbrella organization. (In 1965 ACTA consisted of approximately 12 to 14 community theatres and had a membership of 40 to 50.) Howard Orms, the President of ACTA, contacted several theatres with no success. -

“That’s All Right” on Memphis Radio, July 1954 Source: Historic-Memphis.com Dewey Phillips was a longtime disc jockey at WHBQ radio in Memphis, Tennessee. Phillips was known for playing music recorded by both black and white and artists. Shortly after Elvis Presley made his first recording, a single whose A-side was the Rhythm and Blues song “That’s All Right,” Phillips became the first disc jockey in the country to play the song on the radio, in July 1954. The account below is taken from the book The Last Train to Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley, by Peter Guralnick. The response was instantaneous… He played the record seven times in a row, eleven times, seven times over the course of the rest of the program. In retrospect it doesn’t really matter; it seemed as if all of Memphis was listening as Dewey kept up his nonstop patter, egging his radio audience on, encouraging them to join him in the discovery of a new voice… For Gladys [Presley, Elvis’ mother] the biggest shock was “hearing them say his name over the radio just before they put on that record…” She didn’t have time to think about it for long anyway, because almost immediately the phone rang. It was Dewey for Elvis… He said, “Mrs. Presley, you just get that cotton-picking son of yours down here to the station. I played that record of his, and them birdbrain phones haven’t stopped ringing since.”… Within minutes, Elvis was at the station. “I was scared to death,” Elvis said. -

In 1907, the theater became part of the Orpheum Vaudeville circuit and was renamed the Orpheum Theatre. In 1923, a fired destroyed the building, which was rebuilt. A new, larger theater opened in 1928. The Malco theater chain purchased the building in 1940, running first run movies until 1976. The following year, the Memphis Development Foundation purchased the Orpheum and began bringing Broadway productions and concerts back to the theater. The theater underwent another renovation in the early 1980s, restoring it to its 1928 grandeur. At present, the Orpheum continues to bring in performances and averages ten to twelve Broadway shows a year. The Orpheum Collection consists of two boxes spanning 1 linear foot. The collection contains materials from the Memphis and Shelby County Room pertaining to the Orpheum Theatre. Items in the collection include the souvenir opening programs from 1928 and 1984; Orpheum publications: Backstage, After Five, Broadway at the Orpheum, Marquee, and the Orpheum Circuit News; and miscellaneous memorabilia. Single photocopies or scans of unpublished writings in these papers may be made for purposes of scholarly research. While the Memphis Public Library & Information Center may house an item, it does not necessarily hold the copyright on the item, nor may it be able to determine if the item is still protected under current copyright law. -

Les Misérables is just such a show. The collaboration between DLO Musical Theatre and DACC Players has been a powerful coming to- gether of two groups that, by themselves, could not have produced this show. The combinations of talent, from actors, singers, and musicians, to the directors and production staff, have put together a show that highlights what this community can do. From the directors’ perspective, it has been exciting to work with the tal- ented singers that have spent many hours without complaint in rehearsal. Every person in this show has worked well with the cast, the directing team and the production team.
