Megalithic Research in the Netherlands, 1547-1911
J.A. B A KKER Megalithic Research in the Netherlands The impressive megalithic tombs in the northeastern Netherlands are called ‘hunebedden’, meaning ‘Giants’ graves’. These enigmatic Neolithic structures date to around 3000 BC and were built by the Funnelbeaker, or TRB, people. The current interpretation of these monuments, however, is the result of over 400 years of megalithic research, the history of which is recorded in this book. The medieval idea that only giants could have put the huge boulders of which they were made into position was still defended in 1660. Others did not venture to MEG explain how hunebeds could have been constructed, but ascribed them to the most I ancient, normally sized inhabitants. 16th-century writings speculated that Tacitus was N THE NETHE referring to hunebeds when he wrote about the ‘Pillars of Hercules’ in Germania. A Titia Brongersma is the first person recorded to do excavations in a hunebed, in LITHIC RESE 1685. The human bones she excavated were from normally sized men and suggested that such men, not giants, had constructed the hunebeds. Other haphazard diggings followed, but much worse was the invention of stone covered dikes which required large amounts of stone. This launched a widespread collection of erratic boulders, which included the hunebeds. Boundary stones were stolen and several hunebeds R were seriously damaged or they vanished completely. Such actions were forbidden in L an 1734, by one of the earliest laws protecting prehistoric monuments in the world. ar DS From the mid 18th century onwards a variety of eminent but relatively unknown CH researchers studied the hunebeds, including Van Lier (1760), Camper and son (1768- 1808), Westendorp (1815), Lukis and Dryden (1878) and Pleyte (1877-1902). -
Hans Christian Andersen and His Social Reception in Austria
Hans Christian Andersen and his Social Reception in Austria Sven Hakon Rossel Professor, University of Vienna Abstract This article documents Hans Christian Andersen’s gradual development from being a young unknown Danish writer to becoming socially accepted and acknowledged as an integral part of Austrian social and artistic life. The point of departure is his second novel Kun en Spillemand (Andersen, 1837/1988; Only a Fiddler) of which two chapters are set in Vienna. This process of so-called acculturation, i.e. the appropriation of various social, psychological and cultural elements of the country visited, begins with Andersen’s first stay in Austria in 1834 – the first of altogether six visits – and finds its climax in 1846, when he is invited to give a reading of his fairy tales at the imperial castle in Vienna. It is noteworthy that this process to a large degree was the result of a planned strategy on Andersen’s behalf. Before arriving in Vienna, he procured letters of recommendation and upon arrival he systematically made friends with the city’s most important artistic and intellectual personalities. Another strategic move, of course, was to choose Vienna as a partial setting for his most successful novel in the German-speaking world. Introduction: Only a Fiddler In Hans Christian Andersen’s second novel, Kun en Spillemand (Andersen, 1837/1988; Only a Fiddler), a Bildungsroman like his other five novels, one of the characters, a Danish physician living in the Austrian capital Vienna, compares Austria with Denmark and arrives at this conclusion: The inhabitants of Vienna possess so much, both that which is good and that which is petty- minded, they have this in common with the inhabitants of Copenhagen, the difference being that the Viennese possess more liveliness. -

A Brief History of Medieval Monasticism in Denmark (With Schleswig, Rügen and Estonia)
religions Article A Brief History of Medieval Monasticism in Denmark (with Schleswig, Rügen and Estonia) Johnny Grandjean Gøgsig Jakobsen Department of Nordic Studies and Linguistics, University of Copenhagen, 2300 Copenhagen, Denmark; [email protected] Abstract: Monasticism was introduced to Denmark in the 11th century. Throughout the following five centuries, around 140 monastic houses (depending on how to count them) were established within the Kingdom of Denmark, the Duchy of Schleswig, the Principality of Rügen and the Duchy of Estonia. These houses represented twelve different monastic orders. While some houses were only short lived and others abandoned more or less voluntarily after some generations, the bulk of monastic institutions within Denmark and its related provinces was dissolved as part of the Lutheran Reformation from 1525 to 1537. This chapter provides an introduction to medieval monasticism in Denmark, Schleswig, Rügen and Estonia through presentations of each of the involved orders and their history within the Danish realm. In addition, two subchapters focus on the early introduction of monasticism to the region as well as on the dissolution at the time of the Reformation. Along with the historical presentations themselves, the main and most recent scholarly works on the individual orders and matters are listed. Keywords: monasticism; middle ages; Denmark Citation: Jakobsen, Johnny Grandjean Gøgsig. 2021. A Brief For half a millennium, monasticism was a very important feature in Denmark. From History of Medieval Monasticism in around the middle of the 11th century, when the first monastic-like institutions were Denmark (with Schleswig, Rügen and introduced, to the middle of the 16th century, when the last monasteries were dissolved Estonia).
