Patrick Kragelund, Nathanson, Eckersberg's Moses, and Danish
RIHA Journal 0119 | 7 May 2015 Nathanson, Eckersberg's Moses, and Danish Haskalah ('Reformed Judaism')* Patrick Kragelund Peer review and editing managed by: Elisabeth Kofod-Hansen, Danmarks Kunstbibliotek / The Danish National Art Library, Copenhagen Reviewers: Karina Lykke Grand, Kasper Monrad Abstract Among the patrons of the young C. W. Eckersberg (1783-1853), the Jewish merchant M. L. Nathanson (1780-1868) was the most important. A key figure in the process eventually leading to the Danish Jews obtaining complete legal and civic parity (1849), Nathanson can be shown to have pioneered art patronage as a platform for social and cultural integration. His commissions for patriotic "Galleries" (imitating Boydell's British Shakespeare Gallery) and for family portraits illustrate his efforts to give art a new role in this process. Hitherto ignored, so does his commission for a monumental Moses Crossing the Red Sea – a work that in its iconography, as developed by Eckersberg between 1812 and 1817, represents a remarkable fusion of Jewish, Greco-Roman and Christian elements that combined with overt loans from Raphael and Giovanni Donducci gives it a unique place in Eckersberg's oeuvre. Contents Introduction Nathanson and the Danish Art Scene Nathanson and Eckersberg Eckersberg's Moses – an Emblem of Jewish Reform Introduction [1] The bicentenary of Jewish emancipation in Denmark (1814-2014)1 calls for a re- examination of the connection between the foremost of early Dano-Jewish reformers and the painter Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg (1783-1853).2 [2] Mendel Levin Nathanson (1780-1868) hailed from the Jewish community in the then Danish free-trade emporium in Altona just outside the German merchant metropolis of Hamburg, from whence, as a poor, semi-literate boy, he came to Copenhagen to work in the firm of his uncle.3 Gifted, self-taught and energetic, Nathanson soon found success and wealth in the burgeoning Baltic trade. -
Political Imagination in German Romanticism John Thomas Gill
Wild Politics : Political Imagination in German Romanticism John Thomas Gill A dissertation submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Ph.D in the Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures in the College of Arts and Sciences. Chapel Hill 2020 Approved by: Gabriel Trop Eric Downing Stefani Engelstein Jakob Norberg Aleksandra Prica i © 2020 John Thomas Gill ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT John Gill: Wild Politics : Political Imagination in German Romanticism (Under the direction of Gabriel Trop) The political discourse of German Romanticism is often interpreted reductively: as either entirely revolutionary, reactionary, or indeed apolitical in nature. Breaking with this critical tradition, this dissertation offers a new conceptual framework for political Romanticism called wild politics . I argue that Romantic wild politics generates a sense of possibility that calls into question pragmatic forms of implementing sociopolitical change; it envisions imaginative alternatives to the status quo that exceed the purview of conventional political thinking. Three major fields of the Romantic political imaginary organize this reading: affect, nature, and religion. Chapter 1 examines Novalis’ politics of affect. In his theory of the fairy tale—as opposed to the actual fairy tales he writes—Novalis proposes a political paradigm centered on the aesthetic dimension of love. He imagines a new Prussian state constituted by emotional attachments between the citizen and the monarch. Chapter 2 takes up the “new mythology” in the works of F.W.J. Schelling, Friedrich Schlegel, and Johann Wilhelm Ritter, the comprehensive project of reorienting modern life towards its most transformative potentials. -

Reading the Surface: the Danish Gothic of B.S. Ingemann, H.C
Reading the Surface: The Danish Gothic of B.S. Ingemann, H.C. Andersen, Karen Blixen and Beyond Kirstine Marie Kastbjerg A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2013 Reading Committee: Marianne Stecher. Chair Jan Sjaavik Marshall Brown Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Scandinavian Studies ©Copyright 2013 Kirstine Marie Kastbjerg Parts of chapter 7 are reprinted by permission of the publishers from “The Aesthetics of Surface: the Danish Gothic 1820-2000,” in Gothic Topographies ed. P.M. Mehtonen and Matti Savolainen (Farnham: Ashgate, 2013), pp. 153–167. Copyright © 2013 University of Washington Abstract Reading the Surface: The Danish Gothic of B.S. Ingemann, H.C. Andersen, Karen Blixen and Beyond Kirstine Marie Kastbjerg Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor in Danish Studies Marianne Stecher Department of Scandinavian Studies Despite growing ubiquitous in both the popular and academic mind in recent years, the Gothic has, perhaps not surprisingly, yet to be examined within the notoriously realism-prone literary canon of Denmark. This dissertation fills that void by demonstrating an ongoing negotiation of Gothic conventions in select works by canonical Danish writers such as B.S. Ingemann, Hans Christian Andersen, and Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen), as well as contemporary writers such as Peter Høeg and Leonora Christina Skov. This examination does not only broaden our understanding of these culturally significant writers and the discourses they write within and against, it also adds to our understanding of the Gothic – an infamously malleable and indefinable literary mode – by redirecting attention to a central feature of the Gothic that has not received much critical attention: the emphasis on excess, spectacle, clichéd conventions, histrionic performances, its hyperbolic rhetorical style, and hyper-visual theatricality. -
REVIEW of an Edition of Jens Baggesen's the Labyrinth to Be
REVIEW of an edition of Jens Baggesen’s The Labyrinth to be published in the Oxford University Press series World's Classics, edited and translated by Jesper Gulddal at the University of Newcastle, Australia By HENRIK BLICHER, Associate Professor, University of Copenhagen, editor of the scholarly edition of Labyrinten eller Reise giennem Tydskland, Schweitz og Frankerig (2016), the Danish blueprint for the proposed translation Making The Labyrinth available to English readers is an excellent idea; in fact, I have long wondered why a translation into English has never been attempted before. We have long had a German as well as a French translation, and recently there has been negotiations about the first thorough translation into Swedish, based, notably, on the unabridged edition from 2016. On another occasion, I have called Baggesen’s work an undisputed masterpiece of Danish literature. It is set in 1789 and offers a unique take on the political and cultural turbulence associated with this year. Its outer form is that of a travelogue, tracing the writer’s journey through Germany, France and Switzerland. However, more than anything, it is the story of the traveller himself – a highly original individual expressing himself in a wealth of different modes and styles, with humour and irony as well as sensibility. As a detailed record of the transition from a classic to a romantic mode of writing, the book is of unparalleled importance in Danish and Scandinavian literature and still has much to offer contemporary readers. To make this work come alive in another language requires considerable skill. To jump to conclusions: Having reviewed a 50-page draft, I am convinced that Jens Baggesen has found his proper translator in Jesper Gulddal. -
Hans Christian Andersen and His Social Reception in Austria
Hans Christian Andersen and his Social Reception in Austria Sven Hakon Rossel Professor, University of Vienna Abstract This article documents Hans Christian Andersen’s gradual development from being a young unknown Danish writer to becoming socially accepted and acknowledged as an integral part of Austrian social and artistic life. The point of departure is his second novel Kun en Spillemand (Andersen, 1837/1988; Only a Fiddler) of which two chapters are set in Vienna. This process of so-called acculturation, i.e. the appropriation of various social, psychological and cultural elements of the country visited, begins with Andersen’s first stay in Austria in 1834 – the first of altogether six visits – and finds its climax in 1846, when he is invited to give a reading of his fairy tales at the imperial castle in Vienna. It is noteworthy that this process to a large degree was the result of a planned strategy on Andersen’s behalf. Before arriving in Vienna, he procured letters of recommendation and upon arrival he systematically made friends with the city’s most important artistic and intellectual personalities. Another strategic move, of course, was to choose Vienna as a partial setting for his most successful novel in the German-speaking world. Introduction: Only a Fiddler In Hans Christian Andersen’s second novel, Kun en Spillemand (Andersen, 1837/1988; Only a Fiddler), a Bildungsroman like his other five novels, one of the characters, a Danish physician living in the Austrian capital Vienna, compares Austria with Denmark and arrives at this conclusion: The inhabitants of Vienna possess so much, both that which is good and that which is petty- minded, they have this in common with the inhabitants of Copenhagen, the difference being that the Viennese possess more liveliness. -

SPONSOR INVITATION It is a great pleasure to invite you to participate in and contribute to the Biofilms 8 which will be held on 27-29 May 2018 in Aarhus, Denmark. What is Biofilms 8, and why attend and support the conference? Biofilms 8 is the 8th conference in a series that cover the topic of bacterial biofilms in the broadest sense. The conference focus is on the basic scientific question of how biofilms form, grow and interact with their surroundings. Hence the conference attracts researchers from the natural sciences, engineering, and health science to exchange their research on how biofilms develop, how they interact with their surroundings, and how they can be controlled in a natural, industrial, or clinical setting. The conference is renowned for its broad and non-clinical scope, and has brought together the top biofilm researchers from Europe, North America and Asia ever second year since it was launched by Prof. Hans- Curt Flemming in Vienna in 2003. The conference alternates with the conference “Eurobiofilms” which is also held every second year, and which caters more for researchers that focus on pathogenic biofilms. By sponsoring Biofilms 8 you get access to - Leading scientists and decision makers - Students and early career scientists - Leading industry opinion leaders - The newest science and knowledge with in the specific field of biofilms Programme highlights - Genes and genetic control in biofilm formation - The biofilm matrix - Biofilms on biomaterials - Modelling biofilms - Biofilm ecology - Evolution in biofilms - Biofilm control - Novel methods for biofilm characterization We expect 300-350 participants mostly from academia to take part in the congress.
