ANAHTAR SÖZCÜKLER Korsanlar, Esirler, Akdeniz, Joseph Pitts, Cezayir, Esâretnâme, Antonio de Sosa vii ABSTRACT DEMİR, Serkan, Joseph Pitts and the Account of His Captivity within the Context of Corsairs, Pirates and Captives in the Mediterranean, Master’s Thesis, Ankara, 2020. The Mediterranean, a conflict and meeting place, witnessed navigation a great number of captives captured by corsairs particularly XVI. and XVII. centuries. Some of these capitives, when they returned to their country, penned memories of captivity due to several reasons or dictated to others. These captives’ narratives, living among Muslims as “others” of Europe, met great interest by the society and were published many times. Joseph Pitts’ narrative of captivity, studied in this thesis, is one of the rare examples that combines three qualities in a narrative of captivity in the early modern age. These three features are narrative of captivity, travel narrative and lastly depiction of the sacred places of Islam. Because Algeria is a border society and corsairs, the prsence of captives from many countries in the world, Algeria has located in a very important place in history of the Mediterranean. In this regard, Pitts’ narrative reflects this cosmopolitanism. As a sailor, captive, traveler and pilgrim Pitts, has mirrored this varieties his narrative of capitivity. Also, Pitts’ narrative was very popular and in early modern age England it projected perception of Islam and contributed “as a insider” available information. TRADE AND SMUGGLING Maria Pia PEDANI University Ca'Foscari of Venice, Department of Historical Studies, I-30123 Venezia, Dorsoduro 3484/d e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT th In the 15 century sultans discovered the economic importance of the Adriatic. th They accepted doges' rule on this sea but, at the end of the 16 century, the presence of Christian and Muslim pirates marred the relations between the two states. Ottoman merchants used to cross the Adriatic to reach the markets of Venice and Ancona. Be- sides regular trade there was also smuggling: above all arms were exported to the Empire while wheat went westwards. Several links united the two commercial commu- nities: for instance, subjects of the Republic embarked sometimes on Ottoman ships; in the ports of the Serenissima the sultan's merchants used to pay the same customs as Venetians and, sometimes, they also insured themselves with Venetian companies. The th wars of the end of the 17 century put a momentary stop to Muslim commercial activi- ties in Venice and in the Adriatic. However, at the beginning of the following century, Albanian vessels charged with Ottoman goods appeared again at St. Mark's docks, even if soon after, in the 1720s', short-sighted Venetian protectionist politics pushed them to prefer the port of Trieste.

  • Ottoman-Spanish Economic Relations in the Sixteenth Century: Rivalry in the Mediterranean
International Journal of Business and Social Science Vol. 2 No. 21 [Special Issue – November 2011] OTTOMAN-SPANISH ECONOMIC RELATIONS IN THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY: RIVALRY IN THE MEDITERRANEAN Faruk Bal* ABSTRACT From the beginning of the sixteenth century, Ottoman and Spanish Empires came up against each other in the Mediterranean. Spain wanted to get access to Sudanese gold via the bases it established in the North African coast, and by gaining sovereignty over the Mediterranean to control the East-West trade and wheat supply which is vital for her. The westward progress of Ottoman State in the Mediterranean and conquest of Egypt brought the encounter of the two parties. Thus, a century long rivalry began. The rivalry not only continued at military area but also at political and economic arena. Both parties banned trade with the rivals. However, the trade between the two worlds preserved its continuity thanks to the intermediary states. Through Venice, French, British, Dutch, Geneva, under Toscana flag, via the European harbors like Marseilles, Livorno and Genoa the trade between the parties persisted. While these European ports were delivering the products demanded by Spain and supplied by Ottomans to the peninsula, they were also accomplishing the heading of American silver to these regions. INTRODUCTION The economic relations between Ottoman and Spanish states followed a specific course within the regional and international conditions of the time, though being not very intense. The claim of world sovereignty on both states put these states at each end of the Mediterranean into rivalry with each other. As Ottomans consider themselves as the sovereign and protector of the Islamic world, they acted in their political, military and economic enterprises by taking this into consideration.

  • The London School of Economics and Political Science the Ideological Origins of Piracy in International Legal Thought Tor Krever
The London School of Economics and Political Science The ideological origins of piracy in international legal thought Tor Krever A thesis submitted to the Department of Law of the London School of Economics for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, London, May 2018 1 Declaration I certify that the thesis I have presented for examination for the PhD degree of the London School of Economics and Political Science is solely my own work other than where I have clearly indicated that it is the work of others (in which case the extent of any work carried out jointly by me and any other person is clearly identified in it). The copyright of this thesis rests with the author. Quotation from it is permitted, provided that full acknowledgement is made. This thesis may not be reproduced without my prior written consent. I warrant that this authorisation does not, to the best of my belief, infringe the rights of any third party. I declare that my thesis consists of 88,133 words. 2 Abstract This thesis explores the origins of the pirate in international legal thought. It takes as its starting point the recent wave of piracy off the coast of Somalia, mapping the image of the pirate constructed by contemporary legal commentators. The figure of the pirate that takes shape is the archetype of illegitimacy and epitome of enmity in international law: hostis humani generis. Where and when did this figure first emerge in international legal thought? My argument is twofold. First, against dominant transhistorical accounts which project the pirate backwards in an unbroken arc from the present to antiquity, I show that its juridical identity has been marked by fundamental discontinuities and transformations.

DATE OF APPROVAL: 10.08.2009 i © Mehmet Kuru, 2009 All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT RELATIONS BETWEEN OTTOMAN CORSAIRS AND THE IMPERIAL NAVY IN THE 16th CENTURY Mehmet Kuru History, M.A. Thesis, Spring 2009 Thesis Supervisor: Y. Hakan Erdem This thesis endeavors to present an analysis of the nature of the relations between ottoman corsairs and the imperial navy in the 16th century. Recruitment of corsairs as naval officers by Ottoman central authority to make up for the insufficient numbers of skilled seamen was presented as a fact in various works. However, there is no study to explain construction period of this relationship and to define the system. This thesis aims to construct a model to explicate this relationship. As of the mid-fifteenth century, Ottoman seapower started to strengthen and Empire conquered several crucial harbors and islands in Black sea and Mediterranean until the end of this century. Ottoman Imperial navy gained a strong infrastructure thanks to these conquests. Apart from Imperial navy, Ottoman corsairs' attacks that were based on these harbors increased and they strengthened gradually. In 1495, an old corsair, Kemal Reis was taken into Ottoman service, thus he became a pioneer for the recruitment of corsairs to Imperial Navy.

Ü. Fadimana FİDAN KARAMAN - 2019 i ÖNSÖZ Tarih boyunca bütün devletlerin en büyük sorunu beslenme olmuştur. Cezâyir-i Bahr-i Sefîd Eyâleti içinde yer alan Rodos, Anadolu’ya yakınlığı ve İstanbul-Mısır ticaret yolunun üzerinde olması stratejik bir konu olan zahirenin sevkiyatında önemli roller üstlenmesini sağladı.
