“The Christian in society”: Reading Barth’s Tambach lecture (1919) in its German context J N J Kritzinger Department of Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology University of South Africa Abstract This article analyses Karl Barth’s 1919 Tambach lecture on “The Christian in society” in the context of post World War I Europe. After describing Barth’s early life and his move away from liberal theology, the five sections of the Tambach lecture are analysed. Barth’s early dialectical theology focussed on: Neither secularising Christ nor clericalising society; Entering God’s movement in society; Saying Yes to the world as creation (regnum naturae) ; Saying No to evil in society (regnum gratiae) ; respecting God’s reign as beyond our attempts (regnum gloriae) . 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 The approach of this paper This article should be read together with the one following it, since the two papers were conceived and born together. Rev B B Senokoane and I made a joint presentation to the conference on “Reading Karl Barth in South Africa today,” which was held in Pretoria on 10-11 August 2006. In the subsequent reworking of the material for publication, it became two articles. This article analyses the 1919 Tambach lecture of Karl Barth in its post World War I German context, to get a sense of the young Barth’s theological method and commitment. The second article uses Barth’s approach, as exhibited in that lecture, to theologise in South Africa, stepping into his shoes and “doing a Tambach” today. The first move is an exercise in historical interpretation and the second in contemporary imagination. -

ENCOUNTER IN JAPAN EMIL BRUNNER-AN INTERPRETATION l. JOHN HESSELINK On July 2, 1955, Dr. Emil Brunner, his wife and Miss Iris Bruns 1 sailed from Yokohama, Japan. As the ship, bound for Europe, slipped out of the harbor, an unusual but moving scene took place. Instead of the usual parting shouts and farewells the crowd of Japanese and American friends gathered at the dock began to sing a hymn2 - the majestic strains of "A Mighty Fortress is Our God," the Brunners' favorite hymn. Those who had gathered there, representing countless thousands whose lives had been touched by the Brunners, were struck with a sense of loss and regret. This was truly "farewell" to this admirable couple who twice since the war had given a part of their lives for the spread of the gospel in Japan. The first visit had been brief- from October to December in 1949. The second was of longer duration, from October of 1953 to July 1955, cut short only by Mrs. Brunner's illness. During these visits they had so endeared themselves to both the Japanese Church and the foreign missionary community that there was almost the feeling that no one could fill the vacancy. And yet there was gratitude that they were able to return to Zurich, for these past two years had been hard and exacting in many ways. Only those intimately associated with the Brunners during their stay here in Japan can appreciate what was involved in their coming. Despite the fact that Japan is remarkably advanced in literary and industrial fields, possessing a rich culture and a standard of living far superior to most Asian countries, the missionary "mortality rate" is higher here than any where else in the world. -

DOI: https://doi.org/10.15463/ie1418.10519 Politics and Neutrality (Switzerland) By Carlo Moos Neutrality is a fundamental problem in modern Swiss history and played a pivotal role in both world wars. During the Second World War the danger came from the outside, while during the First World War Switzerland was also threatened from within. From 1914 to 1918 a rift endangered Switzerland politically, as the western part of the country was concerned about the future of France, while the eastern part had strong ties to Germany. Several crises of neutrality made the situation during the war more difficult, amongst them an affair of two colonels from the General Staff and a peace mission by a federal councillor and a social- democrat member of parliament. The division within the country continued after the war, especially in relation to the creation of the League of Nations.
