Anthropology of Race 1 Knowing Race John Hartigan What do we know about race today? Is it surprising that, after a hun- dred years of debate and inquiry by anthropologists, not only does the answer remain uncertain but also the very question is so fraught? In part, this reflects the deep investments modern societies have made in the notion of race. We can hardly know it objectively when it constitutes a pervasive aspect of our identities and social landscapes, determining advantage and disadvantage in a thoroughgoing manner. Yet, know it we do. Perhaps mis- takenly, haphazardly, or too informally, but knowledge claims about race permeate everyday life in the United States. As well, what we understand or assume about race changes as our practices of knowledge production also change. Until recently, a consensus was held among social scientists—predi- cated, in part, upon findings by geneticists in the 1970s about the struc- ture of human genetic variability—that “race is socially constructed.” In the early 2000s, following the successful sequencing of the human genome, counter-claims challenging the social construction consensus were formu- lated by geneticists who sought to support the role of genes in explaining race.1 This volume arises out of the fracturing of that consensus and the attendant recognition that asserting a constructionist stance is no longer a tenable or sufficient response to the surge of knowledge claims about race. HANAMI The Domestic/Public Dichotomy Nearly twenty years ago, in a work that has become a landmark in women's studies by female anthropologists. Michelle Rosaldo proposed a dichotomy between a "domestic" orientation in women and a "public" orientation in men as a theoretical framework to anal- yze the universal position of women. In the theoretical overview of the book Woman. Culture, and Society (Rosaldo & Lamphere 1 974), Rosaldo accounted for the difference between the sexes in terms of this dichotomy by stating that there is a world-wide asymmetry of gender-identified activities: women's activities tended to be undervalued compared to those of their sexual counterpart and men were recognized as having culturally legitimated authority over women. By her definition, "domestic" meant "those minimal institutions and modes of activity that are organized immediately around one or more mothers and their children," and the "public" referred to "activities, institutions, and forms of association that link, rank, organize, or subsume particular mother-chi]d groups" (Rosaldo 1974: 23). She hypothesized that women are primarily involved in "domestic" relations and activities, while men are free to form broader associations in the public domain. Women are bound to the "enduring, time- consuming and emotionally-compelling" commitment as exemplified in a mother's relation with her infant child, whereas men can keep their distance from the "messiness" of domestic life, and engage themselves in the hierarchical, political world. -

Reviews “plain brutes” (p. 50) the leaders of Africa. After independence they were “absolutely awful but their successors have been even worse” (p. 7). Nkrumah, with his “crazed dream” of socialism and unity for Africa, is their bête noire, slammed for “his vanity, ideological duplicity and disingenuousness” (p. 42). Jerry Rawlings does not fare much better: he was “a typical African despot,” the “great whale” (p. 163), though apart from bumping-off his predecessors, the authors are unable to nail him for a truly convincing vice. Busia was “bumbling” (p. 43). Acheampong was “an incompetent tyrant” (p. 10) and “Ghana’s chief kleptocrat” (p. 11). The disapprobation sweeps out to the other African leaders: Sekou Touré was “the destructive President of Guinea” (p. 66) and Eyadema of Togo “one of the worst blights ever to be cast on Africa” (p. 58). The jacket blurb presumably has these excoriations in mind in commending the book as “courageous.” One way or another, it has all been said before, and so many of the culprits are on the litigiously safe side of the grave. The thought-provoking contrast, however, is not with the Thompsons’ approbation of the Thai leaders, but with their panegyrics for the bourgeois intellectuals with whom they ally themselves: “that great economist Partha Dasgupta” (p. 158); “the great development economist Robert West” (p. 14); “the learned Carl Rosberg” (p. 44); and a stream of others, many of whom rate the over-exercised label “brilliant.” At Independence, African leaders had a passionate respect for academics, and insisted on the qualifications they had acquired, one way or another: Doctor Nkrumah, Doctor Obote, Doctor Banda. -

AMERICAN ANTHROPOLOGIST Integrative Anthropology and the Human Niche: Toward a Contemporary Approach to Human Evolution Agustın´ Fuentes ABSTRACT A niche is the structural, temporal, and social context in which a species exists. Over the last two million years, the human lineage underwent clear morphological changes alongside less easily measurable, but significant, behavioral and cognitive shifts as it forged, and was shaped by, new niches. During this time period, core human patterns emerged, including the following: hypercooperation; lengthy childhood and complex parenting; intricate and diverse foraging and hunting patterns; novel and dynamic material and symbolic cultures; and complex communication and information sharing, eventually resulting in language. Approaches to human evolution grounded in paleoanthropology and archaeology offer fundamental insights into our past, and traditional evolutionary the- ory offers a strong grounding for explaining them. However, given the centrality of distinctive physiological, social, semiotic, and cognitive processes in human evolutionary histories, a broader anthropological approach can facilitate additional understanding of the human story. An integrative anthropology, reaching across subfields and foci, com- bined with contemporary evolutionary theory is an approach that can enhance our abilities to model and understand human evolution. Louise Lamphere: I’m Louise Lamphere. I’m a retired Distinguished Professor of Anthropology at the University of New Mexico. And I currently live in Albuquerque, New Mexico, split my time between that and New York City. Goldstein: And you had a role at Brown? Lamphere: Oh yes. And I was at Brown. I started teaching there in 1968. Left because I didn’t get tenure in 1975. And returned after my lawsuit in ‘79. Stayed until 1985. I had a year’s leave then [1985-86] but didn’t resign until ‘86. Goldstein: Okay, so now that we’ve done the synopsis, we’re going to take the slow story [laughs]. Lamphere: Okay [laughs]. Goldstein: So I’m wondering if you can start by just talking a little bit about the kind of environment you grew up in. Was there any activism in your home when you were a kid? Lamphere: Well, I come from a staunch Republican family in the state of Colorado. I grew up in Denver, Colorado. My mother’s family—her, both of her parents were German-American in sort of heritage. And my grandmother was born in Golden in 1885; she was part of the German community there, the same community that Coors came from. And my grandfather was born in Leavenworth, Kansas, but came to Colorado when he was five. -

LOWIE University of California HE Editor of the AMERICAN ANTHROPOLOGIST has asked me to offer "some T discussion and analysis of the intellectual ferment, the various ideas and interests, and the important factual discoveries in their relationship to these ideas, that were current during the period of your early years as an anthropolo gist." In responding I shall have to go far afield. The task suggested implies nevertheless two noteworthy restrictions. Factual discoveries are irrelevant (except as they influenced ideas), as is administrative promotion of scientific interests. Accordingly, though sharing Sapir's judgment that as a field worker J. O. Dorsey was "ahead of his age," I must ignore him for present purposes. Again, there will be only brief references to Frederic Ward Putnam (1839-1915) and to Frederic Webb Hodge (1864-1956); as to Powell and McGee, only their thinking demands extended notice. It is well to recall that in 1904, when I began graduate work, only Columbia, Harvard, and California had full-fledged academic departments of anthropol ogy, but the Field Museum, a descendant of the Chicago World's Fair of 1893, had been fostering research, as had the Bureau of American Ethnology and the United States National Museum. -
