30 Dialects of Spanish and Portuguese JOHN M. LIPSKI 30.1 Basic Facts 30.1.1 Historical Development Spanish and Portuguese are closely related Ibero‐Romance languages whose origins can be traced to the expansion of the Latin‐speaking Roman Empire to the Iberian Peninsula; the divergence of Spanish and Portuguese began around the ninth century. Starting around 1500, both languages entered a period of global colonial expansion, giving rise to new vari- eties in the Americas and elsewhere. Sources for the development of Spanish and Portuguese include Lloyd (1987), Penny (2000, 2002), and Pharies (2007). Specific to Portuguese are fea- tures such as the retention of the seven‐vowel system of Vulgar Latin, elision of intervocalic /l/ and /n/ and the creation of nasal vowels and diphthongs, the creation of a “personal” infinitive (inflected for person and number), and retention of future subjunctive and pluper- fect indicative tenses. Spanish, essentially evolved from early Castilian and other western Ibero‐Romance dialects, is characterized by loss of Latin word‐initial /f‐/, the diphthongiza- tion of Latin tonic /ɛ/ and /ɔ/, palatalization of initial C + L clusters to /ʎ/, a complex series of changes to the sibilant consonants including devoicing and the shift of /ʃ/ to /x/, and many innovations in the pronominal system. 30.1.2 The Spanish Language Worldwide Reference grammars of Spanish include Bosque (1999a), Butt and Benjamin (2011), and Real Academia Española (2009–2011). The number of native or near‐native Spanish speakers in the world is estimated to be around 500 million. In Europe, Spanish is the official language of Spain, a quasi‐official language of Andorra and the main vernacular language of Gibraltar; it is also spoken in adjacent parts of Morocco and in Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony. -

49 PALATALIZATION IN BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE AND ITS EFFECTS ON THE PHONOLOGICAL LEARNING OF ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE A PALATALIZAÇÃO DO PORTUGUÊS BRASILEIRO E SEUS EFEITOS NA APRENDIZAGEM DA FONOLOGIA DO INGLÊS LÍNGUA ESTRANGEIRA Clerton Barboza1 Abstract: Th is paper investigates the eff ects of Brazilian Portuguese (BP) alveolar stop palatalization /t, d/ → [tʃ, dʒ] on the phonological learning of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). It aims to answer the following research question: What is the role of BP palatalization on EFL phonological learning? Grounded on a usage-based view of language (BYBEE, 2010), it is hypothesized that EFL learners follow diff erent phonological learning patterns depending on their specifi c BP dialect. Th e data analysis confi rms this hypothesis, as palatalizing BP informants tend to produce higher levels of palatalization in the target language. Resumo: O estudo objetiva investigar efeitos da palatalização das oclusivas alveolares /t, d/ → [tʃ, dʒ] do Português Brasileiro (PB) na aprendizagem da fonologia do Inglês Língua Estrangeira (ILE). Tem, por pergunta problema, “Qual o papel da palatalização do PB no aprendizado da fonologia do ILE?” Numa visão de língua baseada no uso (BYBEE, 2010), hipotetiza-se que aprendizes de ILE seguem diferentes padrões de aprendizagem a depender do seu falar do PB. A análise dos dados confi rma a hipótese, uma vez que aprendizes palatalizadores no PB tendem a maiores níveis de palatalização no ILE. Leo Wetzels Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam Abstract In this paper, we develop an analysis of primary word stress in Brazilian Portuguese (BP). We evaluate the typological and language-specific arguments that are presented in the literature against the relevance of syllable weight in Portuguese, and show that none of them appears to be valid when confronted with cross-linguistic evidence or the facts of BP phonology. We then go on to show that stress in BP represents a mixed system, in which verbs receive stress as a function of the morphological categories of tense (past, present, future), whereas stress in non-verbs is prosody-based and sensitive to the distinction between heavy and light syllables. -

O /S/ FINAL DO FALAR TRIRRIENSE – UM ESTUDO SOBRE AS VARIANTES LINGUÍSTICAS NO CONTINUUM LINGUÍSTICO RJ-BH Daniela Samira da Cruz Barros (UFRRJ) [email protected] Renata Rita Rangel (UFRRJ) [email protected] Pilar Silveira Mattos (UFJF) [email protected] Introdução O presente trabalho se configura como um recorte do macroprojeto “Carioca ou mineiro: um estudo sobre o falar trirriense” que tem como principal objetivo tecer, através de um estudo fonético-fonológico, características da fala da cidade de Três Rios/RJ. Como foco principal do projeto, temos a construção de um estudo sistemático do /s/ em coda produzido pelos cidadãos trirrienses, bem como sua relação com o estereótipo “carioca” ou “mineiro” destinado ao trirriense. Para tanto, é imperioso ressaltar o fator geográfico: a região está situada no meio do continuum RJ-BH, delimitando assim, a situação fronteiriça de Três Rios em termos linguísticos, o que nos permite traçar análises que não eximam esse fator como determinante. A metodologia, componente ímpar neste trabalho, recai em um extenso corpus que abriga entrevistas de informantes das cinco localidades investigadas do continuum RJ-BH: Rio de Janeiro, Petrópolis, Três Rios, Juiz de Fora e Belo Horizonte. Os entrevistados são de ambos os sexos e foram divididos em faixas etárias – de 15 a 25 anos; de 26 a 49 anos; e de 50 anos ou mais. Como escopo teórico da pesquisa, as metas realizadas estão alicerçadas nos pressupostos teóricos da Sociolinguística Variacionista, mais precisamente nos pressupostos labovianos. Sendo assim, tendo em vista a completude desse estudo, esse recorte objetiva, após considerar primeiramente a definição da variável linguística (/s/ em coda silábica), expor a fase metodológica de análise de dados por qual perpassou este estudo. -

Thadeu Gasparetto1,1Carlos Fernández-Jardón2,2Angel Barajas3 BRAND TEAMS AND DISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH IN BRAZILIAN STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS4 The paper contributes to explain an unexplored competition that is the Brazilian State Championships. How it is organized and the financial features of three championships are described. The aim of the paper is to discover if the presence of "Brand-teams" in a competition increases the income of all participating teams and if the type of championship conditions the effect of Brand Team on revenues of all teams. As the present study aims to be a pioneer in economic research on Brazilian State Championships, it has an exploratory character. The study uses an equations system to estimate for testing the hypothesis. The estimation method is 3SLS to delete the possible endogeneity of the variables. There have been studied 400 matches played by 48 teams from Mineiro, Paulista and Carioca Championships in season 2013. The structure of the Brazilian State Championship, with the participation of brand-teams, creates an income redistribution effect. The features of the visiting team imply an increase in attendance. This effect is moderated by the type of Championship. The Championship structure generates an additional increase of the revenue.
